Ultraviolence - Post-Release Discussion Thread + Poll

I need to get it off my head:

I really think there is a major problem with this record;

Both the era and the music itself.

 

It's obviously my own opinion but I find it rushed not so thoughtful.

I wanna begin with the good stuff:

We really got some masterpieces in there such as:

West Coast

Shades of Cool

Sad Girl

Pretty When You Cry

 

But other songs such as:

Money Power Glory

Fucked My Way Up to the Top

Florida Kilos

Guns and Roses

Black Beauty

Ultraviolence

 

Are not quite good or special.

The lyrics are quite repetitive, the melodies aren't 'listener-friendly' (example: Guns and Roses) and the music itself feels very rushed as I said before.

 

One track that is quite different from others is 'Black Beauty' cause the demo was indeed a beautiful take that was more focused on Lana's voice - it felt so raw and true; The final kinda ruins the entire atmosphere with the major 'upgrade'.

 

I didn't talk about Old Money cause this one isn't my personal favorite-

The verses are so beautiful and aching but then once again - UV Typical - the chorus is written so lazy and it fails to pick up from where the verses started.

 

At the end of the day, it's nice (sometimes) to go back to this record and getting filled up with memories from 2014 - but I personally think this isn't Lana's greatest album (HM and NFR! topped it for sure).

I came down for dinner with my Mum the other day and she had this album playing in the background on shuffle and man, it really exemplified for me what a great set of songs this album really is. Like there's just so many strong, big, stand-out moments - West Coast, Shades of Cool, Brooklyn Baby, Fucked My Way, Ultraviolence, Sad Girl, Pretty When You Cry... even songs that I sorta dismissed before, like Money Power Glory and Black Beauty, I still absolutely LOVE. Love love love Florida Kilos too, I can see why it was demoted to bonus track since it's a v different vibe but I think it would've fit pretty well with Brooklyn Baby before it and FMWUTTT after it. I love this album soooo much!!!

Some thoughts:

Cruel World:THE PRODUCTION. That bassline. You can tell the song was written over the instrumentals, rather than the usual other way and its glorious. The lyrics are heartbreakingly beautiful per usual. Repetitive, yes. Of course. But it is done in a way that works amazingly well. I get the feeling she’s throwing her man’s words back at him like they’re missiles.The way she changes how she sings the same lyrics from a genuine heartbroken tone to a baby voiced sarcastic way, she’s mocking him and I love it. Also, as a fan of Lana’s coked up white girl vocals THIS SONG DELIVERS THEM. An Accomplishment.

Ultraviolence: Aptly the title track, Ultraviolence is atmospheric perfection. Like The Crystals “He Hit Me And It Felt Like A Kiss” the productions is a happy beautiful that both contrasts and blends with the disturbing yet heartfelt lyrics. The bridge, like most Lana songs, is my favorite part transcending an already great song. I like the cohesiveness of the record with “lay me down tonight, in my linen and pearls” playing in the background near the end.

Before Del Rey — who was a fan of Pulp Art Book — met Krug in 2014, she thought he was dead. “All these years and we’ve never figured that one out,” he says today. The two soon started shooting images for her third full-length, Ultraviolence, and ended up with over a thousand photos; they spotted the cover almost immediately, which happened to be the first shot Krug had taken. “It was understated, it was haunting,” he says. “I wanted it to feel like the end of a horror film, like the last thing you see before the credits.”
