Tove Styrke became a star in her native Sweden as just a teenager, finishing third on Swedish Idol in 2009 and subsequently launching a career in the country’s finest export: big, luminous electro-pop. But like most people entering their twenties, her tastes changed. Last fall, 22-year-old Styrke — not to be confused with Tove Lo, of sex-clubs-and-Twinkies fame — dropped the Borderline EP, six clever coming-of-age tracks about womanhood and finding your voice that revealed more diverse influences on the reggae-tinged title track and the spunky “Even If I’m Loud It Doesn’t Mean I’m Talking to You.”

Okay my artist threads are either huge successes, dismal flops, a year ahead of their time, or I'm the only one excited about them. I'm obviously hoping for the first but expecting the last here. I heard Tove's new track "Ego" like two weeks ago and was mildly impressed, but as soon as I downloaded her latest EP Borderline I became absolutely obsessed--even her cheesy Europop 2011 debut is shockingly great. Think the same topical and sonic realm as MØ but more distinct.

Ideal entry point:

The past:

My favorite song:

Not gonna @ you hoes!

The album's out in 5 weeks though and there's still no official preorder anywhere?

I was gonna make it yesterday to avoid this mess post-Ego vid bc I knew one of you bitches would have the jump on me, o well

I'm just excited to see a cover and tracklist, where did you find that?! I expected delays as per with new artists wanting to jump right into an album

I found the album release date last Friday, and tried to find more info yesterday - Deezer and Sainsbury's already have the album listed but Amazon deleted it from their site.

I listened to "Ego" a few weeks and it did nothing for me. "Borderline" is alright but still I'm not freaking out over it yet either. I feel like some of my faves have required me giving them some time and weren't necessarily so immediate so I'm totally up for giving her a chance if someone wants to send me her EP or something!

Kind of unfortunate to be a Swedish singer named Tove and have a song with the word "high" in it right now...

I bet not being insufferable helps

But let's not! :runs:

"Hi-jack the idea of a girl that obeys HAHAHA oh my laugh it in the face"

feminist icon

(I want to use the bop emoji but I'm on my phone and im not sure what it's called... :bops: ?)

Borderline and Even If I'm Loud are also highkey feminist anthems :hair: And her album's named after fuckin Beatrix Kiddo from Kill Bill!

I do love how I logged into three different mentions to resuscitate flop threads but the minute I post something I'm into y'all are crickets! I guess I WILL have to @ hoes

Finally  :oprah:

I watched Swedish Idol 2005-2010 and she was one of my absolute favorites from those years. I remember thinking that this girl will go very far. She wasn't the best singer, but definitly the one who was most star material out of all contestants during the seasons I watched. This performance is a good example of that:

She's also the only public person I've ever been in love with  :toofunny:

I really like what I've heard from her new stuff so far. Apparently she had some difficult years after Idol, but it seems she's now back in full strength  I'll be following this with interest.
