A painting of two Tahitian girls by the French artist Paul Gauguin has been sold for $300m (£197m), making it the most expensive work of art ever sold.

Nafea Faa Ipoipo, or When Will You Marry?, was painted in 1892 and had been owned by a Swiss collector.

Unconfirmed reports suggest it was sold to a museum in Qatar.

The small oil-rich state paid the previous highest price for a painting, a work by Paul Cezanne which sold for a reported £158m.

Before its sale, the Gauguin artwork had been owned by Rudolf Staechelin, a collector from Basel.

For decades it had been on loan to the Kunstmuseum Basel but Mr Staechelin decided to sell the painting after a disagreement with the museum, US media report.

I'd love it if you went into detail about this :)

I haven't read too extensively about this myself even :P, i'm looking for a book on him because I want to know more. I saw some of his paintings in December and they had the history about him travelling there in search of a primitive paradise to find inspiration but he was sort of disillusioned by what he saw there and I just love this exotic imagery so much Paul_Gauguin_-_Te_aa_no_areois_-_Google_

I'm not gonna lie and say this painting speaks to me. To be flat out honest, I really struggle to appreciate paintings. I understand that artists usually have a message and a reason for how/what they paint - I even have a couple of art books myself - but this form of art is something that I've never really been able to appreciate, also with sculpture art too.

Plus, it really baffles me that people are willing to spend such a huge amount of money on a piece of art when there are lesser known artists who have an equal amount of passion and intelligence behind what they paint.
