Tomorrow Never Came (ft. Sean Ono Lennon)

ok after relistening to the snippet over and over finally got the right lyrics

"Why?

Don't ask me why, why, why, why, why, why

Lay lady lay

And inside of paradise

In the tropic of cancer

'Cause if I had my way

You would always stay

and I"

Btw it's "tropic of cancer" after the book by Henry Miller :)

I think it might be 'on/and This Side of Paradise' after the book by F Scott Fitzgerald, which would keep with the theme of literary references with Tropic of Cancer coming after it?

It does sound a bit like a 'd' sound but I wonder if that's maybe just Lana's turn of phrase like she's saying 'dis side of paradise' more than pronouncing the 'th' sound. I'm sure she's done that before

'So I try to say goodbye my friend // I'd like to leave you with something warm // But never have I been a blue calm sea // I have always been a storm'

Such a fucking tearjerker. I love how evocative it is- it reads like a sepia tinted film. Look after the person you love.

I visualized Tittenhurst Park when she mentioned a country house & the chorus brought this photo session of John & Yoko to mind:

This is the second time Lana has mentioned Lay Lady Lay- the first being Religion. It's so interesting how many references may be/are in this song:

"Tiny Dancer" - Elton John
"Lay Lady Lay" - Bob Dylan

"Ask Me Why" - The Beatles

Even the title could be a love letter to "Tomorrow Never Comes" by Elvis, "Tomorrow Never Knows" by The Beatles, or "Tomorrow May Never Come" by Yoko.

it was the song that affected me most on first listen like as soon as lana sang 'but tomorrow never came' the first time I burst into tears and cried the whole rest of the song and it's my fucking favourite of life and i am going to force my boyfriend to adore it so when we get married 1 day it can be our first dance and i will die and be buried in my wedding dress but then some1 will play it at my funeral and i will Rise

:lange:

life rocked me, ultrasoftly
