So far I do think CoCC sound quite unique too. It kind of sounds like HM (the album as a whole) but that album is quite dark and dreamy while this one has that dreaminess to it, but it is sweeter/hopeful/nostalgic in tone. So I do think it is its own sound as of now.

When I say gothic I don’t mean like Marilyn Manson or Slipknot mall goth. I’m thinking more like a kind of dark Americana meets Baroque/southern gothic sound. Like Lana compared herself in one NFR interview to a female Johnny Cash, so that’s kind of the sound I’m thinking of for this album.

Y’all we don’t realize it but we really are in the midst of her best album yet (tho the era itself is a bit underwhelming)

I wrote a super long post, but it was basically this so I'll just say thank you for your concise thoughts!

A lot of the beauty of NFR, and why it was such a critical masterpiece is because of this. NFR is just as much an album about Lana just living her life with her friends and relationships as it is an album about dissolving American mythology. Lana's holding In her hand out on a boat, while California is burning in the background, the sky is painted, Norman Rockwell's name is Invoked, an American classic artist. The themes of climate Change, the Me Too movement, Toxic Masculinity and relationships, Political upheaval with Trump, Kanye, conservatism run afoul, etc. Lana's writing and music feels and sounds quite 'meta' at times to our culture and political climate, even though its clearly not her intention. (She often says something along the lines of 'I have a pulse of what's going on in the world' and she's right, but not exactly in the way we wish she was -e.g. she's politically fully aware and educated on things, 'woke' so to say etc). Learning that certain lines from the Greatest were essentially just throw always she thought sounded cool might dampen this effect if you've put her up on a pedestal as 'The Next Best American Songwriter, Period" but not if you see her for what she is, and accept that death of the author is a totally valid mental exercise in the 21st century. It's as beautiful and as in-depth or as shallow and asinine as you want it to be.

Ironically, this was the crux of Ann Powers NPR review to me, what she meant when she was saying that Lana lives in the 'messy subconscious' of America. (Though I think its fine Lana clapped back to an extent, some parts of it read as a bit derisive of her artistry even as it was complementary)

Regardless of how COTCC is reviewed, I personally feel like there's that same potential for analysis and relationship making between what we know of its themes, and I've thought so since the second we heard the title - its so incredibly aesthetic invoking. "Cottage-core". Privilege. Wealth. Normality. Complacency. Tradition. But also, Darkness, Conspiracy, Change, Unsettling, Foreboding... And especially there is a subtext of whiteness that seems impossible to ignore for me personally. If anything, its amplified by Lana's out of touch comments just as much as it is with her blonde hair in the video, the way she's speaking of the Midwest inspirations and alluding to folk-aspirations etc.

I personally will be happy just for serious reviews and analyses that try to suss out all of these implications and read into them for their potential, and I hope we get some of those. I'm seeing NFR-Violet and the COTCC-Behind the Gates as both like 2 part projects in terms of the whole 'Lana Del Rey' mythos personally, so I'll probably write a long blurb about all of this at some point, I just think its really fascinating.

When all is said and done Chemtrails will remain as her best album to date, surpassing Honeymoon I fear.

White Dress is coming to end this fandom and leave no trace but some follicles of our burnt wigs. We deserve it.

the way get free ends with ocean waves and she’s in the ocean on nfr’s cover.... that woman’s mind omg i never noticed the link between the two... plus her singing out of the black into the blue and ending nfr (the song) with you make me blue truly wow  i just now that white dress will either be a continuation of hope and or bring another connection and thus truly connecting nfr and cocc like the sister albums they are WE’RE NOT READY LADIES

I really think we are. I couldn’t fully justify it, but this album has felt special to me from the very beginning. In spite of the messiness I just love the global vibe of the era. Her being blonde, writing during quarantine, having grown from her baddie thing, having grown out of LFL through NFR to give us a more thought out, more cohesive album. I feel like she’s being honest about what she feels now, and yes, it comes at the price of QFTC controversy, but it also makes everything much more moving. And about QTFC, while we all agree her viewpoint lacks knowledge and humility, it also could be really worse than it is, and at least we can’t be let to think she supports Trump and stuff - things that could have been possible before LFL when she simply did not address those topics. She’s not selling the record as something extraordinary as she did for Ultraviolence, she’s not showing multiple snippets of it, and she said the poetry had come first, yet I think it’s going to be a brilliant body of work. Just like her best songs are those she doesn’t seem to notice or remember, and the ones she likes most aren’t at the same level. The fact that she put Yosemite on it gives me the impression of a full-circle moment. It’s like she’s at peace with things. I’m just sad about Dealer but even this I’m much more okay with than when LFL songs were scrapped.
