Sorry, I was going off of her ASCAP registration. The main point of my post was just about how annoying Titanic Sinclair is.

Melanie is signed to a major label and had the Voice for a large-scale introduction. Nice try tho

The concept comes from the idea that the "Badlands" represent her mind (playing into the fact that she's bipolar and struggled with it throughout her teenage years). The concept is less apparent on the deluxe because Tracks like Hurricane, Strange Love, & I Walk the line deviate from it, but its essentially her navigating though the different mental struggles she's faced by conceptualizing them into songs. The album itself bounces through highs (Roman Holiday) and the lows (colors) much like something someone with mental illness (or really anyone just to a less drastic degree) would experience. The best example of this would be Control where the lines bounce from symptoms of mania ("I paced around for hours on empty, I jumped at the slightest of sounds") and depression ("I couldn't stand the person inside me, I turned all the mirrors around). While I'm obviously overanalyzing it, I think its a pretty solid concept album given that its the debut from a 20 year old and she wrote it with a relatively small amount of people (the tracks were done with a lot of different producers yet have common lyrical themes leading me to believe she actually did write a lot of it). I think people are trashing the album because they don't like her as a person (which I can see why) but I don't think the album is bad by any means.

Hopefully her next album's concept is stronger, I don't think it's possible to understand Badlands' concept without watching the trailer or some interviews. It's in her mind but not really on the album itself.

I.........cannot stand her fanbase. One of them literally said on twitter "Ugh first UO jokes about mental illness and now they send out Halsey's album early. This is the last straw".........like........this is the last straw for you?..........not the countless times they made clothing disrespecting marginalized sexualities/genders/religions, referencing mass murders, and making stuff using nazi imagery?..........it was sending out an album a few weeks early? That was the final straw for you?

I love this transformation from submissive, needy and masochistic cry baby to revengeful and bloodlust Amazonian that grabs destiny in her own hands and clutches god by the balls. Sooo refreshing in contrast to her usual imagery. I am glad this is not overly produced, ultrapolished, fancy-schmancy grandiose video, because she already had ones, and also that it isn't flippant, sloppy and hermetic jerking off like Ultraviolence (ok, I don't hate that one, I just state that this overshadows Ultra, although it is as much as simple). It is something brand new, crazy hybrid between Tarantino action and Dogme 95/home video/Steve McQueen seventies/Larry Clark/documentary/voyeuristic  shaky camera, and you can feel that this kind of filming is deliberate. And it is masterfully delivered, because your site is really narrowed in suspense and you feel the excitement and vehemence of the action. Even slow parts are thrilling. Speed and poetry in one. And there is an excellent use of color (azure blue of vast ocean and bare, luminant crinoline of the sky), and frame from the balcony seems cosmically wide –that is the greatness of the vid also: the contrast between tight, claustrophobic tubes of villa halls with her rush like mercury through them and magnificent freedom of the big blue nature principles.

Although Shades of Cool have very strong visual metaphores, such as Lana in 3D illusion, stabbed by a sword, or gun pointing at her, bullets flying, flowers softly exploding, and magical amalgam of gem-like colors, like ruby, royal blue and mystic violet, this is much more cohesive and that Scarface shooting and explosion in the sky is like her initiation into whole new dimension of existence, personal (spiritual) and artistic. Enough experimental and intimate ("indie" formally, so to say) yet enough cohesive, articulate and charged, or should I say, blessed, with (almost) unexpected, brilliantly depicted culmination and message hidden in it. That climax is like her awakening from the nightmare into pure white bliss. Thousand orgasms from me.

And yes, she is so cute, funny, vulnerable and human in that scene of her gown being stuck, and the fact that we see her in different emotional states and in physical movement (running, stumbling) is a breezy shift from her gloomy, elusive, mysterious and impenetrable poutiness of a diva. I adore that expression of healthy rage and determination on her face. So complex, soulful and relatable. She creates a powerful space for catharsis.

I can't believe I'm all over the place defending this not completely visually spectacular video, but she ignores the helicopter for the most part because she's used to it. She's hiding in her room and trying to ignore it (which is how she generally handles press) then she snapped for whatever reason, tired of seeing herself be misinterpreted and slandered and decided that it was time to shoot the shit talkers down.

I think on hits daily double they said that she has been doing well w/ pre-orders, I'm not sure exactly what doing well with pre-orders would equate to in first-week sales, but I'm going to guess that 30-45k (maybe 50k) is probable. I think she'll do better than whatever Ryn did, and that she'll sell more than whatever Melanie Martinez is going to sell.

As to her attitude towards people about her music, I think her (along w/ Ryn) need to realize that once you release your music, you need to just let the music speak for itself. I'm not saying she can't clarify something discussed about one of her songs, but she needs to be more selective in what she addresses and specifically, how she addresses it. Coming off bitchy, rude, and ungrateful does not do her any good for her image. With an artist like her, whose fan base in entirely made up of people who frequent the internet, she may need to realize that anything she does do on the internet, her fans will be aware of it. If she continues with a hot & cold attitude, that could turn away potential future fans and  turn off current fans.

she needs to grow the fuck up. she doesn't get to decide how a person interprets a song. not everyone who listens to her music cares about what its original meaning to her is. most people want to listen to music so they can apply it to their own lives and have it mean something to them. she should stop shoving her own personal sentiments down other people's throats and accept that once you put a song out there it isn't just yours anymore.  it becomes something to anyone who listens to it and has it resonate with them. if she has no desire to let people interpret her art, why exactly does she want to make it? what childish fucking bullshit all this is. if she cares that much she may as well just have a narration/preface at the beginning of the each song, removing all excitement, mystery and the freedom of interpretation from it.

Who is a great artist/bad artist/whatever is just a petty matter of opinion. I'm talking about substantial criticisms here. The lyrical handiwork, manufactured image, 'Tumblr' aesthetic, dark alt-pop, the yearning to appeal to 'teens who listen to 'indie music' and shop at Urban Outfitters,' etc. They have some heavy parallels. The only downfall Halsey has against her is the similarities between the two songs I mentioned before.

There's no reason to get defensive towards artists that cut into the same niche 'part-indie, part-mainstream popularity, part-viral success' market as Lana Del Rey. People did the same thing when Lorde came on the market because she 'stole' Lana's trip-hop fusion on pop music and semi-dramatic persona, and now Halsey is the next victim.
Let's be honest: Lana's lips were not the only thing that caused her to be slammed in the public eye. Shaky live performances, the uncovering of her ill-fated first stab at a music career, the huge viral footprint she left behind before moving to Interscope with social media accounts, to name a few.

Once again, minus that New Ameicana similarity, Halsey is not in the wrong. Plagiarizing work is not the same as re-purposing or sampling work. If the sample was cleared by the original artist and was credited appropriately, plagiarism is no longer on the board. If this weren't the case, artists like Azealia Banks wouldn't have a professional career right now (well, whatever is left of it, I suppose).

Los Angeles based singer/songwriter Zella Day blends modern pop with a touch of Western Bohemian flair.
A native of Arizona, she was raised in small town near Phoenix. Eventually relocating to L.A.
Zella first came to notice when her 2012 acoustic cover of The White Stripes' song "Seven Nation Army" began
racking up the hits on Youtube. Soon she adopted a lusher, pop-oriented sound, which led some critics to refer
to her as a happier sounding Lana Del Rey. (That's a weird comparison, but sure.) Her first single, "Sweet Ophelia"
arrived in April 2014 and in October of the same year she released her Self-Titled debut EP.
