  1. HM is her best major label album by a nose over UV.* HM & 24 are fucking masterpieces. GKIT, "Salvatore", & TBD are fantastic, and MTWBT & "Freak" have moments of sheer brilliance. I do not understand the underappreciation. I can only chalk it up to y'all being pace queens. Or being focused more on promotion or videos than the music itself.

*The songs on BTD had the potential to be, but the overproduction ruined it.

I really like 24 and Blackest Day, HBTB and MTWBT. But I just don't feel the same pull I do to songs like Cruel World, Shades of Cool, or Born to Die.

There was a review I remember about HM where the critic said that the album revolved around a more passive role that was less introspective and more of a commentator of the things around her, and I agreed with that. I do tend to like Lana best when she is either a. slow and introspective or b. uptempo, and I felt like both of those were missing from HM for the large part.

Objectively, yes, it is one of her most coherent bodies of work next to UV.

  2. When I came home for winter break in my senior year of college I showed my mom the Ride video.

Her exact words were "I like the song and the lyrics are good but why is such a beautiful girl with so many ugly men?"

I explained to her the daddy themes in Lana's music and she said, "Still, could she not have cast someone that looked like George Clooney?"  :um2:

My mom LOVES Lolita though (the AKA version), which is why I felt comfortable sharing Lana's music with her. I haven't since I showed her the Ride video though lmao.

  3. Yeah this sounds just like it would've been on an album with Angels Forever, Forever Angels, Starry Eyed, JFK, Hollywood, and IDWG.

    Also like I Can Fly.

Lyrics are simple but it was very jarring to have Lana sing to me - the "you kids" line and "you're young and in love". Liked that she changed it to "I" at the end.

  4. All I need is OTTR demo and BBM Baby and I think that I would legit be good with what has been unreleased. I was never super interested in Fine China and I don't know the others well enough to feel any sort of hype (half expecting them to all be like Betty Boop Boop).

  5. Ride, of course! I think that Video Games is a close second but doesn't come out on top for me because it focuses on someone else.

I am obviously aware that most of Lana's songs are about someone else, and therefore a song whose subject is "the lover" might be the top for some people, I think that that Ride was truly about herself and was an extremely introspective work. I think it examined how she navigated her years leading up to where she was at that point, and broke down her coping mechanisms and ways she dealt with problems.

Monologue of course included in my evaluation.

  6. Commercially yes but musically no. She's quite respected in the music industry now because of building her own career rather than having things written for her, and I believe that she will experiment more on the next album.

There's a likely probability in my mind that the next album will be more pop than the others.
