I sat down with a bunch of friends a few nights ago and we tried to backtrace how long we cpuld go back in time with our favourite album of the year. Not in a retrospective way - attaching albums we like to years they were released in - but from the POV of the respective years. Meaning "What was your fav album during that point in time?" My longest reach back is 2008 (I was 13 back then), although some years were veeeery strong. But let's still try to stick to 1 album/ year I thought it was kind of fun, so I wanted to share that "game" with you. Looking forward to see your recap! 2008 - Peter Fox: Stadtaffe German members might be able to relate Was a hot record on my mp3 player while I was watching trailer videos for Tekken 6. 2009 - Gossip: Music For Men that year I got my Ipod. And with the Ipod came Itunes and the possibility to dig through artists back catalogue without much effort. Gossip was the first band I stanned. Honrable mentions: Mando Diao: Give Me Fire, Florence + The Machine: Lungs, Lily Allen: It's Not Me, It's You 2010 - Amanda Jenssen: Happyland I watched the TV livestream of the Baden Bafen New Pop Festival with my parents back then. This shaped my music taste a lot. I remember that during that time, Amazon had some sort of promotion where they sold new digital albums on Release Day Fridays for 50%. I discovered a lot of my fav artists that way. 2012 - Marina & The Diamonds: Electra Heart Had discovered her with TFJ before via the "New Pop Festival" Livestream I watched with my parents on TV. Honrable mentions: Chelsea Wolfe: Pain Is Beauty 2014 - Lana Del Rey: Ultraviolence I was a big annoying Lana fanboy about that time already, but that album, the sound, the visuals, ... it was such a formative event for me in so many ways. I was past my first "str8 boi heartbreak", I had my dramatic teenage sexual awakening, I had my driving license and was driving around alone a lot with windows rolled down and I was finishing school and starting a voluntary social year where I met a lot of people that I actually got along with. Exciting times for an exciting album, a hot summer for a hot album. Honrable mentions: Mando Diao: AELITA 2015 - Chelsea Wolfe: Abyss I had discovered Chelsea via one of these Amazon promotions I talked about earlier. But Abyss really marked a time where I had a dark "phase", listening to a lot of experimental and heavy stuff. Abyss was also the soundtrack of me moving from home and pretending to wander the new city like Fiona Goode from AHS. Honrable mentions: Lana Del Rey: Honeymoon, Marina & The Diamonds: Froot, Jesper Munk: CLAIM, Marriages: Salome, Halsey: Badlands, Melanie Martinez: Crybaby, Kovacs: Shades Of Black, Marilyn Manson: The Pale Emperor 2016 - Garbage: Strange Little Birds I had only discovered Garbage a year before via Chelsea Wolfe's "Hypnos Hour" podcast. "The World Is Not Enough" had been a favourite of mine some years before, especially because of the music video (and an Anna Williams fan montage I watched during my Tekken-fanboy-era) and the Garbage discog (most of which I downloaded illegally back then) had been the soundtrack of me starting to go for runs (it was a painful experience after being a couch potato for my whole life and Garbage helped me pull through). A (wonderful) launch concert for SLB in Luxembourg was the first concert I went to on my own. Honrable mentions: TaxiWars: Fever 2017 - Sevdaliza: ISON Ever since I moved out of home, Sevda had been part of my life's soundtrack (One Armed Bandit & "Children of Silk" in particular). The release of her first LP coincidenced with my first major breakup, rebounder relationship (still slightly sorry for burningnthat guy) and mental breakdown. This was the soundtrack for a quite unpleasant love affair, my working night shifts, and me takint loooong walks in a forest with my dog during the firs "lockdown". Played alot of imaginary concerts in my head performing "Crying All The Time" back then. I think my first CD was Mika's Life in Cartoon Motion in 2007. He was big on German radio back then and I liked the singles, but I can't really remember listening to the album a lot. The first CD I bought with my own money was Lily Allen's It's not me, it's you in 2009 after seeing a BTS clip of the The Fear music video on MTV. That one I played a lot. The first digital album I bought on Itunes when I got an Ipod for my birthday was Music For Man by Gossip in either 2009 or 2010. I think they were the first band I ever really fanboyed and digital music made it possible to dive into their full back catalogue. My first vinyl was Chelsea Wolfe's Hypnos/ Flame double single in 2016, the first LP was a blue pressing of Born To Die that got released in 2017. I bought both as collector items, I did not even have a record player back then 🙃 The first vinyl I actually bought when I finally got a player was Agnes Obel's Aventine. The first - and only - music cassette I ever bought is Marina's venus-flytrap-green ADIAM.

I love how as soon as Lana changes one little word in the live performance of a song there are instantly ALL CAPS videos going like OMG LAMA DEL REY CHANGED THE WORDS FOR NFR! SUCH A SHAAAADE and it turns out this is because she sang "You're just my man" instead of "a man"

So - now that this has been out for a rhile, I have to say that I really like it, but similarly to LFL and COCC, it is sn album I almost never listen to in its entirety, only picking out tracks or skipping songs - which is a shame, since I love a full album experience. I mainly blame the Judah Smith interlude for it. It's something I don't feel like playing on a casual level, it's fartoo long to tolerate. Also, I feel like the tracklist feels a bit messy and clunky for everything after A&W. It just does not flow very well. And I'm still really dad Taco Truck is not a full song. Really love her vocsls and the guitar on it

I mean - the production is nice, the setlist is nice but ... her vocals were really lacking for big parts of the show (not that it matters, the crowd shouts so loud they won't hear her sing anyway). Don't know why y'all feeld the need to talk yourself into something else.

1. HM 2. UV The "untouchables" in my opinion. Timeless, beautiful, cinematic twin albums. Lana on the peek of her artistry. 3. NFR 4. BB Both are very solid and I find myself coming back to them a lot - NFR from a more easy-to-listen perspective, BB representing her more complex newer style. Ranking between those two switches quite often depending on my mood. 5. Paradise 6. BTD I love both to death, but they are so extremely linked to a certain time in my life that I can almost only listen to thrm from a nostalgic perspective. Also my taste in music has changed a lot since then. As with NFR & BB, they rank very closely to each other, generally I prefer Paradise but sometimes I'm really in the mood for BTD. 7. DYKTTATUOB 8. LFL Both are nice albums, although they are a bit of a mixed bag - some tracks I really love, some I almost always skip. Rarely listen to them as full albums. 9. COTCC It has grown a bit to me over time, but I still feel like this is far too bleak. It never really feels like a complete body of work.
