Lust For Life - Post-Release Discussion Thread + Poll

She also sings 'You take the whale' in HBTB, so you can't always trust what comes out of her mouth Anyway, I definitely hear "gunnin'" but 'crying while I'm cumming' is a better line. -
Interview with Lana's producer Rick Nowels for Genius
longtimeman replied to latothemoon's topic in New Interviews
This was a really interesting read Does anyone know when Rick stopped being just another producer, and essentially became her main collaborator? He was already working a lot with her for the first Ultraviolence sessions, so it was either then or before then. -

I'm guessing that quote's from Breitbart? (I won't visit that website for the same reason I won't sit on public toilet seats that are covered in waste). Their entire business model is making up news, and people who use words like 'liberal' as a slur deserve their lives. -

Hearing Stevie come in during Beautiful People, Beautiful Problems is like waking up just in time to watch a perfect sunrise -
I though it would be useful to include the lyrics to the Lou Reed song 'Heroin' here, as it doesn't only share a title/subject matter with Lana's song, there might also be some interesting parallels people might want to explore. Calm down, mate. You're making me anxious about having the same opinions as you.

I agree that's a good chance. I have another theory that the 'fuck' was an actual bit of swearing Lana did when she messed up something in the studio, and it sounded good so they added it in. -

I honestly don't know, but I tend to favour more surface level interpretations of her songs than esoteric ones, even when she's referencing the occult. -

Well, I was too slow to post before you deleted it, but the Crowley reference is pretty clearly putting him alongside the other 'false prophets' that people follow without thinking for themselves. -

Why would you want to remove the sticker? It's a part of the release, and in the future won't be considered complete if it's missing. -

Just like nobody made a big deal about the link on Honeymoon between consecutive songs 'The Blackest Day' and '24 (Hours)', I wonder whether people are going to pick up on following the Beatles referencing 'Tomorrow Never Came' with 'Heroin', which references the Velvet Underground [The dark side Beatles], refers to Manson, and Motley Crue, who covered the Beatles' 'Helter Skelter', which (among other songs) 'inspired' Manson. I mean, I can't even write it out without producing the worst run on sentence ever posted here This record's going to take a while to decipher fully ... -

I've listened about 4 times this afternoon, and the record is phenomenal. Favourites so far: 13 Beaches Cherry When the World Was At War Beautiful People Heroin Get Free -
My impression is that it's about a feeling of darkness that the narrator has from the place that she's in, while the people around her are getting off on the fact that they're in a place associated with Manson. Warning: disgusting imagery in spoiler. The song seems to be about some people escaping into heroin, and some escaping from it. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't sick of it" is also about the need for escape (similar to the scene in 'Afraid'), and the sickness that surrounds heroin use - the sickness of addiction; the sickness of withdrawal; the existential sickness of being in that physical place. I've only just heard the song in the past couple of hours so it's still sinking in, but it's one of her best works.

Chord progressions can't be copyrighted, because if they were, Bo Diddley would be the richest person in the universe. https://ask.audio/articles/5-common-beliefs-about-song-copyrights-some-true-some-false -

I haven't either. -
This is really interesting. I had heard live versions, but hadn't seen video, and the way she physically and demonstratively stops herself from singing that line really shows where her emotions are at. The most compelling thing about her lyrics is that there's no sense of hindsight in them - she sings through the events as though she's experiencing them right that moment for the first time - and one of the risks of that is dealing with something that she hasn't fully worked through yet. I think in a few years, she might be able to sing that line again, from a different perspective.

Has anyone seen any store displays for the album? I've been to a few CD shops, and there wasn't even a card above the LDR section -

Depending on how quickly my local CD emporium can get their act together, I will have the official CD in my car stereo at about 10am Melbourne time = 8pm Thursday night, New York time. Any New Zealand fans should be able to get it a couple of hours earlier. It's going to be available digitally earlier than that. I'm not sure what the confusion is about -

About 90 hours to go until I get to walk into my local JB Hi Fi and ask a confused person working there about the record. (For Honeymoon, I arrived just after opening, and the woman who I asked about it had it in the box of CDs she was stacking the shelves with, and she still didn't know what I was talking about ) -
I'm not sure if this is well known about or not, but I first heard of Mars and Titanic from this podcast: http://www.harmontown.com/2013/06/episode-61-uss-hubris/ It's an unusual interview from about 3 years ago with the two of them, and mostly talks about how they respond to hatred from people on the internet. Their interview starts about 9 minutes in.
