who knows maybe the song will grow on me. but on first listen i just wasn’t feeling it.
SpoilerAt first i heard what u meant with the timing thing, but after listening again shes actually on time. The first time she says “watercolor eyes” in the chorus, “water” lands on the downbeat, the second time she makes “color” land on the downbeat and “water” is a pickup. The third time, the “wa” in water is back on the downbeat. Hope that makes sense.
When the beat gets more obvious in the second half of the song, the timing “issue” is gone. Any other tempo problems can be chalked up to rubato which is something she tries to do a lot, with varying degrees of success
I also could be wrong ive only listened twice.

Saw something about Lana debuting a new song on Euphoria from @Lanaismpoland on twitter. Is there any truth to this?

I love Lana, and I loved Chemtrails. But I do feel like BB was an unnecessary, quickly put-together release that does nothing to further her career both sonically and especially not as a pop star. The zero-wave traction territory she's in right now is pretty embarrassing when you consider she's the same person who wrote Born to Die. I just think she's lost a certain willpower, a certain spark, which is reflected in a complete lack of big songs, hits, good-quality music videos, promotion, and even the negligent way she dressed up to do Arcadia. It's like she's stopped caring. And it's tough for a die-hard fan to endure this BB era (undoubtedly her worst-ever era, even worse than Chemtrails).
I hardly think its that she ‘stopped caring’…
this is just who she is now. periodt.
get on board or get left behind.
shes above hits and big songs, shocking that this is even still a topic of discussion since shes been steadily going down this path for years.

Forget about just the score he gave Ultraviolence, watch the actual video. It's one of the most moronic ten minutes ever. You can't accuse him of being a misogynist, but he is an idiot - this is a guy who (rightly) loves Lingua Ignota, who is experimental, but can't deal with someone he's put in a different box trying to go out of it. Even when, if you look over all of Lana's career, she's constantly changed what she's done.
See im not sure his problem was with jer experimenting, but that the quality and execution wasnt good enough for him. a valid take, one i happen to disagree with, but it seems like people are putting words in his mouth sometimes. at least with this specific review.
-
F*ntano’s review was mostly valid, even though i disagree with him. He acknowledged that there were really solid songs and highlights on the album, which he thought were marred by her dedication to the “one take” aesthetic— not an insanely biased take by any measure.
I also find it interesting that so many people find this album to be “breaking the rules”, when so many hooks of the songs on this album just consist of one word or phrase sung three times, or just too much repetition for my taste in general.
Hes wrong abt dealer tho, if anything is wrong with it, its the hollow production.
Idk i was hoping for another 7 from him but i understand.
I also wanna clarify that even with my issues with the album, i still love it and its in my top 3.

Pitchfork on that sweet carolina verse:
“It’s funny and real, a reminder that the people we love most aren’t just the ones to whom we dedicate our earnest love songs—they’re often the recipients of our dumbest jokes.“
I actually really agree with this, one of my favorite verses, I think a lot of people are missing Lana’s sense of humor. and of all publications, PITCHFORK??? Gets it??? for once??

Omg i didnt mean to get everyone off topic hehe, i was just noticing it seems like theres been another shift against NFR now that BB came out. Personally, I like NFR because of how polished and clean it is, which is the same reason im gathering other people ARENT so fond of it. I just felt like the chaos and Lana-ness of BB, has pushed some people even further against NFR, which is lacking that chaos.
And after reading everyones responses, I can see that very few people actually think is “bad”— as in low quality, they just found the delivery to be too bland or safe?
Anyways, i think for my taste NFR wins, but i have also really been loving BB. Excited for us all to *officially* hear it in less than a day!
Much Love ❤️❤️

I’m not SUPER active on here all the time, but when did everyone start to hate NFR? Last I checked, it was the general consensus (from like everyone in the world) that it was her greatest album? Did that change now that BB is out (well, now that weve heard it)

My Current top 5:
If You Lay Down with Me
Violets for Roses
Thunder
Nectar of the Gods
Sweet Carolina
So fucking good guys

I was kinda iffy on the album when i first heard it, but now every song has grown on me, except for black bathing suit. idk if anyone cares but i’ll put the reason why in the spoilers
EDIT: To be clear, i absolutely love this fucking album. I think i LOVE every other song, so i’m hoping BBS clicks with me so this can be skipless for me.
SpoilerI feel like the song is so diverse from a structural standpoint that the producers and maybe even lana herself didn’t really know how to stitch it all together? I also feel like at times it feels like just vocals over those super chaotic drums, with really sparse piano and even sparser guitar. I think the chords behind the melody needed to be more prominent to make it make sense— but im getting the feeling that it wasnt her goal to make it make sense. I can hear the chords but the volume of them just isnt enough (for me). Even louder piano wouldve done the trick. Electric guitar, strings, or even a synth wouldve been great.
Im mostly curious to see how critics and the GA will respond to this one, not that it matters. But it seems like everyone here really likes this song and I dont want to yuck anyones yum.
Okay im done.

about the lyrics on the new songs:
Spoilerthe crypto forever line is one of my favorite lines ❤️ as far as i can tell shes already envisioning the stupid and cute shit her niece will do and what their normal life as a family will look like. i thought it was sweet

She doesn't need the coins and has basically hidden the songs from the locals so make it make sense
also sorry to chime in, pls nobody get mad at me.
but im thinking she mostly hid the songs from the locals so that her core fanbase would mostly be the ones listening. Shes probably hoping we already know of the ppl shes namedropping. So shes also probably hoping that we care about them because they are important to her and she cares about them.
if that makes any sense. but ofc everyone is free to like/dislike whatever they want.

it feels more like rubato, taking some time from certain words and giving extra time to others, but ending up on the same beat in the end.
i guess its up to you if she did it well, but i think that was the intention at least.

I liked Jack’s work but now it made me realise COCC could have been a brilliant and spectacular album if only he hadn’t “stripped down” so much. The melody in most of the songs in COCC is beautiful but it lacked a great production and vocals.
Can you imagine Chemtrails, Tulsa, Love Song and Cinnamon tracks with Mike Dean production? They would’ve been gems!
i think Chemtrails (song) was perfect with the slowburn buildup thing Jack likes to do. But the rest i feel couldve been amped up in a way :/

still rooting for another (rock) producer tho
yeah if she had a masseduction era, or even production like st. vincents new single... i would shit myself and then pass away perhaps.

I was really thrown off at first when I heard Wild at Heart, cuz the htd instrumentals caught me by surprise and took my out for a second. But now, after listening so many times, when she basically becomes a chorus with herself... ugh masterpiece.
edit: i also cant deal with randos who just don’t get White Dress :/ something not clicking... SOTY in my opinion

I didn't even get an email to say she released new music, no notification, nothing.
yeah same i just opened my spotify and the first thing that pops up is new music “for you” and its telling me to listen to Justice... payola

idk if this is against the rules to ask, but where is everyone listening to the album???

a lot of you guys have been saying this, but LMLYLAW is actually sounding really good recently, especially when you play it after COCC. they feel really cohesive... or maybe it just took 4 months to grow on me?

I know a lot of people talk about her wordiness and how her lyricism has gotten too complicated, but I really appreciate those ramblings that let us get to know her more. I actually have an issue with how simple and repetitive she can get, especially on songs like Candy Necklace, Let the Light in or Margaret– which I all still really enjoy. I think she resorts to coming up with a hook and then repeating it 3 or more times too often. To this day, I still think Mariners Apartment Complex is her best mixture of wordiness and simplicity, with just enough lyrical depth to be interesting and enough use of rhythm to feel like the song isnʻt falling asleep.
