It took me 48 hours, but I finally read everything.

I think this is the right thread to bring this up:

I was always fascinated about the interview that she says that she let the lyrics come to her

"XL. It requires a lot of self-control, doesn't it?

L.R. It's patience. Like letting the lyrics come to me. Sometimes is painful, but it's the only way. I feel that my path was revealed to me, but I needed to be an empty vessel for it to happen. Like an electrical conduit. Electricity does not go through you if you're blocked."

Maybe she's describing some sort of psychography (spirit writing/automatic writing)?
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_writing

She have her sun, mercury and mars in the 8th house. Her moon is on the 9th and pluto in the 12th. Her rising sign is scorpio. Those placements suggests mediumship, attraction to themes related to death, the occult and rebirth.

It also bugged me why someone like her would attend a church like Churchome. She seems so connect with God and the occult that believing in prosperity gospel would be a joke. But tonight it hit me. According to the reviews, Churchome encourages their participants to speak in tongues. Baptism by the fire is also commonly used in churches that follows the prosperity gospel. Maybe she's seeking a deeper spiritual connection? Not going only because of the church, but the things that she can experience at the church?

I feel like there's honestly not much to say.
She just became what she truly despised in the past. As much as she likes to think she's too cool/different for the pop scene, she alwas has been in search of approval from people and critics. Hence the politically correct/superficially woke/universal lyrics she's writing right now.

I don't necessarily think she doesn't know what to write about anymore or lacks challenges in her life to keep her art interesting. It's mainly she somehow developped the idea that people can't relate to her own experiences and that she NEEDS to be universal. Thing is, she's so detached it becomes bland, impersonal and, ironically, unrelatable.

I'm not sure if it makes sense, but for me, the more the story is personal and detailed, the more I'm able to relate to it, even though I didn't experience 100% of the events. It's like I'm able to find myself and a universal truth in the most personal stories, while feeling completely left behind by her attempted universal lyrics. The fact her commentary is so surface-level doesn't help. We get it, patriarchy made women's lives hell. So? How did it impact you? How do you fight it in your daily life?

Anyway, I believe she sought out approval so hard she lost herself (and some of her fans along the way). It's already been discussed by many recently, but it truly weakened her whole art to try and fail to please everyone.

yes I know, sorry I think I just explained that badly, I was referring to this quote:
'No, there was no bidding war. 679 where the only people to have the guts to offer a contract. Everyone else just wanted to look like they were about to offer. I met over 14 labels and only really took 2 seriously. I think everyone saw me as a project that had a lot of potential but also as someone very risky: I looked like a wild card to them. I had no manager, was doing all the meetings alone, was extremely confident and driven and knew exactly what i wanted. That scares some people.'
I suppose that explains the situation well enough but it would be nice to know what questions she asked them all the same, what were her terms that only one would actually offer a contract? (also, didn't she date Derek? I suppose she doesn't want to admit she picked a label because of that if it is true) I just want her to use all her knowledge for something good, instead of this weird "Twitter activism" it's like she wants to be an activist and have influence but she doesn't want any negative attention

Sorry to break it to y'all but I remember her saying somewhere that it was a lie and there were "obviously" no labels chasing her so Derek Davies who discovered her seems not to have had competition, truth be told her too cool to be indie too wise to be pop persona was very well-played.

No I agree. Not to get too far off topic but feminism was never supposed to be about hating men and I don't think it's particularly helpful to the (original) cause when it veers in that direction.
Of course the patriarchy is something we should aspire to dismantle, and it's okay to point out ways in which it exists and how women are disadvantaged by it (and vice versa), but that's different to what she's expressing, imo.
ETA: Obviously she has some anger, and it's okay to express that - but I want to hear her go deeper than just "men own this" and "men did that" over and over. I am absolutely sure that she, like every other woman in music, has been screwed over by powerful men in record companies, etc - and as someone a few posts up said, where are the details

what's most annoying about her poetry is that it could have been a genuinely insightful marinabook post, but she wants to vague post. what does she mean "men owned my choruses and my verses" does she not own her masters? do we need to crowdfund Electra Heart (Marina's Version)? will we finally get Froot (10 Minute Version)? or is this just about having a male boss?
if it's about her not having production credits on TFJ then why isn't she upset she didn't get production credits on purge the poison? is it because she made such a big deal about a 'woman's album' then had a man produce 7/10 tracks and felt the need to change that narrative? or is it about having men on her writing credits for EH (specifically htbah, like, come on... it did not take that many people to write that song) but then why didn't she give david kosten credit for the "back off motherfuckers" line on cpmd? because it didn't fit the narrative of writing it all herself? I'm not saying she doesn't have a right to be mad about her lack of production credits on TFJ or men muscling in on her work on EH, but why not shed some light and help other artists out?
it would be great if she made a post about her decision to leave atlantic, wbk they've fucked over a lot of artists and she's probably signed an NDA or something but what's HER reason for leaving? why did she leave instead of negotiate her contract? being independent is a huge risk, I'd love to know why. she could also help her younger fans (a lot seem to want to be artists themselves) spot red flags when a label is trying to scout them,* especially in this current age where getting millions of views on social media and a pretty face can land you a recording contract without much actual talent at all. these labels want naive teenagers/young adults to trap into a contract. I'm not suggesting Marina could 'shake up the industry' but even if she helped 1 or 2 people wouldn't that be worth it? save them from the things she went through? having to personally pay for the 1st froot photoshoot and mastering herself?
I feel like she genuinely doesn't know what to do after she 'achieved everything she wanted with froot' (her words). I was hoping her new work would be better, L+F was pushed out before she was ready (even if she insists it wasn't) and ADIAML was obviously just pushed out as quickly as possible to get out of her contract, but if these poems are anything to go by I am not looking hopeful which is a real shame
*edit: we all know about her getting signed, that there were loads of labels after her and she knew only 2 were serious, it would be such great insight if she ever explained this, she did all the interviews HERSELF in her early 20s!!! obviously a lot has changed since 2008, but most of the 'right questions' to ask will likely still be the same

there's no saving her pen now at this rate the minute her book is out it's going to get criticized so hard 'cause i swear it's gabbie hana style poetry

like i'm sorry i love her but this isn't it... how do you go from writing something like "I'm a Ruin" ON YOUR OWN to this pile of shit? it's just disappointing and those idiots that are gonna eat up everything are just fucking idiots. and this style of poetry doesn't only make wanna throw out my stan card, it's very fucking bad for the poetry community...

I feel awful for criticizing her because I love this woman, and it takes guts to write poetry and to share it with the world, but holy shit, that thing is horrendous.  I felt so embarrassed reading it.

It really made me think of the poems I used to write when I was an edgy teen.
No need to say I stopped poetry and shifted to only writing stories.

English isn't my mother tongue but I can tell it's incredibly bad style-wise.
It looks like she used every tools in the poetry box to make it a poem; on top of my head, the overused hunger metaphor she hammers throughout (the more you overdo it, the less it becomes powerful and/or significant), the artificial, useless repetitions (approve/try/grind/ and then the i am free), those stacked words (?? I only get it if it's for the rhythm, or perhaps to highlight them, but I'm not sure it's effective).

It's like she felt the need to use every figure of speech she knows so it looks like poetry. Real beginner error: it ends up being superficial and try-hard. It's not poetry but fancy words thrown on the paper just for the sake of it. It lacks subtelty and authenticity, which poetry should have.

And if you need to disguise your words to make sure people get what the fuck you're doing, you're doing really bad.

I didn't plan on ranting that much because of a harmless poem but here I am.  Good for her if she's proud of her work and good for the stans to have new content.
What makes me disappointed and embarrassed, though, is the fact that woman used to be such a GOOD songwriter. She used to express things so simply and beautifully. You're supposed to get better at your craft with time, not the opposite. Seriously, what happened?

Ugh I just really really don't like the poem. I don't understand the line breaks, they just feel really jarring. And I feel like theres no sense of cohesiveness, like its just a bunch of different ideas and images put together.

And btw I'm not the elitist type who gets mad at celebrities for doing poetry. I generally really liked Lana's. But this is just.. ugh..

This weird glorification of celebs like Pam is odd-she says some really dumb and uneducated things especially in regards to consent

The media has not corrected course, celebs like Britney are vilified just in different ways than before.

Marina, please spend your millionairess fortune and buy your diamonds back. The day you got rid of them was the day that your music became average af compared to the original flawless trilogy.

LA - who am I to love you? I'm malnourished by your placebos of love. I guess you could call it a textbook, I was looking for the father I wanted back. I was just a girl that you could not believe because it's harder, I was just a girl and all I really wanted was my father

My friend and I were literally just saying this last night
At some point (post Froot) it's like she just started writing what she thought people wanted to hear rather than genuine sentiments
People pleasing does not work in relation to art
She's been doing it for so long now that idk if she could really reverse it, though
I still like some of her more recent work but a lot of it is cringe

i mean.... we dont really know what happened so i think only assuming that marina was the one to drop lana after QFTC is a little out of touch and should really only be taken as speculative than as factual... though i wont say its a reach because i also wouldnt be surprised if that was the case..
but for example lana also has had multiple relationships where she was good friends with someone and then they disappear from her life (or at least what we see), such as with jaime king or johnny blueeyes

though i do agree marinas feminism is certainly something LMFAO.....and by something i mean post - FROOT a good chunk of it started lacking depth and more like she was spewing out whatever modern day issues she saw on the news was with some bits about being self made millionaire different kinda woman in hollywood ft. stuff she learned during her psychology classes that she took during her break from music
    * where as with her earlier works, her more feminism esque songs felt like something she was genuinely connected/related to than just trying to get across some sort of woke message

okay we like do not know a singular thing about their friendship at all or why exactly it ended so like why make assumptions

not our business then, now, or ever !

it weirds me out a LOT when people think they can speak on relationships that they were not apart of and frankly, know next to nothing about. worms for brains! social media and parasocial relationships have ruined some of y’all!

I kind of agree like i used to be a much bigger fan of Marina, which makes me sad to admit because I want to love her new stuff too

But imo Love + Fear and ADIAML just aren't as good as TFJ, EH, and Froot...like I don't really get what she's trying to do with her image now, but I miss when her lyrics about misogyny/sexism were more clever and not so straightforward

Idk its not like her new stuff is bad or anything but I listened to L+F and ADIAML for a month or so after they came out and I haven't listened to them since then....although to be fair, I haven't listened to anything but Lana for a while now so....
