Alternative Live Versions

Recommended Posts

I couldn't find a thread for the times that Lana performed versions of her songs that are significantly different from the album versions ("rock" versions, acoustic versions, etc.), so I figured I'd start my own. I don't have much yet bc there are performances I know of, like the "rock" versions of Body Electric and Off to the Races, but I don't know the dates/locations. Here's what I have so far, but it'd be great if anybody wants to help out and try to make a more complete list!

oh niiice! this is a great thread idea!

on 13/05/13, she performed a kind of extended version of Dark Paradise - one of my fav live performances actually

iTunes festival 25/09/12, she performs orchestral/acoustic versions of quite a few songs: Blue Jeans, Body Electric, Born To Die, Summertime Sadness, Million Dollar Man, Radio (my fav live version of this track ever!), Without You (also my fav of this track!!), National Anthem (truly amazing)

i'm not sure when exactly this was - 2012 i'm guessing? - but here she performs a demo version of 'Radio'

Edited to add some more! -

I feel like this counts as a sort of "rock version" of Burning Desire, she's performed this a couple of times but the absolute best version was at the ICONIC Olympia show :legend: 27/04/13

Rock version of Body Electric, Berlin 20/06/2014

Acoustic version of Ride that was.... somewhere? sometime? :scoff: idk she sounds great tho

Rock version of Young and Beautiful at Glastonbury, 2014

Always keen to share this knock out performance of Video Games in 2012 (her best performance of it ever) - with the string quartet and piano + a phenomenal held climax note.

@daphnedinkley that Radio demo performance is CRAZY, she sounds amazing! The iTunes performance is among some of my favourites too.

ETA: I've never listened closely to how much she changed those lyrics Radio at the iTunes performance?? She looks like she forgot the lyrics and made them up UGH ICONIC.

I heard the streets were paved with gold,
I did whatever I said I would.
I swore the songs would not get old,

cos that's what my father said I could. (lmao)

YES! i remember my first time watching it and the minute i heard her start the verse with "i heard the streeeeets weeeere paved with gooooold" i was like o shit she's gonna fuck up :creep: but then she pulled it off so well, and the little high pitched tone on "whatever i said i would" always makes me melt :defeated:

For the record:

- During the 2011 European tour, Lana pretty much performed the demo versions of all the songs with additional production from her band, that were a part of the set-list, excluding "Video Games", "Blue Jeans", "Diet Mountain Dew" and "You Can Be The Boss" (as it never made it to the album, but who knows if Emile Haynie tried to reproduce it). If I remember correctly, in an interview (maybe even several) before the start of 2012, she mentioned that the album was halfway done, as the songs were recorded but the production was in the works, which I guess would be the reason why. Gladly, we have a majority of the demos:

1. Radio

Spoiler

As mentioned by @daphnedinkley earlier, a good example of "Radio"

And the demo:

2. Off to The Races

Spoiler

Live:

Demo (from the album sampler):

3. Born to Die

Spoiler

Live:

Demo (I think this is the one that came from Ben Mawson's soundcloud?):

4. Million Dollar Man

Spoiler

Live:

Demo:

5. Without You (this is the only one we don't have the exact same version, but the first half of the demo is the same, could be just the band adding it to it)

Spoiler

Live:

Demo (sorry for the wrong pitch, this is the only YouTube video I can find of the version I'm mentioning)

- During 2012, nearly all the shows starting from the El Rey Theater to the iTunes Festival were drum-less, in the same style of Video Games. I remember she boasted about it in a few interviews.

And of course, this immaculate acoustic version of "Gramma":

Back in 2012, she performed four pieces on NPR, and they were all beautiful and quite subdued with stripped back instrumentation and no drums. Vocals are top notch!

Spoiler

It's live the MTV Unplugged album we'll never get lol.
