Lana's diction and incomprehensible lyrics

Recommended Posts

Fellow Lana worshipers, I'm a soul in need. We all know Lana likes to adopt certain accents or ways of pronouncing words that make some of them hard to be understood clearly. Do you have problems understanding what Lana's trying to say in certain songs? Here is a list of mine, if you also have doubts about what the hell is she saying in some of her songs, and —just like me— would like to find out the real words, please add your lyrics so we could make them out clearly (or try to guess what sounds the most logical, at least).

• 'Lust For Life'

-There's no need for us to:

• come away

• complain

• come and lay

-Too much fun tonight:

• And A lust for life

• And OUR lust for life

• 'Sad Girl'

-His Bonnie on the side makes me:

• sad, sad, girl

• a sad, sad girl

• so sad, girl

• 'Shades of Cool'

-I'm one of many:

• Bonnies blue

• One is blue

•'Fuck My Way Up to the Top'

-Tell me something:

• Like, I'm your favorite girl

• Nice, 'bout your favorite girl

• 'Fuck It I Love You'

-California dreamin' got my money on my mind:

• jazz is in my veins

• drugs is in my veins

• chances in my veins

Just now, sexyslutboy said:

From Religion I thought "In the eye we'll stay" was "In thee I will stay"

i definitely have more but i can't think of them right now

Ohhh, if it wasn't for the 'storm' line before it, it would actually sound pretty cool, it'd make sense!

This line actually turned out to be neither of these, but rather: "tell me songs at night 'bout your favourite girl"

It can be heard clearly during this performance at 1:27 -

Live performances can be a great resource to weed out those uncertain lyrics. It also helped solved the PWYC bridge mystery.

I think the two biggest unsolved lyrical mysteries for me will always be Bel Air & Trash Magic

Grenadine sunshine

?????

Darling I'm waiting to greet you

Used to go to the ???
Where you'd buy me a slice of cherry pie

I’m sure there’s a lot that will come to mind if I really think about it, but to follow up on the ones you highlighted this is how I hear the lines:

-There’s no need for us to come lay (which makes no sense but whateva ahah) :lolliney:

-And a lust for life :bodyisready:

-His Bonnie on the side makes me a sad, sad girl :crying:

-I’m one of many bonnies blue

-Tell me songs at night bout your favorite girl as Elle said - I never heard this particular line any other way :awkney:

-Jazz is in my veins :beyonce:

And a bonus, my preference for West Coast is “he’s crazy y cubano como yo my love” even though I’m pretty sure it’s “la la” which sounds like sis couldn’t come up with two extra syllables :nono:

In Bel Air I hear, "can you face this heart of mine?"

It's always annoyed me that no lyric is listed in any booklets for that spot when there's clearly an extra line there urgh.

i just find it hilarious that every single website has slightly different lyrics for the guns and roses bridge :bebe:

there are so many i had to put it in a spoiler it would've been obnoxious

Spoiler

I can feel it coming in the air tonight
See you workin' on that blue Pacific
I can see you bathing in the summer light
Turnin' tan and you look terrific

I can feel it coming in the air tonight
See you walking on that [?]
I can see you bathing in the summer light
Turning tan in your left, I think

I can feel it coming in the air tonight
See you walking on that blue Pacific
I can see you bathing in the summer light
Turning tan and you look terrific

I can feel it coming in the air tonight
See you walking on the blue Pacific,
I can see you bathing in the summer light
Turnin' tan, I'm in love to
Turning tan in your left, I think

I can feel it comin' in the air tonight
See you workin' on that blue Pacific
I can see you bathing in the summer light
Turnin' tan, and you left terrific

I can feel it coming in the island tonight
...
Turning tan in...
I can see you bathing in the sun light

I can feel coming in the air tonight,
See you workin' on that blue Pacific,
I can see you bathing in the summer light,
Turnin' tan, I'm in love too

i definitely hear it as

"i can feel in coming in the air tonight

see you walking on that blue pacific

i can see you bathing in the summer light

turning tan and you look terrific"

For the longtest time I thought the chorus of Salvatore was “Ah ah ah ah ah salvatoreeee”. One day I met a Lana stan and he asked me what my favorite Lana song was and I said Salvatore to show him I knew the deep cuts. I was so excited to meet someone IRL who loved Lana, I just started singing the chorus in front of him and then he told me “actually it's cacciatore” and I haven't recovered since :rip:

Oh, if only we had access to the stems/vocal mixes of some of this songs to understand the words...

As she has admitted that being lazy is the reason why she doesn't put the lyrics on the booklets anymore, smh.
