three songs mention cruel world

WW - i wouldn't know how cruel the world was

CB - it's a cruel, cruel world

Nectar - what cruel world is this?

if it signifies a theme in these songs it would make sense why she ended up picking CB and Nectar as the outtakes that would make the cut

also is CB about her mommy'ing her man?

ahh, anyways i'm really enjoying the album

Spoiler

Oooh I love this! I somehow hadn’t racked up just how many time that phrase is used- and since it’s one of my fav songs as well I loved the connection (also makes sense since a bunch of these are UV era outtakes). Love that Lana still uses so many of the same world building techniques she’s always used (repetitions of certain phrases/images/metaphors).

I’ve been a total charlatan and listening to only the 5 unheard songs on the album but it must be said that nectar & CB are two of her greatest unreleased of all time and it’s just lovely to see them get their moment in the sun

Ok I couldn't resist and gaved in a bit :oic2:

I listened to Dealer and Thunder because I've been obssessed with the leaks so I might as well listen to the final versions while waiting for BB this Friday.

Spoiler

I think each one and their demos serve for different moods.

Dealer (demo/pitched) sounds great although I definitely prefer the album version since Miles' voice sounds better, Lana's too, sultry and much clearer. I also like the pace of the final version better, a bit slower as if the listener is under the effect of something lol

Thunder demo is a serve and gives off those rockish-indie-alternative vibes + the intro is bomb, one of my faves from her! but there is TLSP written all over it. I would like it if she were to use it for live presentations (cough cough Colbert) and touring :flutter: since it's filled with so much energy. The album version sounds much more like a Lana Del Rey track, it's simply amazing how she reworked such an already great song! It's evocative and makes me FEEL something, specially when the violins come in and the melody escalates, then the back up singers joining Lana at the end <3 a change for the better imo.

Why do I see no difference? lol I thought it was the same as the version available on streaming platforms.

I thought I saw someone mention this but can’t find the reply:

I don’t really care a ton about his opinions, but I’m really interested to see Anthony Fantano’s thoughts on this record given his wildly varying responses to Lana’s discography.

After watching his past critiques on Lana’s music, I think he might give it a 6 or light 7. A lot of stylistic choices he’s criticized in the past seem more apparent on this record, but we’ll see!

My guess is that he’ll enjoy Thunder/VFR but hate Beautiful and Dealer. I think he responded fairly positively to the triple singles, too

I'm struggling with figuring out his score for this album. It has several strong points so I can't see it getting less than a 6. He gave LFL a 6 and BB is definitely better than that one. I will be disappointed if it does get a 6 or less because it definitely deserves at least a 7/8.

I agree that he probably won't like Dealer, lol.

There's a lot of connections lyrically within songs on the album that I've noticed. Here's a little "masterlist" I've complied of some of the ones I picked up on. I feel like these really point to the themes of the album.

Spoiler

Lana's Parents: "I was looking for the father I wanted back", "You got a Thunderbird, my daddy had one too" "God, I wish I was with my father" - Text Book

"I'm not friends with my mother, I still love my dad" - Black Bathing Suit

"My father never stepped in when his wife would rage at me" - Wildflower Wildfire

Cruel world: "I wouldn't know how cruel the world was" - Wildflower Wildfire

"What cruel world is this, nectar of the gods?" - Nectar of the Gods

"It's a cruel, cruel world, but we don't care" - Cherry Blossom

Painting/art: "Paint my banisters blue", "Now when weather turns to May, all my sisters come to paint my banisters green...and grey"  - Blue Banisters

"What if someone had asked Picasso not to be sad? Never known who he was or the man he'd become, there would be no blue period" - Beautiful

Phones: "Please don't try to find me through my dealer, he won't pick up his phone", "555-987-455, now you've got a busy tone, all circuits are busy" - Dealer

"I call you up twice, hang up the phone, call again, I wanna talk" - Nectar of the Gods

"You name your babe Lilac Heaven after your iPhone 11" - Sweet Carolina

Fire/burning: "I'm scared of the Santa Clarita fires, I wish that it would rain" - Blue Banisters

"My lips like the fire licks the bay" - Arcadia

"Burn by fire without trial like a stowaway" - If You Lie Down With Me

"Cause if you're on fire, you're on fire, just keeping burning" - Thunder

"I wouldn't know what hot fire was", "hot fire, hot weather, hot coffee, I'm better", "not to turn into a wildfire to light up your night", "I'll do my best never to turn into something that burns/I promise that nothing will burn you" - Wildflower Wildfire

Flowers - "There were flowers that were dry, they were sitting on the dresser" - Blue Banisters

"Larchmont village (?) smells like lilies of the valley", "You made me trade my violets for roses", "God knows the only mistake a man can make is trying to make woman trade her violets for roses"  - Violets for Roses

"I'll lie down like a bed of wildflower and I'll always make the sheets smell like gardenias wild at your feet", "I'll be like the wildflower" - Wildflower Wildfire

"I push you high, cherry blossom", "dandelions in your hair, baby" - Cherry Blossom

"You name your babe Lilac Heaven" - Sweet Carolina

California, places in California: "And I thought I found it in Brentwood" - Text Book

"I'm scared of the Santa Clarita fires, I wish that it would rain" - Blue Banisters

"My body is a map of L.A", "My chest the Sierra Madre", "Arcadia, all roads that lead to you as integral to me as arteries", "My curves, San Gabriel all day" - Arcadia

"LA, 'hey' on Zoom, Target parking lot (?)"  - Black Bathing Suit

"Larchmont village (?) smells like lilies of the valley", "like the Paramount sign sparkling just for me" - Violets for Roses

"California, homeland of the gods" Nectar of the Gods

Blue: "Standing blue with open arms" - Text Book

"Said he'd come every May just to help me if I paint my banisters blue", "All my sisters come to paint my banisters green, my blue banisters grey" - Blue Banisters

"Mail me when you get the blues" - Black Bathing Suit

"What if someone had asked Picasso not to be sad? Never known who he was or the man he'd become, there would be no blue period", "I can turn blue into something" - Beautiful

"I get wild and fucking crazy like the color blue" - Nectar of the Gods

"Might be unprepared for having the baby blues", "If you're ever stressed out, just dance in the night, if you get those baby blues"  - Sweet Carolina

Angels/Heaven: "Spring, I sleep, Heaven knows" - Blue Banisters

"I stand straight like an angel with a halo" - Arcadia

"I sing like an angel, my heart's like one too" - Black Bathing Suit

"Angelina on your sycamore tree" (it counts i don't care) - Cherry Blossom

"You name your babe Lilac Heaven" - Sweet Carolina

These are just a few that came to my mind, but I most likely forgot a bunch lol
