MARINA (and The Diamonds)

they're relatable & right on the point (and Marina's lyricism stands out for being like that)

do they tho? to me they seem extremely generic...

like

Quote

You opened up Pandora's box
You don't know what you just unlocked
I lose all control
Let go of my darkest thoughts
'Cause I see the truth, we were stacked against the odds
And I pray that hope's not lost

Quote

Do you expect me to believe that you've changed
When I can tell that you're exactly the same?
You'd rather shut your eyes than feel any pain
Told myself I can't go back ever again

Quote

I fucked it up, I lost it all
And my life might not be what I thought
But I wouldn't change a thing
Goodbye to the girl that I'd been

these are literally high schoolers level lyrics, they're very shallow and there's nothing more to them than what they seem...

I think ADIAML would've been much better without all those breakup songs like Pandora's Box or I Love You But I Love Me More. They're quite forgettable and do not fit the album theme at all. I understand that she wanted to express her feelings about her ex boyfriend but she could've released an EP with them instead. Also who feels like listening to an album that's about fighting patriarchy and then suddenly crying over an ex? There were so many important feminist / ecology / anti-patriarchy / anticapitalist / gender roles themes to explore and we only got a few songs about it. And really, if she thinks that singing "I'mma free, I'mma free womaaaaaan" in a deluxe will do this record any justice, she's wrong. I hope, however, that this song is not as hollow as it seems.

Yeah I also feel like the album's biggest problem is how it starts out like a power stomper, with bubbly production and lyrics about social topics and then just kinda disgresses into a bunch of break-up ballads. While Pandora's Box, Flowers and Goodbye are nice songs and textbook examples of Marinas signature writing, I would have preferred her to actually stick with the route she seemingly wanted to take for this album - both sonically and thematically. And it seems like the Deluxe will just double down on this problem with songs like Happy Loner - which is something I'm really excited to hear but is also another step away from the first half ofthe album and into Marina's comfort zone.

ADIAML title track still one of the best songs released this year but overall ADIAML’s a 6/10 for me. I do still think a good deluxe could improve this album a lot but I feel like she’s just gonna tack a few new slow songs at the end of the album & it won’t really have much impact.

Like literally all this album needs for me to make it a Good album is a few more upbeat songs like ADIAML and Venus Fly Trap (or sonically like New America/PTP but NOT with those corny ass lyrics) & a better tracklist order.

I mean, I personally find lyrics like:

Spoiler

And there's no heartbreak left to feel
It happened years ago
After you made your choices
I melted away like snow
'Cause you like lying to yourself
And now I'll never know
What parts of your love were for real
And what parts were for show

Spoiler

Yeah, I thought it would get better
I kept my hope alive
But I don't wanna be the bearer
Of pain just so we can survive

Spoiler

I've been a mother to everyone else
To every motherfucker except myself
And I don't even have any kids
Goodbye to the girl that I'd been

Spoiler

How can I trust you after what I've been through?
You only care about me when it suits you
Women love too early and men love too late
And now your promises, they just suffocate

Again: relatable (at least to me) and direct, which is something I missed from Marina. They might be kinda cliché, yet not absolutely generic nor uninspired, but cada quien!

now i see it, those lyrics are definitely better (although the motherfucker line is kinda cringe) but still it's 50/50, the quality is not really consistent

Agree, her quality is really inconsistent these days. That verse from Flowers was really perfect. The rest is so basic it hurts. She used to be such a good lyricist and she STILL can write good lyrics, she just lowered her sights. Imagine the power New America would have if she didn't say "ok whatever, i'm done" suddenly.

I had a dream about Happy Loner and it sounded just like Enjoy Your Life... :O

Glad that some dreams can't come true!

I just fell into a Marina rabbit hole again and man…I give her shit but I honestly love her so much. she was so crucial to my formative years as a fag and I think she’ll always be such a unique talent

idk if this is a popular opinion or not but living dead is SO good, much prefer it to how to be a heartbreaker. love full goth marina the most.

living dead one of the best songs to come from that era and most of that era is fantastic
