also, I don’t think I ever knew until reading this article that they changed born to die to be poppier right before release. I wish I could hear it in its original version that she first intended. it is annoying, like she said, that because of that switch by the label, it changed her public perception to be a pop artist with a manufactured persona versus a diaristic singer-songwriter with a pen name.

We really need Born to Die (Lana’s Version) with vault tracks, more than ever :true:

It's a beautiful life, remember that too, for me.

SOOOOOO HAPPY I ordered this!
best interview thus far this era…

The way she talks about her psychic, metaphysics, her happiness…

like a warm hug from an old friend.
“it’s beautiful, how this deep, normality settles down over me” :crying4:

i wish nothing but the continued happiness for her. she deserves nothing less. Also… time to re-read The Bell Jar for the 50th time :crai:

your vulgar darling  :blush3:

Fascinating that Lana has read William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and Experience. I’ve always associated Blake with Lana, as they explore a lot of similar themes about spiritual redemption, but didn’t realize she had actually read his work. It’s a great collection of short poems, if any of you are interested.

I love interviews like this where when you’re reading it, it seems like you’re a fly on the wall listening in on a conversation between two friends - or maybe even joining them in a third chair placed around in a triangle. Amazing read - great questions asked by Hannah, and insightful responses given by Lana. I always love learning more about her personally with what she shares with us through lyrics, poetry, and interviews - even 11 years later, I’m still as interested as I was the very first day. She’s both enigmatic and pellucid at the same time. Love her x

Lana says a lot of things in interviews tbh, having access to the demos(which we all have) the album was always in a similar vein- baroque pop with trip hop mixed with other inspo creating her alt pop sound.

It likely is more uptempo which you can you see but I doubt it was entirely a label decision.

Did we ever discover who’s this man she was with on & off for years but were never seeing together?? I remember it being discussed here

I believe this is referencing Chase Stogel, who she was dating on & off between 2017-2019. They were pictured together a few times over the years, but their relationship was never publicly declared and was largely secretive. I would assume much of NFR was inspired by him, especially the title track, FIILY, Cinnamon Girl, Bartender, & Happiness is a Butterfly x

A lot of the demos are more pop imo lol… the sound that ended up happening on btd is so unique and I know she obviously still loves that album but her describing it as kind of “pick me” makes me sad:krylie:

NFR could def be inspired by him… Rumour also has it that she had a fling with Jonathan Wilson and that the title track is inspired by him 👀

Agreed, Jealous Girl, Motel 6, Queen of Distaster to name a few, but a lot of them are more main stream pop sounding than what ended up on BTD.

There are some more ominous demos here and there- some of the Lolita ones spring to mind and the dark paradise one but yeah if the label were so worried-they wouldn’t have picked the slowest songs as singles when off to the races and diet Mountain Dew were right there.

Jack come get your girl! They really made so much sense together, but judging by his IG he doesn’t seem to be in the settle down phase Lana’s in.

But still, I’m rooting for them to make it work. A match made in…

Re: BTD, I think she's just grown over the past 10 years. She's said in multiple interviews she loves the albums she makes, but it only makes sense that she would evolve in reflecting about them as time passes.

Re: BB. I'm gonna write a lot for a sec, so bear with me.

It felt so good to read her intention of what that album means to her, because I've always been sliiiiightly confused by it, in an endearing way. Like, it was basically a brand new album from her, and not a compilation album... but a handful of the tracks are old recordings, there are multiple producers, mixers - it's just a total hodge-podge of an album. I've always viewed it as this sort of explanatory, messy scrapbook of an album crafted by Lana where she mines and muddles her current state with parts of her past/history. To have clarity that she sees it as (sort of) Further Listening, or a companion album to her discography for a deeper dive, or even just "One For the Hardcore Fans" is really enlightening. It wasn't ever intended to be this perfect, tightly-focused pillar album in her discography... It's a stepping stone, supporting documents, a "defense", explanation.

Obviously, we were spoiled in 2021 despite everything going on and received two albums in one year, but I wonder if she considers Ocean Blvd to be the fully realized follow-up to Chemtrails after the side-detour that was BB (thinking of it as a map, I guess)?

Anyway. I love when she talks about her albums individually because it presents them in a new light for me, especially as she continues to develop her discography. Every album has its place, and we're lucky to stan an artist who gives so much of herself as Lana does.
