The fact that SYTH is ourstreaming all the songs on OB

Yeah, but I can’t say that I’m surprised: SYTH was already a fan-fave for many months now and its format makes it easier to have big streaming numbers: at 3:30, I rarely listen to it once.

and let’s face it: OB is a masterpiece, but most songs aren’t very light in tone, when they’re not very very long. Not the best for big numbers.

since Norman, there’s a « pattern » of some sort when it comes to her releases: she makes the singer-songwriter records she wants, and there are collabs or a standalone single in this case that are extremely successful, which makes everyone « happy »

Very true.

But still - it's quite bizarre that Say Yes to Heaven already has as many views as the Candy Necklace video with it's super pricey budget, glam image and well-received new album behind it.

It just proves what I've been saying for weeks - that Candy Necklace was the absolute wrong choice for a single/video. If she'd spent as much money on a  sexy AW video, we would have had 30 millions by now, at least.

She needs to get it into her head that people only watch videos that make them feel good - making a video for sad songs ( Arcadia, White Dress, Candy Necklace, Blue Banisters) - is a complete and utter waste of money.

Since I love Candy Necklace’s MV so much, I’ll never say she made the wrong choice to give this song the MV treatment :smokes:

i think the format of the MV (take an already long song and make it a 10 min mini film where the song is paused) surely has played a big role in the numbers… I haven’t checked for FIILY and the greatest, but I don’t remember this double MV having made an impact. Besides, she went down the concept route rather than the « classic MV » one.

Like you said, A big-budget for a&w could have been a better choice, even if it’s a very long song.

The music industry doesn’t seem to really know if MV are a good investment right now, in the streaming and TikTok age. They don’t perform as well as they used to.  Other big artists don’t have as many MVs as they used to in different eras. Unless you’re an emerging (and physically cute / gorgeous) artist, the need for MVs seems to be dying, sadly.

I think she never wanted to boost anything with the Candy Necklace MV, she did it for artistic reasons, for the closer fans and because the song has a special meaning to her

AW is not a happy song either - make it make sense

Just do it. Just do it - don't wait!

It clearly ain’t. But the Jimmy part tricks a lot of people thinking it’s a slutty / boppish for the clubs song :omfg2:

I agree with you. Actually, I adore the CN MV - it's one of my all-time favs. But she could have done AW for promotion and THEN CN.

As for the music industry, it's very sad indeed. A music video ads an image to a song and helps people understand the music better. It has done wonders for Lana at the start.

Songs aren't divided into sed and happy. AW is sexy and intriguing and neurotic and upbeat (in the latter part) and modern.

I'm not saying she should only make videos for her happy songs. Rather, that she should avoid making them for her miserable songs.

Even Let the Light in would probably have more views than CN.

I know it’s been discussed to death but I refuse to believe the official lyrics to A&W are

God's a charlatan, don't look back, babe
Puts the shower on while he calls me

It just doesn’t flow right or make sense. To me, she saying what she sang in that car video but did a better job of censoring unlike Fingertips

3:23 — 'Got a shhh who turned down the backbeat'. That's what I hear on the acapella.

it's been nearly a month and my favorite lyrics/ stand out to me are:

"so you say there's a chance, for us?" "do you think about heaven? do you think about me?"
"it's like camarillo only silver mirrors runnin down the corridor" "fuck me to death, love me until I love myself"
"what you don't really understand, is that I've got magic in my hands, stars in my eyes"

"love me if you love enough, you can be my light"
I wanna say "callin aquaman to my bedroom, ended up we fucked on the hotel floor" feels a lot more iconic

"rhino designer" "infatuated w Adam's son, why are you so fascinated with me?"

"fortune teller, favorite ever, that's the story of us" "white noise comin out of my brain, turns off for nothin" "i feel lucky"

"probably runnin away from the feelings today, in the snow-capped mountains of the desert" "I don't know anyone else that knows the songs that I sing..."
"it's just that I don't trust myself, with my heart- so i had to let it break a little more, cus they say that's what it's for"

So much in Fingertips

first verse of grandfather, "cus i'm good in spirit, warm-bodied a fallible deity wrapped up in white"
"when you know, you know"

"like hollywood and me, that diamond on your ring, the soul that you bring to the table"
"lately i've been sunnin in the LA riverbed, wearing nothin but the summer bruises on my knees" "I wish I could skinny dip in your mind"
"i'm like fuck it dance naked for the neighbors i open up the blinds" "Hands on your knees, I'm Angelina Jolie..."
"knife in my jacket, honey on the vine, baby I'll bring the coffee if you bring the wine"

"when I'm violent it's Carlito's Way" "spin it til you whip it into whipped cream, baby" "imagine if we actually gave a fuck"

the lyricism spins from deep, poignant, to just plain immaculate like polished metal.

----------------

such a solid, active album.
btd's energy feels like running or escaping a casino
uv's like a seedy underground bar/ studio / motel w great amenities
honeymoon' feels aptly like the glamorous world of hollywood and all that that means
lfl, modern hollywood woodstock
nfr, titanic the film, as well as an art indie cinema film
chemtrails, like a lazy day in an opulent garden waiting for that something to feel alive again
blue banisters, a funeral of a past self, shedding herself of clothes from a past world

and I know that it's just been a month but. in some kind of strange way, I think it might be, i can't articulate it to the exact point but, she feels the most alive and present here. sounds like she's the most awake here, the most present. and i think she does that w the clear instrumentation and her vocals.

the photoshoots, the album imagery w the different covers/ visuals. the way candy necklace's video was presented to us, and the meta hollywood star moment.

i feel so grateful to be able to be experiencing this, and having albums i've already known of hers beforehand just adds to it. it feels like- like ur being rewarded for coming this far with her music and her journey as an artist. i know that not much is happening at the moment, but i deem it as a pivotal sort of time, experiencing all this art, feelin like life's woven some kind of magic and wonder thru this album and her art. just wow- thank u Lana 💕

We do not talk enough about how the title track is one of her best songs..

The last minute is so….

I listened to the instrumental last night on my drive home and ascended on the highway everything about the title track is flawless :oprah:

So now that the dust has settled a bit, I think this album may be sliding a bit down on the list of my favorite Lana albums, but I still consider it to be her best or close to it objectively. I originally considered it my #1 favorite Lana album, but I find myself wanting to skip the title track, Fingertips, Grandfather, LTLI, and Margaret now. But maybe I'm just in that "I overplayed the album" phase. I don't think I've ever had an album where I haven't wanted to skip at least one track eventually.

"The Grants" is kinda the biggest grower of all time.

"You can't be a muse and be happy, too.

You can't blacken the pages with Russian poetry and be happy." - Blue Banisters

I asked Asmodeus (the demon of lust) to make Miley Cyrus suffer. I am not happy with these new developments. After Miley rips off Lana's aesthetic, she bullies Lana into changing her release date. It is infuriating.
