Well yeah, you can identify it as a genre by attaching it to key exemplars that may (or may not) go out of date. I just think it's futile, because the definition of pop will change. And while I think Kendrick Lamar has a genre attached to him, that doesn't mean he can't be popular (or even classical). I mean I'm trying to be provocative because of the thread topic, but to classify things as pop when they are a certain way seems way less interesting (and frequently infuriatingly hard) than just saying it's a competition for popularity.

 

Frank Zappa, the iconic non-conformist, said that the reason the music industry was worse during his end times (and possibly our times) was because people had strong expectations for what popular should be (without any talent to back it up). I suspect he thought genre stereotyping was kind of harmful, although it's impossible not to use genres to organize musical discussion. However, "popular" may have been the most damaging one with respect to ham-stringing artist creativity.

Those three songs had a terrible effect on me and I don't think that I can handle more of this. My muscles were so tense that I needed 2 massage sessions to relieve it, the bruxism is almost gone by now but it still sucks. And I also don't want to keep unpacking forgotten memories and feeling guilty by them.

I was sent to therapy 4 times while growing up and I never talked about my mom or my childhood. Not even to my friends or even my father and my grandmother

Oh sweet soul, I'm so sorry your travels have been so dark. It sounds awful and you certainly deserve peace. Here's a glass raised to you that she puts at least one semi shallow summer bop on the album so you can stay with us through release. If you ever want to, the album will be here for you to revisit but never feel guilty for processing at your own rate.

The songs are heavy and not really something that I could listen to casually tbh only when I am in a specific mood . I can't imagine how difficult it can be for someone with trauma . I really hope there are some lighter songs on the album  so you can enjoy it more <3

@BluebirdXO oh my sweetie, another broken soul because of their mother... I am just like you but I have different opinion about that childhood traumas. For me, it is beautiful to see similar soul (read: Lana) who has similar traumatic past because I am looking for a direction and knowledge from these songs. That's why I don't feel like I cant listen to them (right now of course). I am trying to deal with past in an open way (means I want to work on those feelings which memories are still causing) and Lana's WW is like support for this.

 Anyway, I send you so much love, you do you and remember that you could always talk with us here

I understand how you feel, and you are right not to listen to her future album if you feel bad. Lana is fascinating but brings back painful memories. Honeymoon arrived at a very traumatic time in my life and it took 5 years before I could really listen to her, the slightest sound took me to very dark memories and in total depression, she has the gift of taking you to the lower even though her music is excellent. I hope you are doing well and that you will be able to overcome these traumas that haunt your life. Stay away from anything that can hurt you. We are like a little family here, and there is enough news on her new album for her to be able to follow her from a distance. Courage my girl and don't hesitate to speak if you are not well

100%. NFR was released at the worst time of my life and I couldn't handle even songs like FIILY. I feel I still can't listen to that album like normal just because it takes me back to that year. And that's ok!!

Her music is like quicksand, we can really sink and when all is not well her music is not a refuge but a trap for many of us. I hope so and I understand how you feel too. Hopefully everything will be better for all of us. Take care of yourself my friend

feel this so hard skkk something was really in the water during late summer 2019 huh? similar to you, I still can't listen to that album without certain feelings coming back. also funnily enough, FIILY is one of my least favourite released songs sort of because of that, which I feel is an unpopular opinion within itself x

Literally couldve been such a sexy sad girl esque juxtaposing anthem, but they failed it in every aspect. I listened to it through for the first time in forever the other day, and it wasn't as terrible as i remember, but it was missing sooooo much oomf. It deserved atleast A BEAT...

No shame in that, I get that it's lyrically an amazing song. But the overall melody and vibe does nothing to me. It's just overlong. Agreed with @mansfield ringer it could've been another sexy sad girl-esque anthem, alas it turned out to be a bore.
