Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth criticizes Lana in memoir

Recommended Posts

Waiting for Azealia Banks to say something on this. I bet Lana herself would have a lot to say but she NEVER goes public about this stuff.

The saddest thing about this is if this happened to someone like Lorde or Taylor Swift everyone one would immediately come to their defence, fan or not, the things Kim Gordon said are that harsh, but Lana is always left to fend for herself. She's like the nerdy kid in high school, everyone sees this stuff happen to her but they just watch. No one thinks to throw her any fucking support.

Also I must be forgetting the song where Lana says no to voting or earning equal pay.

Let's just list all the sexism displayed in this paragraph:

1 Slut-Shaming Lana for her taste in men and lovemaking.

2 Criticising Lana's apt description of a true feminist because Lana said it.

3 Insinuating that Lana shouldn't sing as an individual who has chosen a different lifestyle to her, but instead sing about very certain topics. She's basically saying that Lana Del Rey's experiences are less valuable because she's a female, she should be singing about how independent she is and act like everyone wants her too because anything less is just unheard of in society (Jim Morrison, Kanye West, Eminem, pretty much all male rappers)

4 Advising Lana to kill herself. This isn't sexist so much as simply inhumane and reprehensibly irresponsible.

Does Kim think she's gonna get away with all this?

but not so much from kim gordon -- human woman approaching death, somewhat threatened by the vision, intellect (and beauty) of the young pop starlet (currently bleeding into the art-world with increasing credibility)

what an odd and stupid thing to say really.

didn't know tearing other women down and saying they should kill themselves for doing what they want is what feminism is really about! thanks, kim!

but in all seriousness, this confuses me. if lana "doesn't know what feminism is", then why not teach her instead of publicly telling her she should kill herself in a published book? and what is the bs that she's implying women can't do whatever they want? if she's so worried about lana she should've talked to her like a grown woman. i see this as a ploy for publicity to get attention to the memoir- all the media stories are about the memoir are about her thoughts on lana. this is disappointing coming from a 60 year old woman, i would hear this from a 17 year old. this isn't feminism.

This is interesting. I feel like Lana has made her place in history and not in the way she wanted to.

Kim seemed not to like Lana, in general, from her tone and wording in the quote. In any case, she's using her version of what feminism is to put down the choices she doesn't like of another woman. It's one thing to have an opinion about someone, it's another to feel the need to shame/humiliate them. I would assume she had an agenda. Based on her twitter feed that would appear so. She had to have known the controversy this would generate and she seems to be taking some form of pleasure in all of it.

Note how Kim retweets a few pissed off Lana fans who defend their fave, as if to say "look how childish and stupid they are!" When she legitimately asked a girl to kill herself and published it in a book. Such a class act.

The bitch even retweeted someone saying "Kim Gordon has had a bigger impact in music than Lana Del Rey ever will"

Arrogant cunt. And we're supposed to sit quietly and allow her to trash her fellow woman because she was a big deal in the 90s?

Hmm, I really wanted to write something more thoughtful after coming home while tryiing to give this woman a chance. Sadly, as many others have stated she is taking it to Twitter for attention.

And it is a stunt to sell her book. She clearly knows that many feminists (the sex-negative ones and the older generation) are not too keen on Lana and that Lana has a big following of fans and haters.

This is actually not bad for Lana. She makes the experience that a petty woman whose hey-days are long gone now tries to make some cash with her name.

And how very petty she is when she calls the men "older ugly guys", where you would think that a feminst is more interest in things that are not so superficial like "beauty". Let's not even talk about the fact that it is not really a comment that stands for equality of the sexes either. Besides that; I really wanna see the good looking guys she has dated over the years. Really eager to know.

It's funny that she is coming for Lana and not women like Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears or Rihanna, but no, she choses to come for Lana instead.

This is something I have claimed all the way when the feminist attacks started on Lana and I have zero problems repeating it: they fear and disrespect a beautiful woman who is talented enough to make her own music and rises to stardom in a field that is more alternative than pop. This is their worst nightmare.

Well, it ended up being longer than I thought, but I don't have the nerve right now to post more.

Because Miley says "No, I'm not objectifying myself, I'm EXPRESSING myself!" and everybody screams "WHY DO YOU SUPRESS THE SEXUALITY OF THIS WOMAN! THIS IS LIKE IT SHOULD BE, WOMEON SHOULD BE ABLE TO EXPRESS THEIR SEXUALITY" if you critisize her for acting cheap in order to archive success. Rihanna acts tought while going back to the man who punched her into hospital, but everybody just cares for how iconic it is and how it's her busyiness. Lana on the other side is openly taking the submissive role, even though many times only in her lyrics, and is torn apart.

Just do it. Just do it - don't wait!

People never come for Rihanna, did you notice? I think is because she's bat shit crazy and doesn't take insults home so women like this hag kind of fear her.

Lana's comments on suicide were a huge turn off to me, I just can't with the things she says sometimes. But regarding Feminism, i can't with Feminists even more. In the western world, feminism and LBGT are nothing more than a distraction that separates society in small groups taking attention of the big picture that is civil rights and human rights.

What irritates me most about this is that people assume that these emotions are not real for Lana. Just because she's rich and beautiful, she can't be depressed or suffering from anxiety? I think she combines her own personal demons and past with an aesthetic she loves and this culminates into the narratives that her music embodies. It's easy to dismiss her as "just a persona," but a simple look at her music and work from ten years ago shows that this imagery and lyrical content remains consistent. There also seem to be several indications that she was quite a troubled teen. Most importantly, through her music, she gives a voice to oppressed women. I think Ultraviolence was more of a statement on the treatment of women by the industry and a reflection on the dark side of fame than a blanket comment on feminism. It was clearly written from personal experiences with a lot of sardonic tones. It's just very sad for me to witness a woman being perpetually torn down by critics and peers because of the way she chooses to express herself. Isn't that a direct contradiction of what feminism is all about?

Well, they do not come for Rihanna in the same way, since the feminist club is a 90% white women elitists one, so they care way less for black women in general  ;)

They do come for Miley and other female popstars also black females from time to time, but since they are pop and pop is trash anyway to them or simply not artistic and not their level of really deep thoughts, it's something they expect from them anyway.

The difference is also that Lana is not selling sex, not the pornographic kinda one, the tone is way more sensual and that's the point where that angers them, because sensuality goes much deeper than pure sex. They also can't write off the talent and the quality compared to pure pop.

Many views in feminism simply don't work for many women, at least when it comes from the sex negatives. I as a male, also don't care about their views on porn, s/m sex, etc. They pretty much doom sex, dominance or being sexual / sensual, but we are humans after all. When we see somebody who is attractive and comfortable enough to share sensual / sexual fantasies or sends signals, we react. And sex itself is never about equality really. You have fantasies, you want to be dominant or being dominated and that is something many of them refuse to accept.

It's cute she's basing her opinion of Lana as a whole off what, the Ride music video and a couple bad quotes? I'm sure it'll be tough on Lana considering who it's coming from though, especially considering how close Kim and Kurt were. I'm wondering if this has anything at all to do with the fact that Kim hates Courtney Love too and Lana happens to be doing a tour with her.

The more I think about this, the worse it looks for Kim. Unless it turns out that the guy Lana had her multi year relationship with was Thurston (KG's ex-husband and bandmate), it looks like an insanely personal and vindictive attack on someone she doesn't have any real connection to. IOW, the culmination of social media bullshit, put into print and given the imprimatur of a musical 'legend'.
