Ty, but it's all good now. That was turn of the 2000's (I'm old :crai:), they got divorced, shit got worse, shit got better, and I moved out and on my own. Personal philosophy is that the past was perfect - shit happens the way it happens because given the factors of life and universe at the time; there was no other way things could have gone.

If it didn't go that way, maybe I wouldn't be vibing here on Analboards. :smokes:

the lyrics were very good during Cry Baby era… she has great vision and interesting ideas (like the child-like metaphors) but needs cowritters to help her materialize that potencial. She seems very stubborn and want things her way, wich is great to an extent (is good to stand your ground and don’t let labels control you, but sometimes you have to hear exterior opinions to better the product). 
 

I also find quite unique the way she constructs melodies and her voice it’s really nice too… she has potencial for sure

that's good for you but I guess it matters if you care about the concept and critical acclaim kind of stuff. cause I think it's a cute album and for me it's nostalgic but i don't necessarily think it's good if you know what i mean, and it's so close to being good but there are just things holding melanie back, like her need to have a storyline for the album, which is what my comment about tag you're it and milk and cookies was about, not how good of songs they are.

I think if you care that much about not wanting storylines then Melanie will never please you. It seems like it’s what keeps her passionate about making music. I think the reincarnation story is a good middle ground to please both fans who still love Cry Baby and the ones who want to move on. It’s just her consciousness in another body and I doubt it will really make a big difference that it’s her “soul” but probably just something to make the huge change hit less harder for the long time fans. 

 

I’m personally fine with the storylines as long as she doesn’t restrict herself to such strict themes like she did with K-12. The Cry Baby story was fine because there was so much to work with.

Yeah exactly. I think she just has a niche audience for that stuff. Also she would also be able to create better music easier and quicker without restricting herself to storylines but I guess that’s just her passion.

right the lyrics were extremely solid on crybaby, great storytelling and lots of cleverness/creativity. almost every track was a standout. then things fell apart in k-12. i haven’t even listened to that album fully because her lyricism was weak, i was bored most of the time, and no song really stood out to me besides show & tell, strawberry shortcake, and maybe teacher’s pet.

 

portals will determine whether i’ll be a fan of melanie or not. i was obsessed with her when she debuted, but since then i’ve kinda grown out of the whole melanie martinez/marina and the diamonds/halsey early 2010s tumblr music, and i don’t care for those artists’ newer stuff. so we’ll see if her new album captures my attention. i like the snippets we got and love the strange-ethereal-fairy aesthetic, hopefully this album is a large step up from k-12.

This I agree, I don't think a true "storyline" really ever works in an album but loose ones can, which is a concept album lol. The thing is Melanie wants to make films accompanying her music which is where the storyline holds her back on K-12. Crybaby as a visual album worked because she wasn't necessarily trying to connect all of the videos together, it is more of a visual "theme" and again, a character study.

I cant believe im going to have to watch an hours long movie with this weird alien prosthetic. But i already know it will be a better experience that k-12. I think the music will be better too, but im still not expecting the songs to have standalone value like her first album did.

I love the idea of a storyline, and I think that for Crybaby it was so interesting and fun to watch unfold. I just think that if she wants to do another story-based album, she's going to have to let go of Crybaby.
