Lana Del Rey Born to Die Billboard Chart Immortality

Recommended Posts

Updated to include the Billboard 200 Album chart dated October 28, 2017

Born to Die now has 297 weeks on the chart

note this week that both Nirvanna (380 weeks) and Michael Jackson's Thriller (308 weeks) fell off the chart

Lana is our modern day Edith Piaf. Totally unique. a mixture of Brian WIlson Roy Orbison, Leonard Cohen, Gram Parsons, Elton & Bernie. Born to Die/Paradise is comparable to Elton's Captain Fantastic. All the records need to be listened whole. Waiting for a box set vinyl of all 400 songs not on any lp

I am not familiar with the Billboard system but can she enter it again?

If BTD sales and streams increase, she will. It's quite likely she will be charting again next week. She's been charting for almost 6 years and has only been out of the charts twice

Nirvana,  Guns'n'Roses,  Thriller and Lana. Pink Floyd's Dark Side, all are not on this weeks charts.

An album can reappear at any time the list is not consecutive for many of the albums.

This time of year many older albums dip or leave, then come back in a week, or few weeks.

BUT- this is important-

Billboard has changed the way the album chart will work (thanks to the basic cheating that went when two other artists attempted to keep Lust out of #1.

Now, under the new rules, free streaming on Spotify and other places will count less than if one has a subscription to it.

And as always, physical purchase of album in any form (cd, digital purchase on any of the places (ITunes, etc.), vinyl, tape, etc.) counts more than hitting play on free Spotify.

You tube will NOT count as of now.

One is not sure how that will turn out...

But again, remember 275 weeks is immortality...anything above it is gravy.

The thing about the charts in later October/Nov. is historically there are far more debuts this time of year than any other time.

So if one adds up (not going to do so) all the weeks on charts of all the Top 200, it is the smallest # of weeks over any other period

Which means the most new albums debut (having only 1 week or a couple, then quickly fall off the chart.)
So figure 50-75 albums on the 200 this week and the next few weeks, will no longer be on the charts later on (so that there will be 75 older albums returning to the 200 at

that point.

And that would be new regular albums, and new/returning Christmas albums that stop selling at Christmas time, and any Halloween LPs too.

Meanwhile Lust for Life is now the #1  Alternative Album by a Female Artist of chart year 2017.

Updated for the Nov. 11, 2017 chart

Notes of interest this week- the Beatles #1's falls off the chart (they have 295) weeks and directly behind Lana

and Nirvana also falls off, Thriller and AC/DC, and Zep are not on

and Lust for Life is still on the Top 200 in its 14th week.
Lana also reenters the Social Media list this week at #47, her 119th week on that chart (she got as high as #14).

Updated to include the Nov. 25, 2017 chart Born to die remains at 297 weeks.

this week only 9 of the Top 25 are on the chart

Last week 35 albums entered the charts (25 debut, 10 reentry)

This week 34 albums entered (18 debut, with 16 reentry, mostly Christmas or Christmas themed greatest hits)

There are  just 7 other albums on the 200 that have between 200-267 weeks on the chart.

@-  no not this week. There are now about 80 seasonal or other albums that will fall off the chart the start of the new year

at which time, one would assume it should reappear (along with the others on the list that have fallen off.)  Especially as her tour begins in

January.
