So, i finally listened to virgin last night. It was late at night and I was driving home back to the city from my family's house. There was hardly any lights on the interstate. I thought it was the perfect vibe, before it got super dark the sky was kinda lilac. I got lost in the music, and not in a good way. I really enjoyed pieces and ideas through out this record... but the execution... everything about it, it's trying so hard to capture lightning in a bottle for me. A lot of the themes are so recycled , and I get that's the point, but even from a song structure perspective its just wallow spit regret rinse repeat with a little Unh Unh before the hooks. And a majority of them sound the exact fucking same. They all sound like Man Of The Year. one of the only memorable songs from Lorde i can recall from the last two projects. And I would've enjoyed this song had it not been criminally short. The only songs I really think I remember today, and could ever see myself returning to listen to would be Current Affairs and David. These three songs were enjoyable. Current Affairs is ONTO something production wise. and David feels like it could be a catalogue STAPLE, But again- there was something so Olivia Rodrigthel Cain about it. I dare not even utter the lead single's name. And LITERALLY EVERY SONG TOO SHORT TO EVEN BLOSSOM...?!?! You know what I did after I heard this record? Thought to myself, damn... I wish we had not moved on from THIS so fast.... 4/10 .... but atleast it's not Solar Power (which clearly changed her music forever) Silver Moon clears this entire album

After sitting with this record for a second now… I just have to say it feels a little weak.? I’m really digging some of the melodies here, but a lot of what I’m hearing is soooo similar to stuff she’s already made. Like- almost been there done that… even down to the lyrics!! Is Anybody Out There = Fresh Laundry Seventh Floor = Regulars Down Season = June Gloom Happiness Is Gonna Get You = True Love Is Violent Learn To Cry = Learning In Public Stay Green = Rising Tide / Truly Dreams Its Just Light = Anchor like…. 😭 really praying for a deluxe, you can kinda see the exact moment of when making Mistress Violet sort of affected her approach to songwriting from there on. To me, it sounds like some revisited Demos from the last several years. Which is a shame because I thoroughly enjoy the aesthetics and directions of this era so far, again, I don’t see a problem with the particular artist she collaborated with for the out there visuals bc that particular artist is well known for creating original imagery and then using AI to play with their own work, not really much different than a big movie studio doing it for a marvel film. So not really getting the hysteria over that, especially since she probably commissioned that herself 😭 … anyways I would LUV LUV LUV to see a video for the title track and Learn To Cry and maybe even Uncle Lenny even though that would probably be the last song she’d make a video for. 6/10 HIGHLIGHTS : 1. Happiness Is Gonna Get You 2. Is Anybody Out There? 3. Uncle Lenny 4. Stay Green 5. Reunite == Learn To Cry everything else is rather forgettable tbh. final thoughts? Bring back Lo-fi/Vaporwave and spinning gifs queen I’m not really looking forward to a whole two years of this era.
