Lana inspiration...? Absolutely everything about her is Lana coded. She's tapped the index. She swallowed the glossary. One of her videos is every Lana era blended together and vomited out super ugly style.

I don't wish her ill will, but I don't wish her success. I wish her some actual artistic development. But then again, all the BTD-era fans have to feast on lukewarm scraps from somewhere. All the hype I see in her YouTube and Instagram comments makes my stomach churn. The reason why Lana's as big as she is, is because she created the *entire* artistic world this woman is playing dress up in. And they just eat it up. It's processed food. Then they ask "Why are cancer rates skyrocketing?". Because you're eating shit.

I'm left wondering if this girl has *one* original idea for her art? I'd love to see that. Just one. It feels like a cheap ploy for attention, and of course, it's working... A sucker is born every day.

some of my absolute favorite Lana songs are some that fans seem to find the most boring (Sweet, Bluebird - based on first impressions, The Grants, Not All Who Wander Are Lost, Dance Till We Die, Kintsugi, Honeymoon)....... idk why! i just love them. love love love.

I honestly think I prefer Solar Power to this and I thought that was a mixed bag...

Someone above me put it best when they described this as "skeletal" sounding. There's barely any meat here. It's so weird. It feels like a draft but not a fully realized album to me.

This captures my thoughts perfectly. Just as I start to settle into a song, it ends. Abruptly and unsatisfyingly.

The album feels skeletal. The framework is present, but there's little substance to hold it together. I’ll give it another listen tonight and focus more on the lyrics, but overall, it leaves me feeling pretty underwhelmed

I can’t help but wonder if the lukewarm reception to Solar Power stifled her desire to fully commit to a song/album/era

This is all a bit of a shrug, really. There aren't any standouts, but some tracks are significantly more interesting than others. The problem is that whenever she introduces a new sound (see: Hammer's industrial intro; the aggressive beat in GRWM and If She Could See Me Now; the sparse opening of Man Of The Year), she never fully commits to it, and the result is mostly half-baked and incomplete. None of these tracks reaches its full potential even when she attempts to make something slightly out of the box. It's frustrating. Most tracks also feel unnecessarily short.

Hammer has an intriguing intro and a great buildup before it falls apart during its rather empty chorus. The more mainstream tracks (What Was That, Favourite Daughter and Broken Glass) are pleasant but fairly ordinary and basic. The confessional Man Of The Year is gunning for an explosive climax, but the minimalism of its first section is far more resonant. Shapeshifter, while not a particularly great track on its own, is probably the highlight here, mostly because its brooding detours somehow manage to feel complete and well-rounded. The Fabiana Palladino tracks (Current Affairs; If She Could See Me Now) are highlights, too: intriguing deep cuts that seem to be heading somewhere. Clearblue is reminiscent of Imogen Heap, sure, but it never feels fully revelatory despite the frankness of its lyrics. David is a good closer - I really like the (short) electronic climax, but - once again - I kept thinking of a stronger, more experimental and unconventional version of it - of the entire album, really - , that Lorde's vision certainly implies, but never achieves. The mostly muffled production - clearly an artistic decision - doesn't help either. Every time a track gets interesting, it is immediately cut short. It all feels a bit rushed, a bit tame, and a bit lifeless. Many people drag Solar Power - yes, it certainly was a misfire on several levels -, but it definitely had far more personality than Virgin.

BEST TRACKS: Shapeshifter, Current Affairs, If She Could See Me Now

Currently listening- so far pretty good. Very weirdly produced, I think I said this about what was that but the production sounds like sky Ferreira cry baby demos. Mid 2000 pop demos vibes (the cry baby demos are my point of reference so idrk). Experimental influences defiantly there but derivative and doesn’t really work with her voice. Idk my opinion will defiantly change in like an hour. I lowkey get the jack antanoff hate and I’m happy lorde and Lana are doing something different but he is incredibly competent at what he does. Also dos anyone know the sample/who does the vocals on current affairs?

Was never a fan. But these "songs" - and I use the term very loosely - make me want to throw my Airpods max into the fire. What is going on with this woman, like, is she okay?

From her odd appearances and "fashion" choices like sellotape over her boobs, to her bizarre visuals and dreadful, barely two-minute earsores, Lorde seems to be on the precipice of a musical kamikaze.

i have low expectations for this album. these 3 songs sound like anyone could've made them and lorde’s energy for this release is just off-putting to me. like SO much passion n “weird-girl” energy/visuals for such basic songs.

Favorite song on the album. I still stand by my thought that the chorus sounds anthemic in a deconstructed Springsteen way - it takes me back to how he would form a song into something hopeful and resolute. The verses are full of character, the bridge is THAT bridge, the horns are gorgeous... Idk. I know this one's already being overlooked, but I think it's so important to the album.

You guys are forgetting Busy Woman was a Jack song. It’s still a new enough partnership that they’re putting out fresh sounds imo.
