I understand the frustration regarding the short length given that it’s been four years since Solar Power. But it won’t matter if the quality is there.

I don't agree with the theory that Penny Mason is a reference to the book The awakening. The character in the book named Penny Mason is never in a coma, and the book is low-brow mystery ghost story. There's nothing about the book that suggests Lizzy would have even read it, let alone be touched enough to mention a character in a song. 
 
There's another book that came out in early 2007 about a 13 year old Benny Mason who commits suicide by jumping off a bridge and drowning. This is way more thematically related to this song, but Benny Mason is never in a coma in the book. There is also no reason to believe Lana would have read or cared about this book, and the timeline seems to be off anyways. 
 
I would love to know who the real P/Benny Mason is but right now I don't think there is any way to know. Google/internet archive do not yield helpful results.
If we ever find out, I'd think it would be from some resurfaced Lizzy social media entry.
