More than twenty thousand people have been killed and tens of thousands injured after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck southern Turkey on 6 February 2023. Hours later a second earthquake struck nearby with a 7.5 magnitude, adding to the devastation as aftershocks continued. At least 23 million people and 4 million buildings were affected.  Freezing weather conditions are further endangering survivors and complicating rescue efforts.
