I’ve been revelling in it since and watched it twice, so far?

I love the shots that came from it, how beautiful of a film it is, and how it sorta just confuses a lot of people and youtube reviewers.

What are your takes on the movie? Plot, characters?

This movie was beautifully shot but honestly I didn’t really believe her and Chris Evan’s were in love? Like idk they kind of just expected the audience to believe they were true love because they had a relationship before the movie started but I didn’t get much chemistry and I don’t feel like they had that many scenes together at all.

So as a pro, I feel like as a casual film goer that doesn’t really know anything about Past Lives or A24 even, I really enjoyed how self aware it is, it can satirical, but it presents itself as something that can easily be relatable to a lot of people, especially if you’ve you’ve made your rounds with dating.

The plot is simple, the concepts about the movie are easy to understand. The casting fit well imo. Oh and the dialogue was interesting to say the least.

Altho beautifully shot, and those transition scenes and editing were well crafted, I think people won’t really get the movie from the getgo, myself included. But for me, that’s a good thing.

I do think people’ll expect more of like a straightforward kind of film, but it isn’t and it veers more so about the characters in the film a little bit more than just what’s happening. I like how meanings are shown thru implications in the film, rather than just it being said. I do think it has a theater quality to how it was made and produced, so maybe make of that as u will.

I love the dry humor that kinda slipped a lot over people’s heads. It’s set in new york and I’m not really from there, but it’s very real world based and showcases more the dynamics of relationships, parts that go into it and how it can or can’t be sustained.

I really like the topic of stripping everything away from what modern dating requires to be in love and what’s actually needed. And I do think it’s a good selling point in how none of this is really simply said, but shown thru implications. Like, because of this, if you’ve ever been in love, you’d understand how the movie moves.

for me, it’s a nice feel good movie, and I love the intellectualizations in it, how it made me feel, the overall mood of it. And, it’s just smartly made.

Some things are open ended, you might have actually pay attention for some things to make sense, and the sort of indecisive feel of it sometimes can either be a good thing for you, or annoy someone.

I thought some parts were just hilarious, but the humor’s a bit more dry and matter of fact, but the audiences I watched it with, it didn’t really resonate so.

I wanna say, non biasedly, it’s probably like, a 7.5/10, with how I anticipate how others might take it.

I personally really loved it, and loved it even more on second watch, so I wanna give it an 8.3/10 if it were me personally, just for me haha

I know that it’s good, the feels were right and realistic. I love how it opens discussion on what makes love easy, but makes dating hard. But I also understand that when it comes to more logical or cerebral people, it can be frustrating for them. But I don’t really think that that’s the point. I think the point is really about, the hoops we gotta go thru to be able to SUSTAIN and stay in something bc of love.

I would give it like a 6.5/10 I wasn’t like blown away but I think it had a tinnyyy bit of something most romance movies lack - I think it’s the directors influence she’s really good. It’s not even like it had great potential I just don’t think in the end all said and done the story wasn’t all that

I liked how simple it is, but if you pay closer attention, the answers are already there for the viewer.

it’s not really grandiose, it’s efficient, and subtle, and softly magical, but in a grounded sort of sense. It’s intelligent and self aware.

and I think it depends on the person’s maturity level when watching it and appreciating what the film does that many others in that field or genre don’t.

i enjoyed it so much! the front is loaded with humor with worked nicely and i went interesting/unexpected places in the middle. who she chose made sense to me– like, yea, ultimately love does have to be on the table (for me at least).

right?? I think it was either just clever or Dakota Johnson like humor, and I loved how things weren't really spelled out for us, but rather given subtle nods. and I think so too, that was probably a surprise about the movie cus thru-out it, she goes thru changes and it turns parallel to her work as well, and then at the end she's kinda earned or like, reached what her previous personhood wanted, but just bc she was being and working on herself. so, in that way, it was a lot more clear, and how the pieces fit.

I liked it! It definitely wasn't perfect, and if it wasn't for the gorgeous cinematography I'm not sure it would've won me over but it's not a bad film by any means. I do think the ending was a bit rushed and there weren't enough scenes with her and John. I am team John tho, surprisingly I didn't like Pedro in this movie! His performance was the one I enjoyed the least. Dakota isn't the best actor but there's a certain charm about her I find endearing. Past Lives made me cry, this didn't, but I'm still in love with Celine and I'm looking forward to whatever she'll do next. I think it's a decent 7 for me, I'll definitely revisit it.

Hmmm. I was thinking of making a blog post about this, or have another post on the random convo thread bc I didn't really wanna have the first page just be about me writing about it but. I guess irl, I'd probably not give so much of af so I'm just gonna keep gushing about this movie, and how I LOVE it so I think it's ok.

I. Never heard of Celine Song before, but because of this movie, might just watch Past Lives, because as some others mentioned, they thought she brought a lot of life to the film, and I'm no pro when it comes noticing these things cus I like feeling the overall feel so on but. I do appreciate how the scenes were shot, the frames in the film, and I know that a lot of people probably thought that the movie didn't really go anywhere or , the pace was a bit slow in filming and the plot, but I really loved it. I think that it added to the realism of the movie.

as for the plot, I think it was actually pretty straightforward. I understand how the movie started off with the pre-scene and then ties it back down thematically towards the end, but I thought it was really simple to kinda just have that effect of summarizing the main idea of the film. it was kinda quirky, and I like how even this part of the film was tied together back to the main story. the credits rolling scene, was also a nice touch, it endeared me to the movie further, cus it just made the concept of marriage this very joining and sondersome thing *SPOILER SKIP THIS SENTENCE IF U DON'T WANT IT TO BE SPOILED* but you have all these people getting married at this place coming and going, and I just really loved how it up'd the whole vibe of the moment for the main characters. *end spoiler*

From what I recall of how the scenes played out, it had me laughing about Dakota Johnson's delivery for the most chaotic parts of like, well dating, the requirements, her views on what her job's like as a matchmaker, and it's something that I love cus I feel like I'm sorta the same way when I spill my own lore or like poking fun in how I'll say something so out of pocket, but just be real calm about it in my delivery, so that had me laughing A LOT when it came to some things that just seemed so normalized but actually makes the point of more what people expect when it comes to dating and how they want their partner to be instead of knowing them more.

giphy.gifgiphy.gif

like good on paper, but do you really know them?
giphy.gifgiphy.gif

and I'd just laugh at some things cus she was perfect for this, and it really felt like a good fit cus her character's this internally calculating sort of person while she's still trying to figure out on her own what really matters to being in a relationship means and being in love. and at some point, she really does decide, after going thru changes and reflecting on what really matters to her when it comes to being in a relationship. she does kinda like, go back and forth to some extent, in a proper way between the two other characters tastefully and respectfully.

giphy.gifgiphy.gif

I feel like I can personally relate or at least always try to relate to characters in movies cus it's just nice to reflect and try to connect but I feel for all 3 of them.
When it comes to come, I relate with John cus I what it's like to work my ass off, and feel like I can't afford the kind of men I attract, I have to be shrewd and always on like Lucy when I do find guys that wanna spend time, and with Harry well wouldn't it be great to be born raised and still be rich- but I relate cus he seems like an outsider with someone who's already had a history with someone, or be like a second choice if at all. for me, this really makes the film, and I think that despite others sort of being half n half on the chemistry? I think even if it wasn't, it works for the film, because she's reluctant even after some major part of the film, she's trying to figure out if there's something there between her and the person she's wanting to be with. and the disappointment that gives *semi spoiler* divorced couple vibes is really made apparent at some point *end semi-spoiler* with their dynamic and it just fits. like it's kind of awkward naturally, but then you have those moments where you can really see that she's thinking about it, and the other character's just unwavering regardless.

It made me think of things that I accepted as love from situations before, and the first time I watched it, one character's confession kinda just hit really deep, and it made me cry, cus I've been in a situation where I did all that I could when it came to a first romantic situation, being that kind of vulnerable and being so eager to want and to feel so much that you wanted it to be it, and also, be on the other end of deciding whether or not you want this to continue, and it was really healing in a sense, bc it just reflects back the respect and effort that you put into something, and Hollywood or A24 sort of just validates how it might've been for you, and helps you release that moment that you might've holding onto for a long time. it came off as very sincere.

giphy.gifgiphy.gif

I'll admit I thought of something that I felt I did wrong, even if most came from a good place, things can just not align, and it just made me question things that might've meant more than what I thought I did, but not everyone gets to have that privilege that the movie might allude to, at least with people we at some point thought that there was a chance for so, take that as you will. that's life really, and I'll find someone that can carry the love that I wanna give and enjoy it, and treasure me and whatever I have to offer I just know it, but this movie does a really good job of validating the main characters wants in unexpected ways.

giphy.gifgiphy.gif

I truly love this film. maybe cus I myself like blending my use of mind and heart together, but it really satisfied and hit those spots of a feel good film that I can always come back to, a comfort film. It has dry humor, great actors that didn't really rely on ego or hugestarpower but still moved the movie along, excellent writing and beautiful shots editing that really makes you feel something more, tender moments, and I just love the overall subtlety that moves everything along. It's mature, intelligent, heartwarming, can be satirical but also very much realistic. it's not a blockbuster, but it's enchanting, soft, self-aware, smart and just wise even.

I appreciate this film so much.

I'm kinda reading the synopsis and can already tell it might be a bit heavier.. so I'm gonna have to tackle it with a bit of caution. I'll have to give it a go at some point though, cus I can also feel how summative it can be. and yeah I'm glad! probably gonna have to come back to this thread and just gush some more here n there yeah
