  20. He performed a three-year stint as a pianist in silent theaters Kabalevsky was a communist and wrote many patriotic songs When a resolution on the directions that Soviet music should take, Kabalevsky was originally on the list of named composers who were the most guilty of formalism; however, due to his connections, his name was removed. He was famous for his trying to connect the bridge/gap between children and music. He set up a pilot program of music education in twenty-five Soviet schools. Kabalevsky began writing music at age 18, at first mostly works for the piano. Kabalevsky's music often makes use of Russian folk melodies, and is heavily nationalistic and politically oriented. His straight forward lyrical style and a fluent technique allowed him to produce the kind of music that the Soviets preferred. Kabalevsky won the Stalin Prize three times. At first he did not have his own style, he absorbed his Moscow Conservatory teacher's style. His earliest training was in no way focused upon a musical career. Kabalevsky revealed musical talent early on - he wrote poems, drew and received piano lessons. His pieces for young children are very commonly used in piano lessons. Studied music despite his parents’ desire for him to study mathematics.
