    Halsey

I thought a Halsey track sounded kinda Lana-ish before Halsey even sang it or was even a thing. #HipsterAlert No seriously. Following my own advice to "Keep an Eye on the 'Industry Players'", I follow a lot of music industry accounts on Soundcloud, including one for TaP mgmt, Lana's manager Ben Mawson's company that manages Lana as well as OTTR, TIWMUG, and G&M co-writer Tim Larcombe. So a couple years ago a set labeled "Tim Larcombe" popped up on there which included two instrumental tracks labeled "BT I" and "BT II", "BT" presumably standing for "backing track", which sounded vaguely Lana-esque so I saved them in case they ended up being used on an album. (I'm not exactly sure when they appeared. This archive.org snapshot indicates they were uploaded in October 2012, but I'm not sure they were public that early. I saved them in September 2013, but I know I found them awhile before I got around to ripping them.) Anyway, fast forward to this morning when I was listening to Halsey in order to defend her detractors from a more educated position when I listened to "Strange Love" and experienced some major déjà vu. I recognized the backing track instantly as "BT I". Sure enough, Tim Larcombe is indeed the producer of "Strange Love": Listen to a copy of "BT I" (click on the Soundcloud link below it if the embedded stream doesn't work) that I uploaded as a private track in April 2014 to show to @@Monicker, who deemed it "pretty uninspired": I don't think Halsey is a complete ripoff of Lana; she's extremely derivative of her contemporaries in general, one of them being Lana. Her voice doesn't sound at all like Lana. Only a couple songs sound like Lana ripoffs ("New Americana" being the most blatant well-documented example). But she occupies a lyrical universe that overlaps a lot with Lana's. However, being a documented fan of Lana with a song title the same as one of Lana's with a backing track possibly even written for Lana by a producer that worked with Lana and has the same management as Lana... I know some of that's probably coincidence, but it's all just a little too much. And it's easy to imagine her going, "OMG, you worked with Lana? OMG, Can I work with you? OMG, you've got a backing track you wrote for Lana that she didn't use? OMG, can I use it? Great! I'll name it after one of her unreleased tracks!"

    Halsey

So I was listening to more of Halsey's songs in order to defend her detractors in status posts when I had a sudden sense of déjà vu and made an interesting connection to something that turned up years ago in my Lana sleuthing. I'll post about it soon, but to make proper sense of it I need to know a couple things that maybe some of you can help me with: 1. Have any "Badlands" instrumentals leaked? If so, could someone PM them to me? (And if not, but if someone has them, can you still PM them to me? I won't do anything with them, I'm only interested in them for comparison purposes, and can delete them when I'm done.) 2. Is there a complete and accurate list of co-writer/producer credits for "Badlands"? Wikipedia is definitely missing some information. 3. When was Halsey signed? 4. What is her relationship to TaP mgmt (Ben's company) and when did it start?
  3. Do you think Lana was influenced to write this song by the Beach Boys? "Surfin' USA" mentions Waimea Bay (and Del Mar) as does "Kona Coast" and the Brian Wilson-penned Jan and Dean title track for the film "Ride the Wild Surf" which was set in Waimea Bay. (Do any of you DIY footage sleuths know if she used any footage from the film in her videos?) #MonickerBait
  4. Literally the first thing I thought the first time I heard that lyric.
  5. Now that you mention it...
  6. I don't mean to come off selfish, but I want it all... namely IWantItAll.mp3
  7. Has there been any word on whether or not this will be released as a single?
  8. It's a good thing @@Monicker doesn't hang around anymore to hear you say that.
  9. I'm intrigued by the title "Freak". "Art Deco" sounds, well... a little too Lana. Good to see "Burnt Norton" is just an interlude, probably where she reads from the poem. I wonder if "Salvatore" will be related to "Backfire" in any way. Salvatore, you can def be my baby boo... And I can't help but chuckle at the title "24". A reference to the couple times in 2011 she and her team tried to claim she was two years younger? Or maybe it's some shit about Jack Bauer in keeping with my theory that her songs are "autobiographical" about herself... watching TV. And hey, maybe "Terrence Loves You" is about Terrence Howard. (He is kinda her type.) Lana's just been watching too much Empire!
  10. #BOWIE More Mmmm-ing? YES! Lana's been taking notes. But I still have no idea who the fuck Terrence is.
  11. Actually I know of a big Lana fan whose name is Terrance...
  12. What kind of prophecy... LOL. This whole episode just emphasizes the silliness of focusing too much on chart performance. If you like an artist and her music, does it really matter that much how many other people do, so long as she is able to continue making music?
  13. I was going to mention this earlier, but I think @@Valentino is spot on with his observations about Arthur Lynn and his influence on her (or possibly their mutual influence on each other). Because I'd seen all that stuff before and noticed all the same connections he outlined. But while I also think Steven Mertens is obviously quite significant, I'm skeptical that he's good for the record executive guy she claims she had a 7 year relationship with, as @@Valentino suggests.
  14. Yeah, I don't want to post any of my main e-mail addresses publicly either, so I set up a new one so you can contact me: evilentitymod@gmail.com. When you contact me, try to include some kind of information that basically only you and I would know, like a detail from an old PM or something, so I know it's you. It's just about a bunch of Lanalysis stuff.
  15. In the past I've pooh-poohed the idea of ARH possibly being about Arthur Lynn in favor of another ex with a Jewish last name who resembles Axl Rose. But it appears Arthur's real last name is Levine, also a Jewish surname, so the "Jewish maven" line could fit him as well.
  16. I tried to tell you guys... Taking advantage of someone's mistake is one thing, but let's not even joke about committing crimes, please.
  17. Hey @@TrailerParkDarling, I'd like to discuss something with you, but it won't let me PM you. I'd appreciate it if you could get in touch somehow. I'm @evilentity_ on Twitter or you can ask one of the other mods for my e-mail address. Thanks.
  18. inb4 HBTB video is just a deleted scene from "Bad Blood"
  19. 7/11 is such a Lana title: Though at least Lana plagiarized back with the whole film me at home and on my balcony thing in the HBTB video.
  20. Damn, that house is super close to the road. And it's totally not gonna survive rising sea levels, ha. It's really sandwiched between the road and the ocean. Reminds me of a hotel my wife and I stayed at on the coast near the border between France and Spain last year. On a related note, I think she'd really like my house. White walls, lots of windows with wood frames and wood railings, a bit minimalist. C'mon Lana, you know you want to do that private house party for LanaBoards regulars I always fantasize about. The gun in the guitar case is very Desperado. I got very excited for a minute about the idea of her playing a guitar until I realized that big fucking gun had to be in there. I love how she simultaneously indulges the voyeurism into her life while at the same time telling us she really just wants to blow us the fuck up. (And be left alone and get high by the beach.)
  21. This thread is intended to be ironic, right?
  22. OK, maybe not technically a Lana opinion, but now that the "Prisoner" collab has been confirmed I've got to get this off my chest: The Weeknd's current haircut is stupid. There. I said it.
  23. Did anyone screencap the Amazon Germany tracklist when it first appeared? That Pitchfork piece was worded really weirdly. As if they were trying to lead people into thinking that the Lana collab was incorrect without actually saying that. All they actually said was "this tracklist is not correct". I'm curious to compare what Amazon Germany had up earlier with what The Weeknd just posted.
