@- that is playing the game the others are playing. The music stands alone. She doesn't need to do anything, the music stands alone. As for the videos, both Shades of Cool and West Coast were great videos showcasing the songs and continuing the story from prior videos. Ultraviolence was indeed a very stylized video, though it was not what some were expecting or wanting, which is what makes them Lana's. Never doing what is expected. Name one other person that got a debut #1 album without doing one bit of USA tv or publicity. Sam Smith did everything and anything and sold his soul, and he did and still never has reached #1 in America, and his music is a direct copy of Lana's. Her 2 songs that were specifically directed to the critics and rebuttals from other artists say it all - both I f'ed my way to the top and Money/Power/Glory. Put Lana back in 1969 and she would have already had 10 number one singles and 3 number one albums. There really is no female artist in the USA that has become number one in history doing it her own way. None at all. If she was a male artist in what is a male world, she would be lauded for everything she has done (much like Prince, for instance). Yes, all time artists are important, because what Lana is doing has not been done before. Sure some may want this, or some may want that, but that is what others want, and not what she wants. Diva? I don't think Lana knows what the word is. She just is in a different linear place than others are. Much like Leonard Cohen. Tell me the last time Leonard Cohen did a publicity tour in the US that included the late night or early morning tv shows. I also don't recall Leonard doing that back in the 1960s either. (edit as it clicked in duplicate) to add- in just 2 weeks, there should be 200 new versions of every single night of the tour available on youtube for all of us to watch. Seems like each night is always filmed and posted. And though I expect 85% of the songs to be the same as in prior tours as most people in the US have not seen her in concert, and would be disappointed if say, Video Games or Ride or Summertime Saddness is not done, a few different songs should be added. I look forward to seeing each nights performances on youtube, along with the shows I am going to (3 definite so far, possibly more if I can get the time off). -

I don't know why people want Lana to be Taylor Swift, when Taylor Swift herself would love to be Lana (as would Lorde, as would Sam Smith or anyone who copies her, and becomes more for the day bigger than her, but where will Sam Smith be 5 years from now? Probably forgotten along with Lorde and all the copies. Taylor Swift wants to be the most commercial of artists, but that means little artistically. People hear nothing from the legends in between albums/shows- and by legends not talking 2015, talking throughout history Dylan, Jerry Garcia, Paul Simon- no gossip, no press releases, they release something, or do a show and people see that, nothing more or less. One never hears much about Bruce Springsteen in between long, long spans. How much did one ever hear from Roy Orbison? Comparing Lana to a female artist? Why? Compare her to the biggest artists which is more what she is going for than Rihanna or Taylor or Iggy or Miley or Lindsay Lohan people looking for 24/7/365 media I myself would rather be able to walk alone on a street, or go into a café or restaurant without being chased all over town. Sort of an anti-star, instead of the flavor of the minute. The sort of thing that gets remembered 25 years from now. As for tv in USA? After the shit she went through, why bother? Thankfully NBC Brian Williams got his ass handed to him, karma came back and kicked his rear end but good. After what he did to Lana, glad it happened. And Lana did great on SNL, in fact, so great that Sam Smith copied the entire style on SNL, yet he was beloved. Why? As for Life is Beautiful- obviously the Adeline people wanted the trailer, perhaps due to Honeymoon being released, the record company doesn't want competing sales. So they nixed soundtrack. As for the supposed missed publicity in Europe? Perhaps that was never definite, or they forgot to pay Lana for the plane ticket over. Perhaps it was just rumors. As for Ultraviolence, one of the greatest full lps in history, one song better than the next, listened to fully as an album (not meant for singles, much like Elton John's Capt. Fantastic or Goodbye Yellowbrick Road.). Which is a throwback to the 60-70s also, to listen to a full album. -

People are amazingly shortsighted. Lana has 300 songs all available to us in one form or another and while there might be a little more control over leaks now, there have been at least 3 new songs so far this year, the promise of a brand new album, many tour dates, almost all of which will have clips taken and be available for us to watch new life performances of her songs Think of artists, like, say Adele- what does she have 2 albums? 20 songs maybe 30 total songs and zippo, nothing at all. no gossip, no nothing. Kate Bush disappears for years and years Joni Mitchell (wishing her the best in her hours of need) basically retired years ago And Lana is not trying to be in the news 24/7/365 or needing to be the star of the moment, when she is going to be the star of the 2000s, and thought of like Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson or Paul Simon or the Beatles or the Dead. (note- all those are MALE artists in a male recording business...Lana is doing it HER WAY which is just about unheard of for a female star, who is not mass produced like say Diana Ross was or in her early years, or Petula Clark or even Mama Cass singing songs of John Phillips. (Same with all the others). Me, I am grateful for new songs when they appear, and figure Honeymoon will be released as they do nowadays, instantly and most likely in a week nothing else will, so it can debut at #1. Sorry if this offends anyone. -

do you realize off the cuff comments like this could come back and haunt during voting for Oscars? Where negativity is played up? Are comments like this the reason Lana did not get nominated the last 2 years? Really, if one is a fan on a lana board, one should have some consideration and not just blah blah blah some info that really, should be kept unsaid. Because Oscar has specific rules. I can Fly wasn't used for the Oscars so it didn't matter. And Once upon a Dream wasn't original and it has to be original version not remake when a remake movie is made to qualify (though Oscars should change their rules like screenplay and have two- best original and best adapted for film) edit to add- there was suppose to be a quote of a post above, but it did not show up, my comments were based on a response on the last page) -

I agree, and in fact, I don't understand why people on this specific board should be negative about anything at all. Negativity kills. And day after day, like in comments from day one about Lana anywhere, someone has to come around and post something negative. Is it really so hard to be positive? And how would those know what a full song that could be 4 minutes long sound like with just 1 minute worth of song? I myself like what I hear and anytime there is a day with a new song, it's a great day in my opinion. and if this is not on Honeymoon, then hopefully will be stand-alone on ITunes. One day we all are going to get some really great unreleased box sets with the 300 (and by that time so many more) or so not on album songs Lana has done in her life. Just like Dylan and the Dead and Springstreen -

Lana's Contribution Cut From Brian Wilson's Upcoming Album
graham4anything replied to Sitar's topic in Latest News
So Don Was, the producer now says her version is recorded. Look for it to leak at some point and then look for the two of them to duet at an award show later on. The song if one heard it really is about him and the Beach Boys and their lawsuits and breakups and his getting older. Was is correct, that Lana singing it gives it a different meaning altogether. But now I can't wait to hear her version. Any cover she does she does better than the original. (That Kasabian song comes to mind and one day would love to hear Lana and Leonard Cohen actually sing together). Now to decide if I should drive to Florida for the last date on the US tour. (Washington, NYC, Boston, NJ not enough) -
I got tickets to Boston yesterday, today NJ appears to be sold out. (But the Atlantic city place is small, especially taking out the VIP seating from regular buyers.) It really matters little when there is a pit area, because one needs to be in the pit, and the pit has been full in every single show last year.

Lana's Contribution Cut From Brian Wilson's Upcoming Album
graham4anything replied to Sitar's topic in Latest News
I heard Brian sing it on Jimmy Kimmel (saw the youtube of the show). Personal lyrics only make sense to Brian. Totally out of context for someone else to sing this song as it is a specific and nasty reference at that to the other living members of the Beach Boys who Brian perceives to have screwed him for money. (Mike Love owns the rights to the touring as the Beach Boys name, and when they reunited last, Brian was fired by Mike and Mike said he was only a hired hand. Imagine that. One day it would be nice for the two to duet on a more appropriate song. Lana is a big fan of the Beach Boys, and the Beach Boys evoke a positive mind frame. This song is a slow, sad negative bitter song. -
Lana's Contribution Cut From Brian Wilson's Upcoming Album
graham4anything replied to Sitar's topic in Latest News
Having read an article today, and just hearing Brian sing Last Song on Jimmy Kimmel- this song is most certainly not a song anyone but Brian should sing. It is a bitter, anti-Mike Love (Beach Boy) song about the breakup of the Beach Boys and in that reference, it actually is anti-Beach Boy (though Wilson IS the Beach Boys. They never would have been anything without Brian. So perhaps indeed Lana did not see a reason for this song- ALSO- now it makes sense the Bob Dylan clip. That was exactly what this Brian Wilson song is saying. So it was Lana's cryptic response to Brian Wilson insinuating something. It was about Brian, not about her. Just more Lana negativity by the press and others in the industry. Perhaps James Franco is correct too- Brian namedropped her to get her fans to buy his new album, knowing full well all this time she would not be on it. Just another in a long line of artists that name drop Lana for their own good (until like Sam Smith or Lorde, they forget how much they owe Lana). -
brand new show added. Got my tix this morning.

No, and I was about to post something like this on a different thread, the Honeymoon thread-(and I was a really big Kate fan when she first arrived, was in the audience at SNL but never got a chance to see her in concert here in USA, and considered going to UK recently, but not after I read what songs she would be singing. When the reviews of the first performance came in, I was no longer really interested in the time and expense to pick up a ticket(which I could have gotten just to hear those songs as she eliminated most of her early work). (It would be like Lana not doing BTD/Paradise or Ultraviolence). anyhow- Kate Bush was taken by David Gilmour and basically he tutored her and spent years on her concept prior to her releases. Kate already had the Pink Floyd lineage and fan base prior to her release. More important, Kate had the press on her side, due to that connection. Plus she almost never toured and released very few records before disappearing for years on end. And Kate had zero success in America besides cult star. Her biggest US charter only reached #30, and her biggest lp in the US "Red Shoes" did not make the top 25. (Her last album didn't even chart in the US top 200). I personally believe Kate came back now because of among others, Lana, to reclaim her space. Though Kate in concert was a production, not a singer singing their songs. Personally I go to Broadway to see a production, and concerts to hear a singer sing their songs. I find the production parts to be a distraction. (Same with costume changes and long band solos while the singer leaves the stage). If one is talking quantiy/and quality, Elton John and Dylan are the more apt comparisons, though to be compared to Kate Bush ain't bad itself.

OMG- I just realized to add to my post above- Falling in Love again was done in a cover version by NINA SIMONE a few decades after Dietrich did her version. could there be 2 Nina songs on Honeymoon? -
Honeymoon - Pre-Release and Discussion Thread
graham4anything replied to ilovetati's topic in Retired Pre-Release Threads
Assuming the above is somewhat real I wonder- is the title- Falling in love again- Is this the Marlene Dietrich track from the movie "The Blue Angel" (the German lyrics are far more sultry than the American) As I consider Lana the equal to a modern day Edith Piaf,(the Little Sparrow), doing a Dietrich track would be perfect. Not to mention- it would be a wicked inside joke, being that Gods and Monsters done by Elsa (Jessica Lange as Elsa) on AHS was done in the exact voice of Dietrich That would be great. the Beatles among many others later recorded it. (so it also ties in w/the remarks about Lucy in the sky). -
BTD Makes Complex's "Best Debut Albums" List
graham4anything replied to PARADIXO's topic in Latest News
Cool. It is her first major national release the public heard about. only thing I can't figure out and it depends on the day of the week, is how to rank BTD, Paradise and Ultraviolence. They are all in my Top 10 albums of all time (I consider Paradise great enough to say it is an album especially as I consider all 3 to be concept albums and one long road trip From the east to the west. Would love the older stuff one day in a large box set with everything ever written even if demo's. At least most are on youtube. As far as this list about debut albums I would rank BTD as #1. A fully conceived project with not a bad song on it. -
Honeymoon - Pre-Release and Discussion Thread
graham4anything replied to ilovetati's topic in Retired Pre-Release Threads
Don't forget 2 things- shortly the industry is shifting to a universal Friday release date and the billboard charts will also change the days the first weeks charts cover Also- artists now are dropping surprises, and one has to take into account, like movies do, that release dates are important in securing a #1 album. So the album may be surprise released without much advance or any advance As they say, Sam Smith who basically copied Lana, made a huge mistake releasing his debut the same day as Lana and only debuted at #2. Sam did not reached #1 in the US. And Billboard was predicting Sam would get to #1after the Grammy's, and guess what? Drake surprised and Sam will have to be happy with a #2 BTW-didn't it irritate some here that Lana did SNL, and she was crucified for just standing by piano and singing Sam does SNL, basically imitates Lana standing at the piano, holding the microphone stand and he is loved? The disconnect is amazing. -

Shades of Blue and West Coast are 1969 so I suspect there is actually going to be parts of all her prior albums blended together into something new and interesting, and I hope like the others, there is a concept album in them Sort of a mesh of Shades of Blue with Young and Beautiful and Pretty when I cry mixed into one Hopefully there will be that 60s/70s reverb -
Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth criticizes Lana in memoir
graham4anything replied to Deleted User's topic in Latest News
OK after a few more days and some new bad talk from Kim, I am now convinced- Kim herself is the protagonist in the song "Old Money" but in her case, Kim is looking back at a time she remembers when she had it all, she thought, but it all went bad. Kim had success on a cult level, her band one of the most critically acclaimed in history. And she had a happy family life. Now, she is moaning that she would run run run if it came calling again, and in Lana, Kim sees herself and is jealous that Lana now has it all, and Kim lost it by becoming bitter and not moving forward. If Kim were AUTHENTIC in her thoughts, she would mentor Lana to be what ever it is she claims is "inauthentic". And show her the ropes...could it be that Kim and kim's humor meant Kim and Sonic Youth were just pulling one over on everybody? Ask yourself- why is she bullying Lana, yet never mentions any of the 30 other talented female out there that are all the same in the last 30 years- from Mariah to Celine to Whitney to all of those that sound the same and one can't recall who sings what. Yes all of those singers are talented, but none are unique. They are each other, all pining to be the next the last was, up to and including today's Miley, today's Rihanna, Beyoncé, etc. Why do people never question the "authenticity" of any other female singer, NOR at any time any male singer or band? Sheesh, it seems the term was invented specifically by the haters of Lana and just a bullying word. Lana is unique. Kim was unique. The thing too is, Lana though not trying for hits, has had more hits than Sonic Youth did. It seems Kim though feels no one loves her now that she is not "young and beautiful". I guarantee people will love Lana when Lana is 61. And Lana won't need a book to get publicity off of, as Lana will still be producing movies, music, tv, and whatever is in 30-35 years the current media like a Paul McCartney or Brian Wilson or Aretha Franklin who don't look back, but keep moving forward. Invite Kim to a concert and do a duet. -
Lana Song You're Currently Obsessed With
graham4anything replied to LifeisBeautiful's topic in Lana Thoughts
American my favorite song from Paradise and Born to die plus the entire Ultraviolence cd...every song is meant to be listened to as one. From song 1 through . The entire cd tells a story that one song does not complete. The most thoroughly satisfying concept album I have ever heard. An album that will only get more popular in time. Especially come 2020...when the Top 100 albums of the decade 2010-2019 come out. I predict it will be in the Top 5. (and I predict there will be no haters remaining by then). -
Lana should put this song on Honeymoon. Seems to fit with what she has talked about for the new album.
-
Just in case I wasn't clear- I meant the character on the show named Lana I think was named after Lana Del Rey. She looked just like her, Ryan Murphy seems to idolize Lana Last year Ryan specifically went out of his way to mention Lana's Gods and Monsters was going to be sung by Elsa. Lana would be perfect as a guest in the new season (though I doubt they would put both Lana and Gaga on the same season) using the Old Money song, perhaps with a ghostly Lana on one of the top floors gazing out the window in a dream like sequence but actually, I am hoping for something with Lynch in the new Twin Peaks in 2016

Honeymoon - Pre-Release and Discussion Thread
graham4anything replied to ilovetati's topic in Retired Pre-Release Threads
One thing about "Don't let me be misunderstood"- There were at least three major versions of the song over the years Nina Simone had the original. But there were two other major hits with it- The rock version by the Animals in the 1960s, and the dance version in the late 1970s by Santa Esmeralda. So this is a song that could be made for many different formats. -
This should be fun to watch. Love the Murphy named the character Lana in Season2 Asylum after Lana and basically for all intents and purposes "Lana" was played by Lana who looked like her anyhow. And then in Freak Show Elsa sang Gods and Monsters Do hope that Gaga does more than Stevie Nicks Hope it is an actual acting role.
-
I think some day the older works will be in normal lp format, there probably is some rights issue and maybe Interscope don't want it out now. But I don't find Ultraviolence to be a major difference than Born to die and Paradise. I think Ultraviolence more plays up 1969 (and yet the Nino Rota reference in Old Money, from 1969's theme from Romeo and Juliet) was done many years ago in the demo Lana long ago recorded. Joni Mitchell is a good example, hadn't thought of her in writing the other posts. Also, Harry Chapin, whom I was a major fan and saw dozens of times. Harry just sat and sang, and critics also roasted Harry, yet Harry was also for the underdog, the person down on their luck, the oddballs. Harry was unique. It might be interesting if Lana were to champion Harry Chapin and possibly use her influence to get him in the Hall of Fame. Also, at some point, Lana finding a cause/charity like Harry did (and Harry was the next in line after the 1950s/1960s folk singers, which in a sense, Lana is a folk singer, in that like Harry, like Pete Seeger, it was always a sing-along concert. One listen to any concert tape, and the entire audience is singing with her. Communal style. Like the fests in the old days. Harry never got the credit, but he got people like Bruce Springsteen and other newer artists at that time into doing charity work, and they have passed it down to more recent artists. Lana could do the same. Though she doesn't want to be a role model, she could with a good cause, harness it (without selling out, without changing one bit that makes her what she is.) But great point on Joni Mitchell. Imagine if somehow the two could do something together. Though Joni is basically retired from music now. Interesting to think about. edit to add 2/26- I looked up Joni's American chart stats- though it really is kind of silly to compare chart stats, but why not- Lana has a #1 and #2 and #8 Joni has a #2 lp singles- Joni reached #7 Lana #6 but again it's silly. Joni is a legend both singing and songwriting, and Joni is like Lana unique. Which is a compliment to compare Lana too Joni. I do think as the years go on, more people will cover Lana's songs. (note- this was edited)
