  1. Finally wrapped up my first listen of the album. There's no better day than one when I am listening to 13 Lana Del Rey songs for the first time! Refusing to listen to anything else after Coachella came out certainly pays off today.

Overall an excellent album, very pleased. There's something good, if not great about every song. That said, the album has one major flaw to me, the collaborations. I don't buy a Lana Del Rey album to hear other people sing. While its offset by the album having so many songs on it, and frankly, they're not all that bad (Lust for Life and Beautiful People Beautiful Problems in particular), said songs could have been just so much better to me if she did all the singing herself. Summer Bummer and Tomorrow Never Came in particular are quite disappointing with just how much her collaborator sings on them. Very large portions of the song.

Anyway, I won't let that ruin things for me, because at least the parts of those songs where she's singing is fine, and this might be the first album since Born to Die where there is no total dud. But it will certainly take more listens to fully get into things and determine how I'd rank the songs and the album as a whole against her other work.

  2. She clearly has been inspired in part by Lynch (the Blue Velvet cover being probably the most blatant), nothing would make me happier than to see Lynch use a song of hers in the show (although I know the odds are quite slim :()

  3. IMO there are many fillers and bad things about the era

Not IMHO if we're talking about the 15 tracks on BTD. Not a single song there I dislike or would commonly skip over as I do on her other albums. Paradise had a couple of duds (Yayo, which is my least favorite officially released LDR song of all time) and Burning Desire. But I don't view BTD itself as having any filler or bad songs.

  4. Have listened through the whole album once, a few songs I have listened to a couple of more times.

Overall I find it better than UV, not as good as BTD. The album seems like a good mix of the two, leaning more heavily towards UV, at least in terms of the musical style (I don't know the lyrics well enough to comment on that).

Music to Watch Boys To and Terrence Loves You are the 2 highlights for me so far, I'll have some stronger thoughts after I listen to the rest of the album. Third straight album from her (Paradise, UV and this) where the second song on the album is the best one.

God Knows I Tried and Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, and surprisingly enough the title track are those on the bottom for me. The title tracks for both BTD and UV were excellent songs (my fave of the album for the latter) but just not that into it this time. She's done rather "eh" covers on the last 2 album and my hope is she gives it up for the next one.

Anyway, initial impression was it was worth the wait and hoping it is very successful.

Probably a little too hard on the title track here although its still towards the bottom of the album for me

    Top Tier

    Music to Watch Boys To

    Terrence Loves You

    Art Deco

    The Blackest Day

    Swan Song

    Salvatore

    Mid Tier

    Freak

    High by the Beach

    Religion

    Bottom Tier

    God Knows I Tried

    Honeymoon

    24

    Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood

Honeymoon and 24 both come off as songs that could be Bond songs to me (at least musically, lyrics would probably need to be adjusted), showing just how bad a decision it was to not go with her for the new movie! :P

  6. Anyone else STILL waiting for the box set (from LDR.com)? I am. The wait is excruciating! Especially since I've held off on listening to everything sans West Coast and the 2 bonus tracks which won't be on it anyway. I'll lose my mind if I don't get it this week. :P

  7. I just listened the snippets once and that's it. Nothing more until the release. I don't even know how I feel about the songs, I'm gonna only judge it when I have UV in full.

Same for me. I've held off on listening to Shades of Cool, Ultraviolence and Brooklyn Baby outside of about a 10-15 second snippet for each. I take it that those and WC were the songs they left out? Since it was clearly under 14 songs (I think around 10 or so?) No more listens until the album comes out.

I loved the sound of BTD & Paradise and it definately sounds different from that. I'll wait to the album for a full opinion. Not that 1 listen is enough anyway. Was very disappointed with West Coast on the first listen but its since grown on me quite a bit.

  8. I'm so afraid she's going to quit music after the Ultraviolence era. I have yet to see her in person and she has the best music rn imo. She can't quit. :(

How many times has she said she was going to quit music, to not do so? It's like a broken record at this point and if you believe it, you're being foolish. She was gonna quit after BTD, she was gonna quit after Black Beauty leaked, on and on and on and on.

She'd be a fool to do it, and she's not going to do it. Especially when she's viewed in a more positive light now. If there was a time where she was really going to quit, it would have been after the SNL appearance.

  9. 1. How did you discover Lana? When and What Era?

I saw a reference to "Video Games' being one of the best songs of 2011 in a December 2011 issue of Entertainment Weekly and checked out the song.

    2. First song(s)?

    Video Games

    3.what did you think?

I thought the song was better than average, and it was enough to get me to listen several times and caught on to Blue Jeans and Born to Die shortly afterwards. Although I didn't get super obsessed until I got the BtD album

    4. Your favourite song(s)?

    American is #1

Also great are Born to Die, Dark Paradise, Radio, Carmen, Summertime Sadness, Without You, Lolita, Ride, Gods and Monsters, Bel Air and Young & Beautiful.

Among non-official songs, favorite are Angels Forever Forever Angels, Damn You, Queen of Disaster, Hollywood, Starry Eyed, Prom Song and Serial Killer

    5. Least favourite song(s)?

Burning Desire and Yayo are her only bad songs, among her official stuff.

    6. What song(s) "grew" on you?

    West Coast

    7. Whats your favourite Lana era as of now? (May jailer, Lizzy Grant, Lana Del Rey)

    Lana Del Rey

    8. Favourite Album(s)?

    Born to Die

    9. Least favourite(s) ?

Not much of a fan of the May Jailer or Lizzy Grant era from what I've heard.

    10. Favourite song preformed live?

    No favorite.

    11. First song/Album purchased/Downloaded?

    Born to Die album

    12. Favourite song quote/lyric?

Nothing in particular. I've always preferred the vocal performance and the music to the lyrics.

  10. Why to bother ordering online?

Can't wait to buy my version (whatever it will be) at a REAL music store.

I ordered online once and got my album 1 week after the official release date - CRUEL WORLD - I was so pissed, I can tell you. Never again!

With Paradise I ordered the box set and it took like 3-4 weeks at least to arrive after the release date (and after I received notification that it was shipped?). 1 week is nothing! :P Although I preordered the box set again this time.
