At 27 years old, the singer Del Rey does the promotion of her last album "Ultraviolence" and starts with "Next". Meeting, in Los Angeles, with a young woman deciphering the lighting speed of its success, lending herself to pose, ultrasoft.

 

On Beverly Hills's hill where we meet, in the house of the businessman multimillionaire James Goldstein, built in the 60s, there is a big blue sky, treacherous wind, fantastic view. Lana del Rey has goose flesh when she appears at the end of a long glass corridor, in pair of jean shorts in and T-shirt.

 

She's thin with forms, still has long auburn hair, a milky skin, a shy and polite look, and fake lashes already put on eyes which we feel are observing us. Her extravagance is Johnny, her stylist, an emphatic Englishman in red bandana shirt with which she is inseparable since her beginnings, before Lizzy Grant, her real name, became Lana Del Rey.

 

The clothes of the photography session spread out everywhere on the furniture of the owner, absent this day. She never had the opportunity to meet James Goldstein. The unpredictable septuagenarian is known for his love never satisfied with fashion shows and basketball matches. The man built his brand image with python cowboy hats, proof of a lack of obvious interest for the animal cause.

 

Vintage

At 27 years old, Lana Del Rey, musical blockbuster, seems to have grown tired of her pin-up years, doe eyes of doll taken out of the 50s look. This poisonous ultra-feminine seen in particular on her covers, had been described many times as extravagantly marketed. It's revoked, at least for the time of this April  Wednesday.

 

For this first cover of a long promotion to come [LMFAOOOOOO], she doesn't want to look too much dressed up and now poses with her own wardrobe and of local vintage, sixties-seventies eras, more Janis Joplin than Patti Smith. This morning, it will be poncho with fringes, embroidered white dresses, pale pink kimono with flowers, leather pants. "I often saw photos of me which made me uncomfortable. It was too much. But the media wanted that", she defends itself, crossing long fake red nails.

 

Cigarette in hand and iPhone connected on a reggae playlist, she says to prefer working with a faithful team. And surprised herself to confide the production of Ultraviolence, her new album which is planned out in June, to a "unknown": the very popular Dan Auerbach, leader of the Black Keys. "I met him in a strip club in Queens. They played one of my tracks, we danced together. One week later, I went recording at his home in Nashville. Dan is a mule, a dominant who likes that his ideas are being tested first. Generally, it corresponded exactly to what I wanted." They were apparently dividing the power without too many complications. "Am I dominant? Yes but only at work."

 

She has a way of speaking that reminds you of Marilyn, whom she actually mimicked in a blond wig in Kill Kill, one of her famous home-made clips with done with what was at hand (Final Cut and Photo Booth). She looks for her words, takes her time, interrupts the discussion with big roars of laughter that  go into trebles. That could be thought of as simpering. It's a mixture of shyness, fear, and quietness. Quiet as the atmosphere of this immense house, architectural eccentricity where were shot The Big Lebowski and some old Funny Ladies. 

 

Places don't know the rumours of the City Of Angels, safe on these heights for billionaires where the neighbours are called Sandra Bullock and Rupert Murdoch. There are many works in progress, an exclusive club with dance floor under construction under a tennis court. Luxury doesn't likes limits. Everything here is made of concrete, wood, steel and immense windows that throw you in a luxuriant and tropical garden. Lana Del Rey almost can't do anything about it, she vamps even nature in Mathieu Caesar's objective

 

References

Three years after the media tidal wave which followed her appearance on the pop scene, we were wondering how the young woman would embrace the next wave. Following the example of her look, it will be change in continuity because the time of revolution has no reason to be. Born To Die's hip-hop beats, its strings and its omnipresent violins gave way to the guitars, to the rock and to the light swings of jazz of Ultraviolence. The title of this second record and that of her favourite track (Cruel World) play with the media love-hatred which she fed. "I do not make reference to that, she denies without us managing to believe her. In Ultraviolence, there is an idea of the masculine which meets the feminine. But before the meaning, I just like the word. It became the frame of a sound world I wanted to create. "

 

She sings there her desire of opening, "to enjoy life" and "to become wild again" with the fear of not reaching it. "I write thinking of the freedom I had when I was 17, about the life I dream of. There are more barriers around me, because there also are more and more people. My influences, it's the music which I listen to and the movies which I look at. " She quotes Jeff Buckley, Nirvana, Nina Simone, worships the cinema of Kubrick, Tarantino and Lynch, Sailor and Lula version. We show her extracts of Blow-Up by Antonioni, Tarnation by Jonathan Caouette, Kustom Kar Kommandos by Kenneth Anger whom she doesn't know. 

 

She recalls a scene from "Last Year In Marienbad" of Alain Resnais, when Delphine Seyrig moves forward in a veil dress in the corridors of an austere and disturbing castle. "This kind of plan inspires" me, she slides. Johnny makes her laugh, takes care of relaxing the atmosphere if it was needed. Her "amaaazing", and other "I loooove your styles" go perfectly with the hollywoodo-Balinese decor where we spend the day.

 

A cigarette in mouth, Lana Del Rey observes the view and turns back to an internal pond filled with pearly orange and white Chinese carps. Not far, a cream Rolls Royce patients in the garage, just a step away from a Xavier Veilhan sculpture. "I pose in this magnificent place, I answer interviews, but on the side I live in a very real world. I am a solitary person. Here, everything revolves around me but at home everything revolves around my younger brother, my younger sister and James, my fiancé. " The Scottish musician Barrie-James O' Neill, her partner, will play in first part of her tour which will take her to the United States, in Europe and necessarily in France where she sold 460 000 albums. The producer Harvey Weinstein invited her to perform in the charity gala of Amfar during the next Cannes film festival. She will thus be on Croisette. 

 

Tumblr generation

Lana Del Rey gets ready in Los Angeles where she settled down after growing up in Lake Placid, no fuss town in the North of the state of New York, in a very middle class family. She is the elder daughter of her siblings which makes her "motherly". Some said her father rich, he is a real estate agent. "Some claimed that he had bought my contract. But labels don't need wallets, they want artists. These attacks were below the belt", she complains.

 

Her initiation to  music arose late in life, at about 17. She then wanted to only wanted to do this and dedicated herself to the creation of an album which was never born in spite of the promises of a record company. Unknown singer during seven years, she squatted Brooklyn and its bars. She is used to confide that she had drinking problems and that she came back from it. Girl of the "tumblr-mood boards" generation, she mixed without complex, in her first clips, VHS imagery, super-8 retro, her reflection filmed with her computer and the finds that offers the time-consuming net.

 

With Video Games, appearing summer 2011, she had passed in one August month of trendy discovery to mainstream and its sirens. We see appearing in this video, all that the young people of her age like: archives of holidays in band, teenage loves, cartoons, skateboarders, and her, sulky.

 

Her voice, devourer of space, had marked the spirits in 2011. We since waited for her to be a great performer, a concert diva, an Adele. She was shy, capable of the best, of the worst and of a stream of other clumsiness nuances. She learned on the job, except that the job in what concerns her was the Olympia, the show Saturday Night Live and gigantic festivals.

 

Does she have pleasure to be on stage? "Sometimes", only, she admits. Internet and a lot of journalists forgave her nothing, blaming her for overloading her music and story-tell her life. Feign the excess for not so much in sum. Born To Die's clip directed by Yoann Lemoine alias Woodkid, where we see her princess-like, under the golds of the castle of Fontainebleau, surrounded with tigers and a tattooed rocker, enlarged her classical and theatrical style of that time. Hundred and forty five million people saw it on YouTube. The more some scolded her and the more her success increased.

 

The Frenchman filmed her again, in black and white, for another of her key tracks, Blue Jeans. Around her, on the high grey walls of this Californian modern cave, the ghost of James Goldstein is everywhere. His souvenir photos at the arm of Rihanna, George Clooney and a stream of famous top models go yellow on a long shelf. He framed and distilled in every corner of his villa of articles in his glory. Lana del Rey does not share this pride. She reads nothing of what's written at her subject, "too hard" she recalls, avoid social networks where she is little prolix. Her everyday life doesn't make the cover of celebrity magazines while the slightest information regarding her floods the web. "I am still between two worlds from the point of view of celebrity. In the United States, I'm not on television a lot, I know nobody famous and I go out little. At home everything is always turned on, the TV, the radio, the lights. It even helps me to fall asleep. I'm often nervous when it's time to go to sleep. What I adore is to be behind the wheel of my car. That relaxes me. 

 

She knows by heart the tortuous Mulholland drive and the inhuman highways of the city. The lifestyle of LA, rhythmed by the traffic, allows her to listen to the newcomers, with a preference for The Weeknd, Father John Misty and the historical KCRW, one of the best stations of the region. 

 

Ambivalence

The wind makes her return under the glass bubble roof. She poses unblinkingly in a small green hooked dress which belongs to her. This taste of vintage doesn't leave her. She just changed of era. Lana Del Rey kept this ambivalence which captivated as much as contorted. An aura at the same time naive, sensual and even sexual, comes from her, who recalls certain blinkings of eye of the heroines of American Beauty. Some objectified her because she had a vamp look, romantico-dark postures and an indecent mouth.

 

"We're never sure of what we have to reveal, particularly when we're an artist, she admits. I come from a traditional, reserved family. I need to feel the situations, and to master what takes place around me. Saying too much can be badly interpreted. And if you keep silent, people imagine what they want." She evoked in some past interviews, a possible KO abandonment, chose obviously to pursue her road and left the field open for other tsunamis of the showbiz named Lorde, Grimes or Miley Cyrus.

 

The young country girl, cleaving star like her, covers one of her tracks on stage. "I saw that. That surprised me. We are so different. She is bigger than life, inordinate, she says before specifying that the main difference between them, is that I have never tried to shock because I know what that can engender. That was a part of the confusion towards me. That perturbed me."

 

Her five million albums sold in the world helped her to manage the storm. The Lana bashing predicted for her to die before having lived. Lana Del Rey has rather the feeling to begin a third life: "before the disaster, the disaster and after", she jokes. She is ironic but adds seriously that the critics weakened her. "I do not understand the expression "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger". Me, it just made me more fragile. I'm tired of all of this. It's very uncomfortable. Thankfully, when I write, I don't tell myself, will they like it? I just hope it won't happen again."

 

And asks, knowing the answer: "Have you have already read a good article on me? In France, it's possible. Even the hardest journalists tried to identify what I made. Maybe because you have a real artistic and romantic culture. I feel understood [in France]. Anywhere else, what's written, it's never about the music, and always about all the rest. I do not really understand why. But c'est la vie", she philosophizes, in French in the text. She found her torn jeans back. The day begins quietly to darken. Lana del Rey is well conscious that "the conflict is [her]". "But I am a singer, what can I do?", she answers with this baby doll pout which made so much noise. The debate on her success came too fast should dilute in the new sad and carnal strings of Ultraviolence, chapter 3 of her career.
