found the list! my lanaboards sistrens, i present to you my child:

(everything will be under spoilers with a little explanation of my reasoning behind my choices so i sound less insane)

Born to Die / 2010 - 2011 Unreleased:

Spoiler

- Lolita (1962) duh!

- The Crush (1993)

- American Beauty (1999)

i think these are as "stereotypical lana" as you could get. i decided to mention unreleased from the pre-born to die period because i think the themes of movies are closer to that then born to die itself, specifically the crush. think of jealous girl, serial killer, prom song (gone wrong) and st. tropez.

Ride:

Spoiler

- The Lost Boys (1987)

i chose ride specifically instead of paradise because it's more like a visual thing related to the video instead of the song itself

Ultraviolence:

Spoiler

ultraviolence is a notoriously hard one to me. i don't think the perfect ultraviolence movie exists but if it existed it would be a noir movie about drug dealers in florida during the 1970s, directed by hitchcock. it has this very specific vibe of a gloomy summer that i found difficult to find something that really matched with the mood of the record, so the following suggestions are more of a loose ~vibe~

- Christiane F.: Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo (1981)

- Scarface (1983) this one is more like a honeymoon vibe than ultraviolence with the mafia thing but the whole cuban drug dealer in miami going on is very florida kilos if you ask me! think of it like an in-between the two eras…

- Drugstore Cowboy (1989)

- Shangri-La Suite (2016)

HONORABLE MENTION:

The Simpsons: S06E01 "Bart of Darkness" (1994) - i know i'm cheating because it's not a movie ok and i know it might sound like i'm trolling but hear me out people! the greater part of this episode is like the perfect audio-visual representation of a gloomy summer vibe

Honeymoon:

Spoiler

- Valley of the Dolls (1967)

- The Godfather (1972)

- Casino (1995)

- Call Me By Your Name (2017)

i mean… is an explanation really needed here? old school glamour, mob wife life, italian mafia, summer in europe… it doesn't get more honeymoon than that! call me by your name is more like a visual vibe of italian summer than a theme vibe

Lust for Life (Witchy Version):

Spoiler

the horror side from the lust for life era that never was! think of lust for life (demo), if i die young, love horror strings and lust for life trailer c83dd58df8157ba465949579c1903c73.gif

- Carrie (1976)

- Fright Night (1985)

- A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1989) don't ask me why i chose this specific film from the franchise is just the ~vibe~ i get

Lust for Life:

Spoiler

- Drive (2011)

- The Love Witch (2016)

- Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood (2019)

isn't it ironic that the love witch is in this lust for life instead of the witchy one? well, the movie has this colorful and fun vibe that i felt was more fitting with the record we ended up having instead of the darker witchy one. and drive is here because it reminds me of white mustang video.

HONORABLE MENTION:

Carnival of Souls (1962) - it isn't really the vibe of neither incarnations of lust for life imo but lana sampled a dialogue from this on 13 beaches

Norman Fucking Rockwell:

Spoiler

- The O.C. (2003 - 2007)

ok i'm cheating again by naming a tv series instead of a film but, in my head, just like if ultraviolence was a movie it would be a noir one, if nfr was a movie it would be a late 1990s coming of age film set in california. the o.c. is the closest thing to my vision. the following movies are ones that i think are similar to the series or have a similar aesthetic to nfr

- Before Sunrise (1995)

- Palo Alto (2013)

- Lady Bird (2017)

HONORABLE MENTION:

The Simpsons S07E25 "Summer of 4 Ft. 2" (1996) - ok cheating again… but hands down the closest thing to the hypothetical nfr movie that exists in my mind, it just ticks all boxes! late 90s coming of age set on the beach and a beach boys song during the credits like c'mon now!

Candy Necklace:

Spoiler

- Gilda (1946)

again something more related to the visuals of the music video than the song itself or ocean blvd themes

Whatever the Henry era is called now formerly known as Lasso:

Spoiler

in my delusions the vibe of this era would be:

- The Skeleton Key (2005)

- Pearl (2022)

but in reality it will probably be like:

- Nine to Five (1980)

also, not related to any era but lana as a person seems like the type of girl that would enjoy Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991). idk why is just the vibe i get from her  :true:

it's too big sorry 😭 i got carried away a lil… but yeah shangri-la suite is very lana :true:

other than that, i'd say the crush is the one that screams lana the most! it's really jealous girl + serial killer + lolita in movie form lol

“Funeral Parade of Roses” (1969), of which my signature is from, is very Lana coded

i have never come across another person who also loves/knows this film :trisha: one of my absolute faves!!!

Cry Baby (1990) - a quirky, funny and deliciously camp John Waters-directed film that takes a very literal approach to the ~good girls obsessed with bad boys~ trope set in 1950s America, so underrated with such a great soundtrack!

Some Like It Hot (1959) - Marilyn Monroe plays a whimsical, gorgeous, often-drunk singer of a travelling all-girls band as she attempts to woo a rich man and befriends the band's two newbies, who just so happen to be two cross-dressing men on the run from gangsters. need i say more!?!?

Secretary (2002) - an awkward, fresh-from-the-psych-ward young woman takes up a job as a secretary to a demanding, strange, emotionally distant lawyer. what ensues is a whole lot of bdsm sexiness

Pearl (2022) - you know it... and i know it...... im gonna be a star.......

Shirkers (2018) - there's a certain emotional quality to this film that i can't help but feel is lana-coded; the nature of this film is pretty hard to describe, but the letterboxd synopsis for it does a better job than i ever could: "In 1992, teenager Sandi Tan shot Singapore’s first indie road movie with her enigmatic American mentor Georges – who then vanished with all the footage. Twenty years later, the 16mm film is recovered, sending Tan, now a novelist in Los Angeles, on a personal odyssey in search of Georges’ vanishing footprints."

The Room, Sharknado, The Minecraft Movie, Paul Blart Mall Cop

But unironically besides the obvious ones people mentioned, i think gangster movies can be narrowly Lana coded in a way. Stuff like the Godfather and Scarface, and some lesser talked about ones like Casino, The Untouchables, Gangs of New York, Donnie Brasko, Heat… Lana-coded isn’t the first thing to come to mind for most of these movies but i’d say there tangentially in the same ballpark

Besides that, perhaps Pulp Fiction, American Beauty, and i’m probably really stretching with these last two but Requiem for a Dream and Vertigo (underrated!) come to mind when thinking about these types of movies.

And if were talking about white trash trailer park, of course we must mention Gummo and Pink Flamingos
