  1. Known about them for quite awhile, but just recently saw them front row at Sweetlife right before Lana came on stage. They were amazing. Their stage presence is just so energetic and you can't help but to scream along the lyrics. During a song at Sweetlife, Fitz got so into it he literally fell off the stage.. like right beside me. Fitz & Noelle have this awesome, unexpected mojo when they sing together. They look like such an unlikely pair but let me tell you, it fucking works!

And "Hall & Oates meets technopop", what a perfect description.

  2. 1. If you were to ever write an autobiography or memoir, what would you title it and what would the most important chapter be about?

    2. Out of every song you've ever written, which is most dear to your heart and why?

    3. Can I have three more questions?

    1. What are the names of all your past lovers and what is a song you've written about each? (This would literally solve all of our Lanalysis problems, ever.)

    2. If you had to pick one lyric of all your songs to sum up exactly who you are as a person, which would it be?

    3. What is your biggest regret? What are you most proud of?

  3. "What's happening? Where did we go?

The Jersey shore was long ago"

(She should have kept the "what's happening" in OM because it gives [at least for me] a different and more sad feeling)

YES. I know exactly what you mean. When she says "what's happening" it's like she's watching her relationship/life crumble in front of her and there's nothing she can do but look back on the memories. So much sadder/better.

  4. Let's be real, OTTR is just one big lyrical masterpiece but my favorite line is: Glass room, perfume, cognac, lilac fumes / Says it feels like heaven to him

Also Old Money is becoming one of my favorites, lyrically: The power of youth is on my mind / Sun set, small town, I'm out of time / Will you still love me when I shine from words but not from beauty

On the collaboration process for Ultraviolence:
“Meeting [producer/Black Keys frontman] Dan Auerbach changed everything. He really brought fun back into my life. We had a natural chemistry between us that was kind of palpable and he was spontaneous. We’d go into the studio with the band and do one cut of Ultraviolence—raw and live with all seven players in the same room with an old bedroom microphone—and leave it as it was. It was thrilling.”

    On her current fashion transformation:
“There has been an evolution. It came with the music. I love the idea of being able to get up on stage in my favourite denim shorts and my favourite linen shirt and wear a pair of gold bands and diamonds. It is so freeing. When I first got on stage—four years ago—I felt like what I had to do was put a dress on and be presentable in some way.”

On how her relationship with rocker Barrie-James O’Neill fueled Ultraviolence‘s lyrics:
“I’m a dark character and he very is an even darker character than I am. Trying to get some consistency and some normality within the dynamic of that relationship has been impossible. Songs like “Shades of Blue” came out all that.”

    On what gives her confidence:
“Lately, I’ve sought comfort in one-on-one interactions with people backstage after the shows—spending hours with fans afterwards and drawing energy from that well. People liking what I’m doing on stage is a big ‘fuck you’ to whoever doubted me in the first place.”

  6. I know it's been said a thousand times already but I'll say it again... This video is a disappointment at it's finest. Ultraviolence isn't a bad song and she could have done so much more with the video. Although I'm a little biased because I always prefer high production videos over low quality, this video isn't even a good homemade one. Here what I don't like about it: 1) There's literally one scene. One. One outfit, one filter, one location. It's singular and predictable, and in turn, boring as hell. 2) The filter isn't even pretty! I know Lana loves her muted greens, but the whole yellow tone theme is ugly. I thought with Ultraviolence, she'd go with darker, cooler colors like blues, purples, grays... not this pee-colored mess of a color palette. If there would have been a little more of that purple tone seen as she first walks into the church and the lighting changes, maybe it would have been better. 3) There's no story line whatsoever. You can go on with your theories about lost love and marriage and death but in all honesty, I think Lana just wanted to put on a wedding dress, pout, and play with filters. I think it's all about what's aesthetically pleasing to Lana, but even then, I wasn't expecting something so flat. Lana's has such an interesting mind and has spoken before about how she's in really into film so I was expecting something much more advanced in terms of plot and themes. 4) The video doesn't suit the song, at least in my opinion. I know not everything has to be literal but she could have at least saved the wedding dress for something like a Yayo/Gun & Roses (although we all know that's never going to happen.) The only part that was the least bit literal was when he put her hand around her neck in a choking fashion, it was only a glimpse of the "violence love" portrayed in the song.

On a less critical, more positive note, there were some things I did enjoy about the video! 1) The lips are back. I know they look a little awkward in some scenes (see: orange) but overall I love when her lips are plumped up like that. Her makeup looked good in this video, now if only I could actually see it through all those filters... 2) She, in general, looked beautiful. I think it's hard to deny that aspect. Lana's facial expression, for the most part, were convincing and beautiful. 3) Some of the angles were good. In particular I really liked the scene under the wedding veil with the light coming through the lace on to her face. If there were more scenes with interesting angles, the video would have been less boring.

I'm hoping this is just a project Lana wanted to do with Francesco in Italy and that there's another Ultraviolence video directed by Nabil laying around somewhere. One with the smokey black and white rock n' roll theme. Praying for that.

  7. I really loved Banks when Fall Over came out but I really didn't like London at all. I was starting to lose my love for her but Beggin for Thread is such a bopppppp! Loving it.

  8. After spending two hours of reading everyone else's special moments, I'd like to post some of mine. Here comes wasting another two hours writing this response. I'm going to organize them by album!

    Sirens

    • None, this album is a snooze fest.

    LDRAKALG

    • In (one of my favorite Lana songs ever) Oh Say Can You See there are a ton of moments. The little guitar picking at the beginning and in between lines at 0:11 and 1:40, the at the and I wi-ul at 2:10, and the send you to Mars high note at 3:07.
    • The breath at the end of Mermaid Motel, 3:28.
    • Of course the dark night line in Yayo, 4:03.
    • The crescendo in For K Part 2 at 1:07 and then I like the way you wear your sweater off your shouuuulder.

    Born to Die

    • Off to the Races obviously is just one big moment for me since it is my favorite song in the world but there's two parts that stick out to me... First the whole "glass room, perfume, cognac, lilac fuuuumes" line because she uses so many mellifluous words one after another it's just a lyric-gasm. Then right before 3:30 there's a little quiet part and then the bass just starts jumping and it aligns perfectly with "you're lying with your gold chain on" <3 <3 <3
    • The first few words of Radio on the album version and in the demo when the flute comes in with the *doodle-doodle-dooooo* noise like at 2:40.
    • In Million Dollar Man live (especially at Hackney) when she literally wails like "one for the moneyyuuuhh, woauuhuhuhahh!!!!"
    • The last chorus of Blue Jeans when it builds up after the bridge and drops at 2:55. It's like a cannonball of cinematic perfection.
    • The entire Diet Mountain Dew demo is amazing but the "I dunno why but I liiiike it" line at 1:48.

    Paradise

    • Not exactly musical but during the Ride monologue when she does a short little breath before "I was always an usual girl".
    • In Gods & Monsters how the drums and guitar just break down when she sings "Motel, sprees, sprees" at 1:06.

    Ultraviolence

    • The whole tempo change in West Coast gets me every time. It's genius.
    • The "ba-da-da-da-da-babay"s and "yeauhhhss" at the end of Brooklyn Baby.
    • I don't even like Guns & Roses that much but the haunting "ro-oohuh-ooses" part at 3:40 gives me shivers. I'll listen to the whole song just to hear that.
    • "And all my girlfriends!" in Florida Kilos just because you can hear the smile on her face.
    • The Lizzy Grant-esque background "yeah" in Fucked My Way Up to the Top at 1:04.

    Unreleased

    • In my fave unreleased Gangsta Boy there are a couple key moments. Of course there's the spine chilling yet adorable "my gangsta booOOOYYY-ooh-ooh-oohuh-ahhh!" in the beginning. Then at 1:21 when the backing vocals come in and she sings, "like ya leather and ya long hair, hunnay, hunnay", not sure why but it's always been an awesome moment for me.
    • The repetitive "like"s in My Best Days and the boppy breakdown at the end.
    • The "woah-oh-oh" part in Last Girl on Earth when she goes higher at 2:20.
    • In Television Heaven the haunting backing vocals over and after the bridge followed by a cute lil laugh.
    • In Hawaiian Tropic that heavenly vocal overlay with the chorus and "I remember party dresses" at 3:21.
    • The moan in Serial Killer along with those quick "ha-ha-ha-ha-has!"
    • "You turn my mood from black to blue-oOoOooh" in the Hundred Dollar Bill demo.

  9. I've only listened to Wish Bone but it's got a couple really good songs on there. Pyromaniac could be such a hit and the video is stunning, there's something so nostalgic about it. The lyricism on Renaissance Girl is amazing. Cherry on Top, Love a Man Dead, and My Boxer are decent bops. Some of the more downbeat songs I just can't bear though (see Next Summer, Sleepytown, etc...) I've been meaning to give her older stuff a listen but haven't yet. Anyone have zips to Fauna or Oh Land?
