  1. There were several opportunities for Marina in her career and I really don't think Atlantic actually gave a shit about her (not that it's a completely negative thing, she had artistic freedom after all), especially seeing ADIAML vinyl messy release and whatnot.

  2. FFS it was never confirmed Marina dropped Lana after QFTC, to knowing of MINE she unfollowed her a bit earlier if not by clearing her all instagram following whatsoever but people went on with that myth because of the drama.

  3. Just catching up your discussion I need y'all to remember that Lies is about Theo from Hurts, not Burns about whom is I'm a Ruin and Blue. And Marina's post-ADIAML wish to re-record her old stuff might be due to her lack of creative progress, which I hope will get better now that she's on a self-recovery journey (better late than never IG).

Froot isn't cohesive yes, I haven't seen fans saying that to my surprise. I never really found her albums that cohesive because in her albums there are sounds of everything, even in TFJ or EH (but EH is probably her most cohesive one). But imo cohesiveness is overrated. I love an album which has different sounds. That's why I love Froot, there is a perfect mix of other genres.

What I meant was rather cohesiveness in quality. The Froot title track is amazing, but such ones like Can't Pin Me Down bring nothing to the table, and the message of Gold is priviliged point of view and irritating. TFJ and EH are simply richer, both in context and melody, and I never understood people choosing FROOT as their fav. album, but it's just me. Not that it's a bad record of course, I love the aesthetics and the atmosphere, it's very nice "homemade pop" let's say.

  5. To be honest, FROOT was never that good to begin with. What value do Can't Pin Me Down or Gold have? Ik it's probably a taboo thing in the fandom but this record is not as cohesive as people portray it to be.

I am listening to Purge The Poison now. This song is laughably bad. It's almost a parody song. It must suck for the old fans who enjoyed her first three projects which are a bit more digestible. I wonder how much actual charity work she has done... Probably zero...

Why bother listening to Purge the Poison? I think she was in such a state of mind, especially during her breakup, that she simply had to create something juvenile like this. But if you really want to give her a try as a Lana fan I highly recommend songs like "Valley of the Dolls", "Starring Role", "Happy", "Immortal", "Teen Idle", "Obsessions", "The State of Dreaming", ones that are actually touching and Lana-esque in some places. And her wisest sociopolitical song to this day probably remains "Sex Yeah", could've been written by Lily Allen.

As for charity, we know only about that project to help Afroamerican artists I guess?

  7. Hate to say it but listening to her music feels more cringeworthy with each month recently. This is something that Lana has been able to escape, perhaps thanks to her experimentalism and neverending passion to music, even at her lowest or most desperate she never sounded "cheap", she's been able to finally gain international critics' respect. I don't know if it's because of my age but certainly the feeling that most of Marina's fandom consists of angsty teenagers does not help. I can't help but get the impression she's somewhat stuck in that immature music place and does not want to grow. I need her to release something actually mature and meaningful, not fucked with the food chain fucked with the farming too shit.

it was also 'forced' because she was getting out of her contract asap, I was hoping that perhaps her new stuff will be better without that restriction but her poetry isn't it. it's like she has a good idea then has to 'ruin' it with a live laugh love-esqe line.

I don't think your opinion is that controversial, I think it's what a lot of people are thinking but no one wants to say... I think on the surface ADIAML seems better because the production is better/more consistent, L+F has songs that have good lyrics with bad production and 'bad' lyrics with good production. but that's what having 22 co-writers and 13 producers will do.

exactly, it's obvious love + fear will have more polished lyrics because of the amount of co writers. i do think marina has always been a clunky lyricist and that's why i adore electra heart the most, because other people like nowels, rick or even dr. luke helped her execute her own idea better. what i still cannot comprehend is simply how marina doesn't bother to proofread whatever she's writing now

  9. fans: marina release inha we hate you

marina: :((( mmm okay sooo here's a new version i'm gonna release it soon now pls go to my concerts and i'll sing it here and there!!
fans: yay marina we love you can we pls now have it on spotify??
    marina: right imma head out

  10. After learning that the released version is (apparently?) the original one produced by Nowels, I'm more lenient. Rerecording this and stripping down from the upgrade felt less forgivable. I think it will grow on me and I admittedly might've been biased because of all those beautiful fanmade music videos to a James / viral version. However, I do still miss the drums and I hate this cheap instrumentation part in 0:50 repeatedly used by daddy Nowels throughout Lust for Life but m'kay.

I was referring to this tweet and I'm pretty sure she made another reference but I can't find it, obviously on it's own I would not be like 'OMG ELECTRA HEART' as you say it's homage to 1920s film for this character and other iconic movie moments, but it's because of her own tweets I mentioned it

She was joking just to get more views on this video... the film is obviously a reference to a female archetype in mass media throughout ages. Sure, Electra might live somewhere in an alternative universe but the way fandom thinks those three Marinas in VFT video represent TFJ, EH and FROOT are sooo delusional.

What the "fucked with the food chain" line was supposed to be tho....stanning this woman gets more and more tiring.

it’s made with the unleaked pro tools, the instrumental is real, it’s the one sent by another producer that was then reproduced by Stargate, but the vocals have been constructed from the various files in the folder

i remember someone admitted to making it, as the protools are supposedly just a load of vocal takes, the demo instrumental and a couple of final bounces

Still, the demo demo is this one:

I don't know if I can see this take. I don't see Melanie giving into woke culture anywhere (although Portals is barf so we can handshake there) - I just see her as being emotionally stunted and immature and point blank stupid. She can fall into a hole.

Marina - I'll say that I think it's very possible that an artist can be moved by a perspective or movement (ex: Me Too), and really want to dive into that space and lend their voice to something, but it comes out as disingenuous or "fake" because they haven't been touched by the depth of the topic the same way, or their current lifestyle insulates them from certain nuances that really make the "heart" of the movement hit home. I think that's what may have happened here?

I don't know if it's really "give in to woke culture", so much as 'Hey, I'm a female artist and these topics have affected me as well. I'm engaged enough with the topic to want to pour my thoughts and emotions on the subject into my next body of work and lend my voice and support." Like I don't feel like there were fans or people pointing a gun to her head and saying "GIVE ME A FEMINIST ALBUM NOW" and her going "OKAY OKAY HERE'S MANS WORLD AND PTP OMG OMG PLEASE LET ME SLEEP BESTIES :crai:"

I just think she needed to put out a last album, the topics were of enough interest and importance to her, it was all relevant conversation in pop culture at that moment, and she has enough skill as an artist to coherently pull it together- she could, so she did. The flub is just that it feels slightly out of touch, but not in a fake woke try hard way, but in a "girl you haven't eaten this dog food in a minute though" way - there's not as much "soul" in the material. At least for me.

I'm probably being a bit inconsistent in this opinion if compared to any prior statements I've made on Marina and ADIAML, but I flex and bend over time, so...

I think that the problem with ADIAML was how she just abandoned the political idea and focused on post heartbreak project merging them into one which neither makes sense nor lets any of them shine bright enough. I wonder if that's also why she didn't actually rewrite anything because PTP is so lyrically messy it hurts. Anyway I hope she'll redeem herself artistically now that she's not only single but also free from a toxic relationship draining her energy...

If it was indeed the case- she should of taken her to the courts for discriminatory behaviour

    Really bad

Jess was not a good manager to begin with, no matter if pregnant or not, and what she did voluntarily was bring a new born baby to Marina's concert to give her a surprise birthday cake which ain't really responsible and blaming then that on Marina is hypocrisy.

The way I want this so bad, but my realist brain keeps kicking in. Like,  she's 37. She was in her early-mid 20s with TFJ, she was she mid-20s with EH, and she was cresting 30 with Froot.

As a doddering old fuck 30-something myself, I can say that there's some grand perspective shifts and emotional changes that do come with age; and I think there's a certain energy and emotional tone that came out of the TFJ to Froot run that won't be able to be recaptured or recreated by her, just by virtue of having that much more life experience and wisdom and perspective.

L&F and ADIAML feel.....'softened' - there's just not the same attitude there anymore. TFJ had a punky, spunky, quirky energy to it. EH had this rebellious, sexy vibe that also managed to be politically aware and didn't undermine itself by doing so. Froot continued the theme, and it felt matured and sultry and swam in it's own emotions. But then L&F got a little tooooo mellowed out; and felt like it was asleep at the wheel, and ADIAML just tried way too hard - it's was too topical to a fault. (And I say all of this, finding something to love on ALL her albums, and generally enjoying all of them overall)

Her earlier albums pulled from her struggles with depression and anxiety, nods to eating disorders, hints at her own self loathing or career frustrations, etc. - things that all have deep emotional roots and deep emotional resonance with lots of people. Her last two albums...don't seem to go as deep, to me. They feel like they're from someone who's more relaxed with themselves, someone who's more relaxed with their career, someone who's not so hard on themselves anymore. She feels like she's turned the spotlight away from things that are drawing from within herself and are now drawing from an external source instead.

I just don't think she's got the mindset or the career positioning or the emotional stage to pull off anything like she did with TFJ-EH-Froot anymore.

It's understandable how she has little to sing about herself, probably says good about her mental health (which admittedly isn't that good seeing her unfortunately chaotic and too Rupikauresque poetry). She could've rescued herself from all that had she started writing songs from fictional characters' perspective, same way Kate Bush did.

she's so annoying, her tweet after that was 'Is anyone else also perfectly happy doing nothing?' :awkney2:

idk how to word this without sounding unsympathetic (tbh I suppose I am a little) but she's talked about how social media makes her stressed but then she'll post something she knows will make her fans go wild.. I know stans will go feral at the slightest provocation, but she doesn't help herself when she does stuff like this

anyway, bets on her ignoring L+F's 4th anniversary? it's not a 'special' one after all. I was thinking the other day what terrible timing it was with the pandemic right after, to me it still sort of feels like 2020 and she just released this album recently:rip: ADIAML felt like an EP whilst we wait for a 'proper' album, which imo she just put that album ASAP so she could get out of contract

She put that album ASAP so we could forget L+F. We received it fairly well so now she can chill yet another year. She's becoming admittedly annoying. How come she can even stand for social justice when she's using all her wealth to doing nothing and basking in sunlight when she knows that her audience does not consist of old money or Las Vegas influencers. Venus Fly Trap was cute for a while but if she ever agains boasts about being a millionairess... if you don't know what to do with your money just give it to charity lmao.
