It wasn’t rigged. People showed up and voted for Trump and didn’t bother even voting down ballot, which is why Dems did better in senate and gubernatorial elections in the same states that Harris lost. That’s a “good” sign for Democrats that Trumpism probably ends with Trump. Trump-like figures like Kari Lake, Dr. Oz, and Mark Robinson continue to fail to get MAGA support. 2028’s Republican primary will be interesting. I have a feeling Nancy Mace could unexpectedly become a big player (and I don’t hate all her policies, as she’s more left-leaning socially than other GOP members). As far as this current incoming administration, ATP I just pray they don’t crash or tank the stock market (I hate to admit that the record highs of markets have helped me cope with the Harris loss a bit better), and are too busy infighting amongst themselves to pass any weird policies for women and LGBTQ+.

Again, I don’t mean to sanitize, but just to give a bit of ray of sunshine here: - Most of Trump’s policies will not be implemented. Tariffs are just a negotiating tactic, and we all know they will not actually replace income tax - On that note, just like 2016, the biggest Trump legacy will be his tax cuts. I see him further reducing income tax on the top 3 brackets by 5-10% and on the lowest 3 by 3-5%. - He’s not gonna do jack shit about the border, because his replacement will need the issue to run on in 4 years. - Mass deportations will not occur, namely because ICE is understaffed and the Trump deficit doesn’t give much room for more govt. spending. Also, the fact of the matter is that most illegal immigrants live in Blue States, and they won’t be helping Trump. - Gender affirming healthcare (and healthcare in general) will take the biggest hit 😭💔. It’ll now be a state issue, like abortion. - Abortion had a relatively decent night. The majority of Trump voters also voted to protect or expand abortion rights (except for Florida's “super majority” requirement) and Montana. Trump’s legacy thus far has been one of ineffectiveness. That trend will continue. It’s just uniquely horrible that he will be able to cement a 6-3 Supreme Court conservative lean, which will have long term effects, but not immediate quality of life implications yet. The media will prey on your outrage for clicks, do not let Trump take over your life. This is certainly a sad day for many, and I am not saying we are not allowed to grieve and mourn, but this is the path forward, and no amount of tears will change that. There was no justice last night, but there can be mercy, because we can give that to each other 🙃 Signing off for work xx Mer.

In hindsight, Dems messaging was probably too smug. If you look at the education breakdown, the “well actually, according to economists the economy is doing great” line probably didn’t land with a demographic so far away from the stock market and from understanding economic theory. I really don’t want to sanitize what happened, but I think the exit polls we initially saw were wrong. This election wasn’t about abortion, fundamental rights, democracy, identity politics, or joy—it was about having money—and I probably (along with a lot of you here) didn’t see it coming bc 4 years ago I was in college, so I couldn’t measurably say if I am worse off or better off lol

No Democrat would’ve won this. This was a resounding referendum on the economy, and not the one measured by the S&P, but by how much the average $50k a year person feels like they have left over at the end of the month.

I blame all of this on Hochul.

Ultimately, the average American voter looked at their wallet and felt like they had more money leftover in 2016-2019. And that was all they cared about.

Young men, who are generally low propensity voters, decided today was the day they actually commit to something and show up. Harris would’ve won if their turnout was the same it was in previous elections.
