Argentina 2023 Elections: Upcoming ballotage

Elecciones 2023: ¿qué pasa si NO VOTO hoy 22 de octubre? - El Cronista

Presidential elections are being held this year in Argentina. Primary elections happened in August and the results were unexpected for the people, candidates and most importantly the media: far-right ultra-liberal Javier Milei won the primary elections with over 30% of votes. During the following weeks, Milei got interviewed in virtually all main TV news shows and radio, spreading his ideas of dollarization of the economy and elimination and/or privatization of the Central Bank and all state-funded institutions (including schools, universities and hospitals). Milei also stated that he's planning to fly to Israel and move the Argentine Consulate from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem during the first days of his presidency. His Vice-President Victoria Villarruel supports his ideas and has a narrative of anti-LGBT and pro-Armed Forces.

General elections took place just yerterday (October 22) and surprisingly Javier Milei ranked second with barely 29% of votes. Center-left Sergio Massa got the highest percentage of votes with over 36%; however, both candidates will battle once more for the Presidency on a ballotage, expected to happen on November 19. Right-wing Patricia Bullrich got the third spot with 23% of votes. Her poorly executed campaign disqualified her chance to become the main right-wing force in Argentina.

The country is going through arguably its worst economic crisis of all time. Poverty is rising to a tragic 50% of the population, inflation has reached over 120% only this year and the devaluation of the Argentine peso seems to be unstoppable. Current President, leftist Alberto Fernández, has a disapproval rate of 80%, following his unsuccessful economic policies and many scandals.

Patricia Bullrich has expressed her support to Javier Milei, despite him previously calling her a "terrorist", "murderer" and "loser". Mathematically, if every Bullrich supporter votes Milei next month, he could easily win.

There's been a lot of talk about this Javier Milei character. He seems to be the first real self proclaimed "anarcho-capitalist" in a real political position. I'm interested to see what he does. Populism isn't going anywhere away any time soon especially in these types of countries.

He won’t be able to push the vast majority of his policies through Congress
