  1. She is clearly a smart girl and very self aware. And she has a point of view that is outside the mainstream of us mere mortals that can make her seem crazy, insane, or out of touch. I do agree she says things in interviews that are indicative of her playing the media; like shooting fish in a barrel, it just so easy. Her comments on feminism in the Fader article are an example of that. She was very careful and precise in what she said and what she didn't say. The derivative news media just went insane. However, I also believe that she just blurts things out without much thought that most people would filter first, and that reveal her vulnerabilities. ("Lana, how to you mentally prepare for a concert?" "I freak the fuck out.") So, I think her public statements are a combination of both well thought out cynicism and emotionally vulnerable honesty.
  2. Because she is willing to say those things out loud and expose herself and be vulnerable. That's one of the things I love about her.
  3. I am very invested in EWG/LDR as an artist. I have a deep emotional connection with her music and it's pretty much the only thing I listen to as far as contemporary music is concerned. Following her career several points come to mind: 1. She loves to write music. She has said this repeatedly. Look at her catalog of leaked music as proof of this. 2. She loves to studio sing. She has also said this repeatedly. I love what she does with her vocal layering and her vocal range is pretty intense in the studio. 3. She is nervous on stage performing live. I saw her on May 8th at the Oakdale in CT and loved the show and thought her performance was amazing. But as one who suffers from social anxiety, I understand were she is coming from. 4. She is a sensitive soul and takes the negative press as personal attacks. I believe her Myers-Briggs Temperament Indicator is that of an INFP, and as such, the negative press must be horrible for her. She said as much in the Fader interview. It's easy to say grow a thick skin and stop being whiney, but this is who she is. Oh, by the way, the comparisons to Cobain are not far off. He was an INFP as well. So were does that leave us? She is an amazing woman who is a brilliant artist, song writer, and singer. But she is also a personality type (INFP) that includes the following traits: Overly sensitive Sad and depressed Feels broken to the core Prone to quitting As a deeply devoted fan, I truly believe that she feels that her Lana Del Rey career breakthrough isn't what she thought it would be. I believe that she is surprised by the criticisms she has received and continues to receive, and I believe that she feels that the whole thing is bullshit. Her Lizzie Grant days were probably filled with more happiness than she has now. But at the same time, she can do more musically within the industry as Lana Del Rey, so it's a trade off. At the point when the bullshit gets to be to much, I think she is probably done, or at least will take a long break. Most "stars" are in it for the money or the fame. These don't seem to be motivators for her. She wants to create and she wants to be respected. I suspect she will write music for quite some time. The question is, how much of it will we get to listen to? I feel blessed to have AKA, BTD, all her unreleased leaked stuff and now UV. Will we get more? I hope so, but I recognize that her career may be much shorter than I would like.
  4. I don't want her to collaborate. She is an artist first and foremost. It would be like asking Picasso to collaborate with Matisse. JMO. I'd rather she grown and evolve on her own. Perhaps continuing to work with different producers as she has done with AKA, BTD/Paradise, and now Ultraviolence.
  5. I am so proud of Lizzie and how far she has come.
  6. I had intended to start this discussion elsewhere, but after reading the Fader interview I thought I'd comment here briefly. I joined the Lanaboards because I have a deep emotional connection to the music of Lana Del Rey. I feel like she is talking for me. I am also a student of them Myers-Briggs Temperament Indicator. I am an INFP. Based on what I've read on this site, I believe there are quite a few members that are also INFPs (see http://lanaboards.com/index.php?/topic/2833-myers-briggs-type-indicator/ hat tip to Colacunt.) INFPs are relatively rare personality types representing 2-5% of the population. I speculate that Lizzy Grant is an INFP as well, which perhaps explains why so many INFPs are attracted to her. After reading the Fader article I am more convinced that she is. I will follow up in the conversations area as to exactly why I think this. But to understand the INFP, you need to understand the following traits commoin to an INFPs: (see http://similarminds.com/jung/infp.html) creative smart idealist loner attracted to sad things disorganized avoidant can be overwhelmed by unpleasant feelings prone to quitting prone to feelings of loneliness ambivalent of the rules solitary daydreams about people to maintain a sense of closeness focus on fantasies acts without planning low self confidence emotionally moody can feel defective prone to lateness likes esoteric things wounded at the core feels shame frequently losing things prone to sadness prone to dreaming about a rescuer disorderly observer easily distracted does not like crowds can act without thinking private can feel uncomfortable around others familiar with the darkside hermit more likely to support marijuana legalization can sabotage self likes the rain sometimes can't control fearful thoughts prone to crying prone to regret attracted to the counter culture can be submissive prone to feeling discouraged frequently second guesses self not punctual not always prepared can feel victimized prone to confusion prone to irresponsibility can be pessimistic These traits are core to who we are. It is difficult to live in a world that has expectations of normalcy since we are anything but. The Fader article seems to highlight much of this. Anyway, rather than hijack this thread I will continue this discussion elsewhere. Oh, and as an aside ... we take criticism as a personal attack. There are many INFP blogs that discuss this issue ad nauseum. Imagine what she must have gone through 2012-2013. I would have been having suicidal thoughts on a daily basis as well. Peace.
  7. That's a tough question. I'm not the artist. Its like asking what you would change in Picasso's art. I pretty much accept what she has given us. Really, all of her released songs I like. I know conceptually, everything she does is an art project, so it all matters. Changing the art means changing her. I like how she has been evolving as an artist. To the question though, there is a lot of really good unrealeased stuff. I am grateful that she has let it all live on YouTube and not pulled it down for copyright infringement. It's unlikely that any off that stuff will ever be officially released since she has moved on past it all, but it would have been cool to see what well produced versions of those songs could have been like. There is like three albums worth of really good material out there. Its what's kept me going between Paradise and Ultraviolence. Assuming there is another album past UV, we are probably looking at 2016 for the next release. The time between UV and whatever comes next will be a very long wait.
