  1. Lana Del Ray was recorded six years ago, I don't see her going back to that sound. And I'm not against the kind of preview she did with Paradise, I was still pretty surprised when I listened to the full EP. And her keeping her "daddy" thing up would only make sense if she kept talking about her old boyfriends and I hope she's moved on from that.

  2. August or September 2011. Honestly, I don't see myself being a fan of hers forever. She's evolved musically but I don't feel like she's really grown much. I don't see a specific time when I'll stop liking her but I've already started listening to her less and less and unless Ultraviolence is really great, I'll probably get bored of her within the next few years. I mean, I'm still growing up and I'm already finding myself finding a lot of what she's done/written...questionable. Like, I can't see myself doing it, much less a 28 year old. I don't have specific examples right now but yeah, things about her I found really interesting 2 years ago just seem stupid to me now.

  3. I've been thinking about it... what's Lana's deal with singing national anthem?

I get it fits into her Americana theme....

I've always been curious about those lyrics:

Maybe we could go to Coney Island/Maybe I could sing the national anthem

    and, of course

    I sing the National Anthem/While I'm standing/Over your body/Hold you like a python...

I sorta get it, but at the same time - not.

What is the significance to her singing the national anthem (especially in Mermaid Motel)?

it's pretty meaningless in the context of those lyrics. i think it's just a part of her whole ~americana~ thing

  4. Was that the finale? I recently started watching Girls and idk it's all very underwhelming to me. The only ones I'm interested in are Jessa and Shoshanna and they're shown less than Lena Dunham's tits. I think Shoshanna's a really interesting character and I hope she's discussed more in the next season. Marnie's whole singing career story line is so fucking cringeworthy. If she got some more interesting scenes, Marnie could be interesting as well. And I think it's odd how Hannah seems to have career opportunities thrown at her regularly when all she does is really whine about her life and tell everyone they suck, it doesn't really make sense.

  5. first time i heard lana was when a friend of mine posted oh say can you see on facebook sometime in august or september 2011, then i heard video games and i liked it, some other unreleased songs that leaked/surfaced around that time and then she uploaded national anthem sometime in late 2011 and i rly liked that. i didn't listen to the album born to die in full till summer 2012 bc i didn't rly like it. i mainly listened to lana del ray, unreleased, video games and national anthem until then

  6. People are forgetting that it's not Lana who decides the release date. Tropico was a personal project for her, seemingly done independent of the label, that they promoted a little to boost sales for Paradise but that was it. The album is going to have a marketing strategy and campaign, singles being decided, promotion will be booked with TV appearances, and she may even still be recording some songs for it. If she said May 1st, then it's probably a tentative date and will probably come around around that time and in that quarter. Hopefully it won't be 4th quarter but it's going to come soon enough. Just be patient.

You know, I've wondered how the making of Tropico worked. I mean, I'm sure it cost quite a bit of money to make and then the premiere was free and I doubt the EP sold very well so how did she finance it?

  7. Weed is just as much of a drug as alcohol tbh There's over 100,000 deaths a year from Alcohol abuse, name one death from weed. Also weed is a natural plant where as Alcohol is a poison that shuts down different parts of the body creating the numb feeling of drunk.

And not everyone smokes it. I for one vaporize it so my lungs are not harmed. Alcohol harms your liver EVERY time.

Was this in response to my post? Because I never said anything against doing drugs but against drug culture. I don't care if you drink, smoke weed, do acid, smoke meth, do heroin or whatever you feel like, I just don't like it when people feel the need to tell everyone about it and feel so cool about it. I also think it's a bit odd how so many pot smokers feel so superior to people who do other, harder drugs but don't try to convince everyone around them that what they're doing is healthy and good and should be legalized.

  8. Why is this the "Best Of" and not a typical "Greatest Hits" album?
Well, I couldn't really do a "Greatest Hits" album." I'm an artist's artist, as they say. There's always a price to pay for that, less time on the radio or VH1. So, I mean, the downside is you're not a master. You're not a celebrity whose life is constantly hounded and revealed. But, on the other hand, I've been able to make the kind of records that I want to make. My fans are incredibly loyal all over the world. So, it's for them, the "Best Of" label. It's classier.

welp, he's just as if not even more pretentious than lana...

  9. that article doesn't sound like lana at all, she hasn't really shown much "savviness" in marketing. also "the artist feels there are compensation problems on streaming platforms" doesn't sound like lana at all, radiohead maybe idk, they've criticised it. ugh, tired of multi-millionaires complaining about normal people not spending all of their money on music

  10. I feel like we should use this section more, it could be interesting and we don't really have much Lana-related stuff to discuss at the moment.

AUSTIN, Texas -- A 21-year-old man from Killeen, Texas, is being held in connection with the deaths of two people at the South by Southwest festival, authorities said Thursday.

Rashad Charjuan Owens was taken into custody Thursday morning and will face two counts of capital murder and 23 counts of aggravated assault, according to a spokeswoman for the Austin Police Department.

The suspect was first identified by the American-Statesman newspaper in Austin.

Police are expected to issue a formal statement on the charges shortly, the spokeswoman said.

Earlier, Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said the man will be charged in the incident that began at about 12:30 a.m. with a police stop at a sobriety checkpoint. The car fled, eventually hitting a bicyclist and a passenger on a moped. Twenty-three people were injured and five remained in at least critical condition as of Thursday afternoon.

One of the dead has been identified as an Austin woman.

The bicyclist was identified as Steven Craenmehr, 35, of the Amsterdam-based music booking and promotion agency MassiveMusic.

The company released a statement on its website this morning that read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our close friend and colleague Steven Craenmehr, 35, on March 13th, 2014 at SXSW. During the 8 years that Steven worked for MassiveMusic, we got to know him as an unstoppable force, full of life, love and laughter.

"This is an irreplaceable loss for the MassiveMusic family and we are grateful for the years we spent with him. Our thoughts are with Steven's family and friends.”

At the intersection of 9th and Red River streets, the street is blocked to traffic but the festival vibe has returned to normal.

A Ray Ban promotional booth is giving free haircuts to a crowd of shaggy hipsters. Crowds are stretching around the block by the MTVU Festival tent a few steps away.

At the scene where 23 people were injured in the street last night, now stylish bicycles are again locked to racks and buckets of beer sit outside chilling in ice tubs for concertgoers. A line of Vespa scooters is parked just up the street. At Mohawk, the closest club to the incident, posters still advertise sets by ASAP Mob, Cloud Nothings and Speedy Ortiz, though the venue is closed and quiet.

The only memorial so far is a small cluster of flowers laid at a telephone pole in front of Mohawk, still in their store wrappers.

  11. Well, I thought the instrumentation on some songs was pretty good, catchy songs but a lot of the lyrics are still so juvenile. I also don't hear -that- much development from Light Me Up even though they've had four years. All in all, I thought it was an ok-good album, some songs were a lot weaker than others.

  12. The genre was intended to be less "wild" than rock music at the time,[4] and a less commercial, more serious and "mature" offshoot of the genre.[4] Baroque pop may be distinguished from progressive rock, which also uses classical instrumentation, by its generally simpler song structures closer to standard pop song writing, and also by its more mainstream lyrical content as opposed to the generally conceptual lyrics associated with later progressive rock.[5]

Baroque pop, stylistically, fuses elements of pop and rock with classical music, often incorporating instruments not common to popular music such as harpsichords, clavichordsviolinscellos and other stringsoboes and French horns. It is also generally characterised by highly orchestral,[4] lush instrumentation. Common elements of baroque pop also include layered melodies, sophisticated productions and prominent harmonies.[4] Traditionally, baroque pop is also generally quite melancholic and dramatic music,[4] which contrasts it from its more cheerful counterpart, sunshine pop.[5]

  13. I started queuing about 13 hours before the concert, at 6 am. I got to the very middle of the front row and was crushed the entire time. It's extremely uncomfortable, probably more uncomfortable than being punched and kicked occasionally at a punk show but it's worth it if you want to get something signed or just want to be close to Lana. If you're short and are a few rows back you might not see much. She was also like 1 1/2 hours late...
