I feel guilty for saying this but I might like Portals (as a whole) better than Ocean Blvd.

I could never love Melanie as much as Lana, and the songs that I do like on Ocean Blvd, I love way more than Portals. Portals just has no skips for me. I'm having issues connecting to some of Lana's new songs. Idk pls don't arrest me

While I totally feel you I don't see the comparison between both albums, they're quite different  and I'll admit I prefer Ocean by miles, but that doesn't imply I dislike Portals.

Portals has some great moments (I've grown to love Void, The Contortionist, Evil, Tunnel Vision and the three bonus so much, and Death, Light Shower, Battle of the Larynx and Womb are also great) but overall it's not as strong to me, maybe because, from the way the album was being described and promoted, I was expecting some conceptual shit that ended up not completely happening. However I compliment her progress since K-12 and After School, at least sonically and sometimes lyrically the album was several steps into the right direction (not you, Moon Cycle and Nymphology)  I need a full rock record Melanie, hoping MM4 is something like that and also that she throws away the character thingy and goes full personal for once. I'd love that so much.

Oh I fully agree with this. Lana's put out some great songs in recent years but I don't feel connected to her recent output like I am with her older music. But I'm a huge Melanie stan of all eras, so

Just saw her latest IG post and this "not like the other Earthlings" act is going to get old so fast, lol.

 

Echoing the sentiments about PORTALS being kind of all over the place, though. She needed to either commit to the theme 100% like Cry Baby/K-12, or lean fully into the personal elements and tone down the "past lives" storyline. If she would've taken more time during the writing process to blend the themes between the past lives/toxic relationships/moving on from her past, etc. Portals could've been a 10/10 for me.

 

I just feel like I'm getting 3 different albums when I listen to it, especially with the deluxe tracks.

I don't even feel guilty for thinking this. Portals is a bop with only one or two skips. 

This is the first time I have this opinion too, over Lana, so it's new to me too. I'm just accepting it

Imo she's officially gone across the border from "I am promoting mindfulness and self-awareness to my fans" to "I am a wellness guru, so take notes on how what i do is unrealistic and unattainable to you "

I'm sorry, I know she literally never said those words (I know I'm stretching) It's just the vibe I'm getting  she probably didnt mean it in that tone, and i bet it did inspire some fans, But it really is almost impossible for people under 21 to keep off the digital world 99% of the time (or ~ 10 minutes per day). Current schooling, work, and socialising demands it, and children and teens know nothing else these days.

Well, Portals has been out for 3 weeks and still no update on the vinyl or signed CD I pre-ordered in early March from her official store. Got yet another bland support response that answered nothing, but gave me a 15% off coupon for a future order… as if I’d place another.
