what’s a pre-release thread without the “is lana retiring after this album discourse” but i think if she ever does plan on retiring or taking a long hiatus, she would say something like “this will be my last album” or “this is going to be my last album for a while” in the announcement, i really don’t think she’s the kind of artist to just drop off the face of the earth without a goodbye. or at least not anymore
-
although me saying that Lana has become a better songwriter doesn’t have anything to do with her starting to collaborate with Jack, what we’re not gonna do is credit her own artistic growth and evolution in that way to a man
-
okay i should rephrase this with, “it’s become a lot more consistently insightful”. her songwriting has always been layered, but recently there have been many more songs on the albums that are so lyrically dense you really need to sit down and study to fully unpack
-
respectfully, lana does write much better lyrics now than she used to not that her writing has ever been bad whatsoever, but in recent years it’s become a lot more insightful and a lot more layered than it used to be, it’s on a whole new level. as much as i dislike BB sonically, the lyrics on especially the new tracks on that album are pure poetry, it’s understandable why a younger person might not relate to them and therefore will dislike them more than the words lana wrote in her 20s, but objectively it’s her best work

i really do wonder how different sky’s career would be today if she released Cry Baby in 2010. i honestly think think she would still be making the same Masochism now but in much better circumstances. again, i respect her artistic integrity, but what if she cooperated with them, even just for one era at the very beginning? if the album did well, she’s on capitol’s good side. if it flopped, well maybe we would still be in this exact situation, but also then Masochism would be the last album in her contract and the end would be in sight
-
i really do respect her artistic integrity, but yeah that’s just not how things work on a major label and it never has been unfortunately
-
although again, people attacking sky in her comments hasn’t accomplished anything in 8 years it just seems immature and unnecessary 😭

okay imo this really isn’t that hard to understand from capitol’s perspective and by “it’s about songs” surely they were talking about singles. imo Descending is a good single choice but also i kind of understand why it might not be that way from a major label exec pov. not to bring up halsey in here and start that discourse, but she’s the first example i can think of 🪦 halsey plays the major label game very well… she gives them good singles, even if they’re not necessarily good songs (like So Good and Closer), and in return they let her put out the albums she wants like IICHLIWP. sky just has to play the game, make a couple stand alone pop singles and get it over with. i think Capitol would be more excited and willing to promote something like that too possibly? idk
