A case study: Lanita in extreme metal communities

One topic i find incredibly interesting is when fans of an artist don’t fit the supposed “target demographic” of that artist. The target demographic of Lanas music tends to be boiled down to theys and gays, white girl music, etc. While that may very often be true, I think that narrowing Lanas appeal like that really sells her short. Really, anybody can listen to and become a fan of Lana. Anyone with functioning ears can listen to anything, rather it be pop, rap, country, metal, yodeling waltz polka, etc. It’s up to the individual to determine the meaning of any art via their interpretation. In essay terms, the listener determines their own logos, ecos and pathos for the music they hear. In Lana’s music i’ve found that she has fans in the most unlikely of places. The most bewildering (and often hilarious) example would be fans of Lana within the metal community. By metal, i don’t mean Linkin Park. I mean the loud angry screaming bands in the genres of black metal, death metal, grindcore. Quite possibly the most sonically opposed sounding music compared to Lanas. I’ve seen a few fans of Lana in these communities. Some examples:

“Myke C-Town” is a popular youtuber who has collaborated with big channels TheNeedleDrop and Dead End Hiphop. He has a music channel where he mainly talks about extreme metal. He is a fan of Lanas music and has regarded it well in his reviews. In His In his Top Albums of 2019 video he ranked NFR the 13th best album of the year:

He also has Ocean Blvd in his 2023 video.

Extreme metal youtuber “CountBlagorath” is relatively popular in the underground scene. He mainly post vinyl collection updates. In one vinyl updates, he shows off Lana records and give an explanation as to liking her music. Skip to 12:30 to hear him talk about Lana, unless you want to hear him talk about GOAT SEMEN for ten minutes

Musician Stéphane “Niege” Paut, most well known for his project Alcest (which i talked about on the page before) said in instagram comments that he listens to and likes Lana. I can’t find it anywhere, but I remember seeing it.

Speaking of instagram, the instagram page for Profound Lore Records, an extreme metal label, follows Lana on instagram. They occasionally comment on her posts, and when they do they get about 10-15 likes :thumb3:. That shows at least some overlap between the communities.

I know theirs plenty of other examples oht their, but those are the ones i can think of. Speaking from personal experience, I myself would fit this description as well. Lana is the only pop artist i really like. I’ve heard and dabbled into others, but Lana is only one I can truly say i’m a fan of. If i told people in the metal community i’m a fan of Lana, they would probably look at me like i’m a looney toon. Same thing vice versa, i’d imagine most Lana fans would cover their ears hearing most of my favorite music :thumb:

  5. Courtney Love feeling vindicated I fear..... Ultra Common Courtney W.... taylor take a few years off from over exposure and the overculture...... you don't have to be a poet.....ypu can go back to making the music everyone loves from you..... she really wants to be lana so bad but lana works because she's just being herself.....also she should have told her mob to leave Joe alone most of this album isn't even about him.....

Oooo that’d be cool, also apologies about what I said about Courtney in my former post. I had typed something out then when I was trying to edit it it posted. 😭

lol i didn't even see it lmao.... Back on topic I think Lasso will be a very 1970's album in both aesthetic and sonically. So look at both the popular country music of that era but also the regular pop culture for insight to what Lana's going for. I've been feeling 70's revival in the zeitgeist since 2022 and I feel it very strongly in this album. I feel folk western blues and jazz more in this album than country.....but country doesn't feel wrong per say. It IS country it's just a throwback. Lana said Make Country Music Great Again.     It is what country music used to be. So who knows if the country music GP will like it or not. It could really swing massively in either direction. This could be her biggest album since BTD or an absolute train wreck. I'm so excited.

    She unstanned?

not entirely. She still has a lot of nice things to say about her in Courtney Love's Women. She was asked about Taylor Swift and thrashed her for being "meaningless". She also mentioned that she hasn't liked lana's music since hearing her John Denver cover but also said part of the reason she took a break from lana's music is that it was too influential for her, changing her own sound too much (as she is currently recording an album I could see that being an issue). So while I wouldn't call it a nothingburger I would still say the media has blown it out of proportion. I do think it'll be funny to see all the swifties become kurt truthers because she dared say the sun doesn't shine out of taylor swift's derriere.  Courtney also didn't care for Bored Bannisters so its possible it's just a phase and she'll be comparing her to The Beatles again in like 6 months. When you stan a mad poetess anything is possible.
