Your Girl Lana

Next To Me

Recommended Posts

Another day is over, another day is done
And now I'm getting closer to the rising sun

Hey there, what you doing?
Would you like a little company?
Hey man, how you doing?
Would you like to sit next to me?

Another day is over, another day is done
Another night I'm waiting, waiting for the sun

Hey there, what you doing?
Would you like a little company?
Hey man, how you doing?
Would you like to sit next to me?

"Well, I don't know, little lady,
You're awfully pretty, but I'm a nice man,
I live a nice life, I have a nice house, I have a great wife
And I'm tired of making decisions without thinking."

Another moon is shining, another evening come
Another hour unwinding till the night is done

Hey man, what you doing?
Would you like a little company?
Hey there, how are you doing?
Would you like to sit next to me?

Next to me, next to me...

This song describes a fateful encounter, it is a biographical piece about Lana's teenage days.

Another day is over, another day is done
And now I'm getting closer to the rising sun

She sets the tone of the song, it's sundown, tomorrow is coming, and she is walking home from somewhere, most likely school, hence the "another day" repetition, suggesting that most of her days are the same old same old.

Hey there, what you doing?
Would you like a little company?
Hey man, how you doing?
Would you like to sit next to me?

Lana loves to watch nature, the sunset. She sits down at a bench in a public setting, and dreams of having company, a mature older figure she can share the moment with. She asks "would you like a little company" as an invitation, but in reality it is her who would like a little company, she wants someone to be there with her. She wants to reach out.

Another day is over, another day is done
Another night I'm waiting, waiting for the sun

Once again, Lana has went through her daily routine. She is sitting somewhere outside looking at nature.

Hey there, what you doing?
Would you like a little company?
Hey man, how you doing?
Would you like to sit next to me?

Now someone actually comes by, and she feels encouraged to invite the man to sit next to her, wishing for company.

"Well, I don't know, little lady,
You're awfully pretty, but I'm a nice man,
I live a nice life, I have a nice house, I have a great wife
And I'm tired of making decisions without thinking."

The guy is vary of accepting her invitation, worrying that it might lead to some things that should not happen. And so, he declines her and walks away.

Another moon is shining, another evening come
Another hour unwinding till the night is done

Another day, Lana is at her usual place again, doing what she always does. And dreaming.

Hey man, what you doing?
Would you like a little company?
Hey there, how are you doing?
Would you like to sit next to me?

She fantasizes about the man she saw earlier, the one that caught her eye. She wishes she could make him be there with her.

Next to me, next to me...

Next to me, next to me....overall, this song expresses a deep longing for companionship, she is obviously alone and lonely, she really wants to connect with a person on her level. And this song is a memory to all that.

I 100% thought this was about sex work when first reading these, especially the waiting for the sun (more night time work). She’s propositioning married men for sex night after night. Or whoever she’s narrating as. Who knows tho

This is one of my all time favorite Lana songs, The melody is so good and the lyrics make me feel connected to her on a different level than some of her others.
