Taking this platform and moment to say BTD aged terribly and anyone not ranking it second last (LFL is obviously unlistenable) or wasn’t alive when it came out cause it was a cute moment then but that sound is long dead, she moved so past that. Happy to help you all figure that out if you need more info!

BTD is a timeless trendsetting album just like Tunnel will be 🥰

Fingertips track by track review for @Jeanne Dielman, @DCooper, and whoever else asked (I'm taking a break from this forum after reading some of the most braindead & hypocritical shit takes I've ever read on this forum)

    1. The Grants

I wasn't really the biggest fan of this track when it first came out. It didn't really hit me in the same way as the other two pre-release singles, and definitely felt a little short. However, in context of the album, it flourishes. Super essential opening track and gently guides us through the incoming themes of the record.

7.5 on first listen, 9 after the album leaked.

    2. Did you know that there's a tunnel under ocean blvd?

One of my favorite tracks from LDR. Lyrically, a highlight in her career. The build up at the end is still mindblowing.

    10/10

    3. Sweet

One of the tracks that needs reparations from the insider's opinions. Much deeper and more complex than the simple and surface level "love song." Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful and definitely not inconsequential

    9/10

    4. A&W

Everyone knows that I wasn't the biggest cheerleader for this song when it dropped, but it truly is an excellent track and works even better in context.

    10/10

    8. Kintsugi

Second track that needs reparations from BoZo and frenemy @111 Stunning, strange, and definitely one of my favorites. Might be the slowest track in Lana's released catalog, but for that, I appreciate it and find the emotional payoff to be worth it

    10/10

    9. Fingertips

What can I say that I haven't already? Devastating and beyond gorgeous. Never heard a Lana track like this before. Very Tori/Fiona/Kate Bush.

    10/10

    10. Paris, Texas

My least favorite song on the album. It's very good, don't get me wrong, but definitely not my cup of tea.

    7.5/10

    11. Grandfather...

RIOPY's description of this song feeling like the sea, and seeing the "liquid blue" of the ocean is so accurate. Sings her heart out over a very nautical soundscape and the lyrics are extremely beautiful. The older and wiser brother to Mariners Apartment Complex.

    10/10

    12. Let the Light In

If someone told me this was a remastered outtake from Ultraviolence, I would believe you. What a phenomenal, bluesy/country twanged track that reminds me a little bit of a more complex IYLDWM. Father John Misty and Lana are musical soulmates, they sound beautiful together.

    10/10

    13. Margaret

Really sweet song, but I don't have much to say about it. Jack sounds very much like Bon Iver on this song. The "rom com" description of the song from Rolling Stone was pretty accurate for sure. I respect it!

    8/10

    14. Fishtail

HOLY MOLY. The braindead opinions about this song are why I'm taking a step back from this forum, but this is the collapse of the century. One of her greatest midtempo sultry songs to date. Black Bathing Suit and Tulsa had a beautiful baby. This is the song for the girls who get it.

    10/10

    15. Peppers

Super, super, super crazy track. I never expected something like this from Lana, although it does echo some of her pre-BTD unreleased. Definitely a bop for the Geminis in the room who love the chaos!

    9/10

    16. Taco Truck x VB

I don't have much to say about this one, either. It's pretty good and I love the transition to VB.
    8/10

    Another valid rating

    Judah Smith Interlude:

When we got the description of the song as Lana laughing over Judah's sermon I guess I was expecting her to be like cackling over an ominous sermon with creepy instruments (a la Season of the Witch maybe) but I was somehow wrong about all three. Anyways I don't even know what he was saying

    Kintsugi:

A portion of this sounded like Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. And she kinda spilled some whiny Lizzy vocals and I just :lange:

    Paris, Texas:

This song reminded me of Fordham Road somehow which I don't think I would have ever expected but holy fuck. And yesss I'm totally getting the Coraline vibes wow

    Grandfather...:

More May Jailer vibes wtf is going on hereee

    Margaret:

Jack was giving a bit of Springsteen which was pretty slay/offbeat. Also the party is December 18th :true:

    Fishtail:

PALM TREES IN BLACK AND WHITE! :read:Also this particular song has made me realize something that I'm gonna put in my closing statement...

    Peppers:

This one is giving Happiness is a butterfly for sureee. This one is insane. I can't believe she made a song like this I love her

    Taco Truck x VB:

Back in 2019 before we got the NFR tracklist I guessed that Venice Bitch would be the closer on the album. Somehow I got that part right -- just 4 years later and on a different album!

    Closing statement:

      Reveal hidden contents

I am really, really getting a mixtape vibe off of this album. The multiple samples, including of herself... especially how she uses the same phrases (When you know, you know; braids, etc). It is such a chaotic album but it also feels so organized. I'm biting my tongue to tell more in depth opinions but I don't want to get ahead of myself. I need to expose myself to these songs for a bit first

This ended up being a long post so I put it in a spoiler!

    Spoiler

Saying grandfather is giving may jailer and peppers giving Happiness is a butterfly is definitely one of the craziest takes i’ve heard i think you need more time with it for sure 😭

    Thoughts on each track:

The Grants: Stunning opener. Loooove the gospel singers' contribution to this song. They bring this song to life. To all Apple Music users, I highly recommend the Dolby Atmos mix.

Tunnel: A very important song for this album lyrically. A central piece. Sonically it isn't as exciting to me but I do really like it.

Sweet: Cute! At the bottom of my ranking but it's cute!

A&W: Song of the year. One of my fav LDR songs. Gorgeous, stunning, world changing, earth shattering, etc etc. What more can I say. One of her best.

    Judah Smith Interlude: SKIP!

Jon Batiste Interlude: I actually really love this interlude. It's pretty long for an interlude but does not feel that way. I can't wait to listen to this following Candy Necklace.

Kintsugi: Gorgeous song, but I wish it sounded less muffled.

Fingertips: This song left me in shambles. I've never had a Lana song hit me as hard as this one. There's something very special about this song. One of my favs off the album. Beautiful song.

Paris, Texas: This song is so simple but effective. It feels like a transition song instead of a full moment, and I absolutely love it for it. It does exactly what it needs to do. It sounds like it belongs in an oscar nominated movies about scandinavian homosexuals living by a lake or whatever.

Grandfather: Absolutely showstopping. The way this song builds up and explodes... Wow.

Let The Light In: This feels so different for Lana. This song gives such a nostalgic feel. FJM and Lana sound so good together. This song sounds like it should win a grammy, like, it's giving grammy winning song. Amazing production too. Drew Erickson we like you! Obsessed with the part where she mimics the melody of Love Song.

Margaret: I don't get the hate for this song, it's one of my favs tbh bshdfb. It's such a sweet song. It's kinda giving Taylor but in a good way. I also don't mind Jack's voice on this song. He sounds kinda good tbh! Love the spoken bits too, gives the song character.

Fishtail: But wow what a moment... The Cinnamon Girl / TJF of the album. Need I say more? This song will be on heavy rotation for me.

Peppers: Obsessed with this song it's so fun omg. I wish the Tommy Genesis sample was louder and more prominent but whatever this song's So iconic it's probs gonna be one of my most replayed songs off the album. WIPEOUT! She ate.

Taco Truck x VB: She's kinda crazy for this. "Signing off bang bang kiss kiss" was destined to be an album closing lyric, it feels very correct. I wish the first part was a full song it sounds SO good but I'm absolutely obsessed with this version of Venice Bitch they put in there. One of my fav songs getting new life on this album. I love a tacky beat idc idc! And Jack Antonoff does tacky beats well (HTD one of my fav NFR songs).

again, you’re missing my point. it has nothing to do with structure. it’s strictly the mixing and production of the vocals. listen to the “red flags green” line in fishtails and it’s so jarring. i actually love the melodies of the last three songs but the way her vocals are mixed just sticks out (besides the taco section)

    Spoiler

That was exactly my point like not everything has to sound polished i love how wild all 3 tracks are it’s very intentional and very Lana. They are just fun tracks that will capture this summer beautifully and i think that they will grow on you because it’s truly some of her best work.

why’re you acting like this is the only album where she has hot and sexy songs?? her previous albums did not have this issue which is why hearing it on her newest is disappointing

    Spoiler

It’s the future of music. Perfect imperfections they are raw and a fucking vibe

it seems boring if you start to critic music too much wanting it to be super structured like these work and are amazing…but everyone has different opinions obviously
