I don’t try to cancel her for anything. I love Lana but equally she’s a human being and human beings are flawed. I think it’s healthy to accept that and I don’t understand why you’re trying to shut me down for simply voicing I don’t agree with her on things. Such a toxic response ugh

I didn’t call anyone dumb. I said Lana’s posts are dumb which is my opinion and I’m entitled to having it and sharing it. I did say she sounds uneducated about many issues in terms of race/inequality and it has sadly shown in her posts a lot lately. I love her artistry but that won’t stop me from holding her accountable when she posts stupid stuff. I would expect the same from my friends if I did the same thing. It’s all about growing and becoming a more aware person at the end of the day. And the monarchy IS a problematic institution: institutionally racist, misogynistic and classist. So I’m not going to sit there quietly and say Lana’s post was great when it was glamorising two people who are the faces of it.

There is no controversy here. I guess it just confirms one more time how uneducated Lana is. Looking up to the monarchy is problematic in my opinion because it is a disturbing institution/cult sunk in white supremacy and British classism at its worst. But what did we expect? Lana is just not that woke person and she does not sit with where I’m at politically/ethically. I think she just doesn’t know much. Once again, happy to be here for the music but it doesn’t go beyond for me anymore because I know her posts are getting dumber and dumber. I think it’s just ignorance. They see it as Hollywood glamour when really it’s just a cult.

Yeah I agree with what you’re saying. Like you said she was quiet about political issues for a long time and that was in her interest. I was happy that she was here for the music (which she’s amazing at) and that’s it. I’m not here for my favourite singers starting to talk about politics cause that’s often when they get problematic. I kind of respected her and liked her because of how honest her lyrics were regarding her experiences of abuse especially during ultraviolence. I never thought she was necessarily glamorising these issues. She made sadness an acceptable and powerful topic to talk about and normalised it in her songwriting in beautiful ways. You’re absolutely right when saying that she has done cultural appropriation before (the Native American head dress in the Ride video is the one I can mostly remember). It’s a shame she gets so defensive about everything on social media. Instead of posting some of the great reviews which have come out in the last few days about the album (and again the vast majority of them are praising it so much) she chooses once again to focus on the negative. She just needs to keep talking about her sad melancholic glamorous life in her songs and stop engaging with the critics in the way that she does. And also listen to POC saying they got offended by some of her comments.

I don’t agree with some of the points made in the Harper’s bazaar article especially about cultural appropriation. I’ve always had pride in Lana for not going down the road of cultural appropriation, at least not as much as a lot of her peers. In my opinion, Lana only started becoming problematic when she posted the question for the culture post and since then she has become completely ridiculous on Instagram. It’s a shame because most of her previous political comments prior to that had made her “clean” in my opinion. Now it’s all just a mess. I’m still here for the music but that’s it.

Lana does not have a bad album and I have the feeling this will be critically acclaimed again. I love everything on the album except the duets which kill the vibe. Hence why anything past Yosemite makes it hard to keep listening. I would also give it 4 stars if I was a reviewer. I think NFR was slightly stronger as an album even on the lyrical side.

I know we have been through a lot in terms of disappointing dates and delays for the album release. But in a way, it’s kind of exciting she hasn’t released WD yet. By this point, it might be even better if she didn’t release any single before the album so we can just appreciate all the new tracks at once.

What does it mean to be inclusive to you ? I just wonder because to me it links to issues of race and racial justice and I could never personally say that there’s no work for me to do on it. Like Lana claims, a lot of my friends are black. Some of them are Muslim but that’s not a good enough reason to say I don’t need to work on my inclusivity. The whole western society was brought up on the idea that whiteness is the default and everyone has biases they need to work on. By claiming defensively that she doesn’t need to work on her inclusivity, I feel like she’s failing to recognise that it’s everybody ‘s job (society as a whole) to do so. That doesn’t mean she’s racist or means badly. But just that she’s not recognising she is also indirectly part of the wider problem. All white people are to some extent.

I’ve been digesting all the controversy surrounding Lana the last couple days. But I will say this. The one thing that shocked me the most with Lana ‘s arguments is that she implied that « inclusivity » is not an issue she needs to work on. That is a very tone deaf thing to say, especially in 2021 when conversations on racial equality are finally wide open on the table. I think that just tells us everything we need to know about her ignorance. When it comes to her defending her upbringing, I don’t mind her defending a possibly difficult childhood. I mean I don’t know her personally so I can’t comment on that. But that’s beside the point and doesn’t cancel the comments she made on her Instagram. Also I’ve noticed her « I have black friends » comment on Instagram has now been deleted. I wonder if she realised it was terribly worded out of her team did and asked her to remove it? Luckily the album doesn’t come out till mid March so I’m just hoping she’ll learn during that time and come forward with a statement clarifying her intentions whilst also acknowledging she fucked up and was insensitive.

“I got a lot of issues but inclusivity ain’t one of them” no it’s fine because she has had rapper boyfriends (whatever that means) and she tagged all the people of colour present in her friendship photo. The whole thing is unbelievable and the fact that she gets so defensive plays against her. I think she takes it too much to heart (I mean being called a racist publicly is never fun) but even then people were ready to still give her a chance. She sounded traumatised by the whole situation in that interview and I thought to myself “gosh there’s so much to unpack here “. Like I said I’m not here to fix lana but most of my friends are actually POC and I would always tell them how great of an artist she is. Now I will listen to her in my bedroom with my headphones on as it’s too embarrassing and I would feel complicit stanning her. I think she’s gone a bit mad. Also in the context of 2020, George Floyd and anti racism, I can’t just sit there and pretend that shit isn’t real just because Lana is acting completely ignorant and making the worst micro agressions any artist has made in the past year. Imagine stanning her as black person and listening to her talk shit like that? Even worse and thank God I’m not in that position.

To me this has become such a bittersweet release. The new song is so beautiful and the video is some of her best work. But despite her good intentions, Lana sounded so problematic in that interview and I don’t think we should support any of what she said simply because we are fans. I’ve been trying to find excuses for her after her post for the culture but now she’s drifted too far and I feel like I would be lying to myself as a human if I wasn’t calling her out on it. There might be reasons for the way she spoke (she sounded very disjointed, confused and insecure) and I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re linked to poor mental health. But equally she has a massive platform and some of the stuff she says is deeply offensive and tone deaf. How could she claim that she thinks Trump is not aware that people were going to storm the capitol ? It just sounds like she’s been hiding in a cave for the last 5 years. Also claiming that Trump is insane and that’s why he’s acting that way... when really she should call him out for what he is : a fascist. I’m extremely disappointed BUT artists and celebrities are human. Humans are problematic. So I’m going to choose to keep listening to her music as it’s a work of art but I won’t follow her so closely anymore because it has actually brought my mood down tonight.
