  1. Just tried Ben Mawson. It gave me Justin Bieber's Manager, The Strokes' manager and Cody Simpson's Manager before it gave up. Apparently, Ben has never been played before, so I added him to the queue. There was also a line of questioning that went like this:

You have no clue how much I wanted to answer 'Yes' to that.

Well, damn. I played 4 or 5 times (3 attempts per game) and I never got him. :(

  2. I think America's culture is pretty much pop culture. Before that, it's just a development of other cultures that had stuff to do with 'Merica.

What do you mean, it's pretty much pop culture? Sure, it's not as old as that of many other countries and it's more of a melting pot that in most places, but it's still a very particular culture with unique traditions and mentality that go way beyond pop culture...

  3. That's still your opinion though, there are no stone-written facts about how and why she sells well in Europe. You also don't know the ratio between who are pro and anti Americanism either.

Well, of course it's my opinion, that pretty much goes without saying. And no, I don't have any statistics, if that's what you mean, but I do live here and, you know, talk to people about stuff and listen to them talk back. And I can tell you that, even though Anti-Americanism isn't what it used to be during the Bush administration, it's still pretty high.

I feel that I have touched a sensitive spot. Is this, like, taboo here? :smokes:

I think you're mixing being bitter and not wanting to risk another "failure" + the subsequent backlash with not loving the US, or not considering it her home, or not being a huge part of what influences her anymore. I think that is precisely what made her so bitter - unrequited love.

I guess that her reception at Lollapalooza (by public and media/critics alike) could very well determine whether she'll do a US tour in the near future or not... We'll see.

Also, Germany made David Hasselhoff a big pop star - not Europe! :biblio:

  5. I doubt she doesn't care about the US anymore. It's her home country and she isn't Gwyneth Paltrow. Given how she wraps herself in the American Flag and the American iconography of her photos and video shoots is why she sells well in Europe, she do a US tour soon. I suspect in support of her next album she'll do a US tour. Sure she may not sell out the Staples Center but she'll have a great tour in the US. I suspect she's building buzz and anticipation which is good.

Judging from a few things she's recently said, she's at the very least kinda bitter at the USA. And with good reason, if you ask me. She was mercilessly and, for the most part, stupidly attacked there. We all know she needs to feel adored and doesn't deal very well with negative criticism; I guess now we'll also find out whether she holds a grudge for a long time or not.

I also wouldn't say that's the main reason she sells well here - you wouldn't believe how much anti-Americanism there is in Europe. When she appeared she was very different from pretty much everything else in the pop scene, and we really didn't give a fuck about the authenticity / inauthenticity debate & the lip controversy (feels really silly just writing this...). Her music had an interesting dark, vintage-y mood and vivid imagery, and her image fit very well into that. That's what made her a huge hit here.

    and she isn't Gwyneth Paltrow

Dating a British musician? Check. ;)

  6. She's great. Not only do I love Grimes, the artist, but I really like Claire, the person. Her interviews are always so much fun, plus I love her attitude towards life and respect most of her opinions on social issues.

Anyway, much as I love her 3 albums, the first thing I ever listened to was Darkbloom so that holds a special place in my heart (ew, how sappy) and Vanessa is still one of my favourite songs. Particularly love this performance:

And Oblivion really broke my heart when I finally found out what it was about, and made me admire her even more.

  7. At the moment I'm reading Neuromancer by William Gibson. Literary sci-fi isn't really my thing but I love cyberpunk (in film, anyway) and so many people had recommended this book to me over the years that I ended up buying it. I'm about halfway through so far and I'm really liking it!

  8. How did Lana and Jaime become friends? I love Jaime as an actress and model so much I was really excited when I found out they were friends.

She talks about that in this interview - Channel V at Splendour in the Grass

She basically says she met Jamie and her husband (who's a director) in California when she was singing at a hotel; Jamie told her she loved her album and then they eventually became friends. Months later all 3 decided to do the video for Summertime Sadness together.

  9. :gclap:

A job well done. Extra points for your use of legit. You should have also included the non-literal use of literally (“I’m literally dying right now watching this flawless video.”) What about the fragment “I can’t even”? And the puzzling, nonsensical use of though, shortened to tho, which doesn’t actually qualify anything. We will know just how flawless this video and Lana are when we come upon “I can’t even tho.” omg but NO wait like she was so beautiful and glamorous and classy and old hollywood in young & beautiful and now she’s a fat stripper omg i just dgi

I tried my best, okay? :defeated:

  10. I personally don't like calling others ugly, he may be a really nice guy. Lana seems to like him. Like someone said on here, I'm sure a lot people on here wouldn't like if someone said 'whats wrong with their face/nose' like that so publicly. Maybe I'm too "PC" then if I don't like calling others ugly. Maybe others don't understand how damaging that word is for others; especially for people who are albino/minorities.

    :(

Ofc I'm not trying to be mean, it's all your opinions. It just also seems hypocritical to me as a lot of you are angry and annoyed at people calling Lana fat but are calling that random guy ugly.

All I can do is assure I wasn't one of those. I call them as I see them and I hate political correctness; that's just me.

I also don't get why criticising someone's appearance is so much worse than criticising someone's personality and/or attitudes - and that is frequently done here. A really shallow society we live in, that puts physical appearance above everything else while claiming to do otherwise ("beauty comes from the inside", "appearance doesn't matter", etc.).

  11.

The internet is not destroying the element of surprise enough, we need more. Where’s the video treatment and the storyboards? Fuck it, can we get some of the dailies? This guessing game is not going to cut it. I need to put my Google glasses on and activate the internet chip underneath my skin.

Also, just a heads up here. If you want to make some extra cash, listen up, i’m feeling philanthropic. I will be giving out $100 to each and every forum member who, upon this video being released in its final form, refrains from making a post about how:

    -The video is flawless.

    -The video is epic.

-The video is the most (anything) you’ve ever seen in your entire life.

    -You are dying.

    -You are are crying.

    -You can’t breathe.

    -You have been slayed.

-You need someone to hold you.

    -Lana looks flawless.

    -Lana looks perfect.

    -Lana looks fat.

    -Lana needs to lose weight.

-Lana needs to tone her abs.

-Stripping represents the loss of innocence.

OMG. And Lana slays me once again! This video will be flawless, I just know it. I'm sure it will be as epic as Ride and National Anthem, it will legit be the most amazing thing I have ever seen in my life. Like, OMG, I am dying here. I'm crying so hard right now that I actually can't breathe, can't someone please hold me?! To all of you making mean comments about goddess Lana: she's flawless!!! Sure, she's just a wee bit fat and should probably lose a bit of weight and maybe tone her abs - but she's still perfect regardless! (Oh, btw, does anyone else think the whole stripping / go-go dancing thing could represent the loss of innocence? You know, the angel looking to get fucked hard and all that? Makes sense, right?!)

    Whatever, I'm rich. :smokes3:

  12. I love him, been listening to him for years now...

I think he needs to polish his sound a little bit, but he's amazing...

The lyrics really show how he has crossed ways with hurt...

I hope not, to be honest... I think it really adds to that fragile and intimate (almost diary-like) quality of his music.

  13. Welcome child.

OMG a fan prior to this thread, how cool! Yes, I think "Hood" is my favorite as well, it's just too short. Case with most of his songs--like he's getting too emotional so he has to make every song 2 minutes or something :P He has so much sadness even in his love songs. I swear, "Dark Parts" has brought me to tears before. I think the second album is the best, have you heard Learning?

I've cried a couple of times while listening to that album, I'm not even ashamed to admit it. Have you ever seen him live? I'm not gonna lie, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't make it through one of his live shows without crying. His music is just so intimate, and sad, and delicate...

Yeah, I've heard it. I prefer the second one as well, but Learning was really haunting too (although so, so short!). I only listened to it after Put Ur Back N 2 It though - I was so mindblown with it, it was hard to top that!

  14. Not directed at you, but just a general statement: I don't know why people always use that photo to show how ~full-figured~ Marilyn was. She was pregnant in that photo. Besides, she was a petite woman in reality. :creep:

Also, not here for the Blue Jeans hate.  :(  :ohno:  :defeated:

Marilyn's weight also fluctuated A LOT. At time she had a fuller figure (as in the previous picture), sometimes rather thin (as in mine) - like so many women.
