  1. Oh yay, I was looking for this!

The way I finally got into this show was kinda weird... At first I basically refused to watch it because ~hype (I know, I know), then I watched the pilot and didn't really like it / found the dialogue forced and try-hard, but then (I don't even remember why) decided to give it another chance and loved it. I'm halfway through season 2 at the moment.

I read somewhere that the way people relate to / prefer some characters over others / absolutely can't stand this or that person can almost read as a Rorschach test; I don't know if that's true or not but it kinda made sense to me...

I LOVE Jessa. Not in a "OMG she's such a free spirit, I relate to her sfm!!!" way, of course; I'm nothing like her and can definitely see how flawed she is, but I love her. Marnie irritates me most of the time and Hannah has her moments but is mostly an unlikeable character to me (interestingly, if I had to define myself using Girls' characters, I'd say I'm a mix of Marnie + Hannah :ohno: with a few Jessa elements thrown in for good measure). Soshanna is annoying but endearing at the same time. And I really like Adam; he's fucking crazy but so vulnerable.

And this is for sure one of my fave scenes from the show:

    girls-new-women-telling-other-women.gif?

I wish some of the more aggressive & borderline condescending feminists had this in mind more often...

  2. I second the gerbil one, that was my first thought.

Also, rumours involving Hayden Panettiere, Diana Jenkins and a Hollywood prostitution circle. Also, child abuse allegations. A complete mess.

Oh, and the one that said Jules Casablancas and Courtney Love had had a one night stand LMAO - in this story, Meet me in the bathroom was supposedly about her & But Julian, I'm a little bit older than you was her response.

  3. Ok, let's see...

    Future Trends (synthpop, electronic)

This is one of the few albums I've ever found that has a somewhat similar vibe to 'Is This It'...

Topaz Rags (psychedelic, experimental, new weird america - but nevermind the labels, this is the perfect description of their music)

One of my fave music finds ever, but judging from my friends' reactions it's probably not for everyone. :smh:

  4. Hannah+Cohen+hannahcohen.jpg

"Hannah Cohen, born in San Francisco in 1986, left home as a teenager, soon finding herself in New York and becoming over the next few years something of a muse to the city's art scene, posing for Richard Prince, Terry Richardson, David Salle, Will Cotton, and Ryan McGinley.

Hannah also immersed herself in New York's music scene, working at the Village Vanguard, and privately she started teaching herself guitar and writing songs.

Hannah's debut record, Child Bride (2012), was produced by Thomas Bartlett, aka Doveman, known for his keyboard work with artists like The National, Martha Wainwright, and Antony and the Johnsons, and also producer of upcoming records by Glen Hansard and Julia Stone. The core band is a small group of some of New York musicians.

About her inspirations, she says: "For the past five years I have been mostly listening to Brazilian vinyl from the 60s and 70s. The classics like Caetano Veloso—his record Jóia is an absolute favorite of mine.""

    ---

Yeah, I know what you're thinking - " Yet another model turned singer. Right. *roll eyes* ".

Well, what can I tell you. I completely fell in love with her voice and beautiful & incredibly melancholic songs. She's been described as "Lana Del Rey without all the Hollywood", and I can kinda see why; if I had to describe her album in 2 words I'd say "summertime sadness", for sure. I think she's quite special and definitely worth checking out. Sadly, her début album seems to have mostly passed under the radar...

Here are two of her official (and always gorgeous) music videos:

And here is a live performance of my favourite song from the album:

  5. I think you guys are just really over thinking that ice line. Have you ever heard the The Beatles' song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"? Well "ice" is a slang term for diamond jewelry, and it's used in a lot of rap songs (see Icy by Gucci Mane). My guess is that that's probably as complicated as it gets.

Like I said, given the other verses I still think it could easily be a double entendre. OR. I could just be giving her lyrical depth too much credit. :hooker:

  6. I had the privilege to attend the last show of the paradise tour. The most memorable moment of the evening was when the so called "submissive" Lana Del Rey yelled in in the mic : " Turn me up, and turn that down", in the middle of a song. I thought the roof of the stadium was going to lift. No doubt who's in charge.

Just out of curiosity, what was "that"? What did she want to turn down? :D

  7. I hear:

    "my better lines"

"like dynamite" (not 100% sure on this one because I hear an 's' sound at the end)

definitely "MTV" (which also kinda makes sense given "Swingin' in New York to Nirvana songs / With nothin' but that t-t-television on" - Nirvana MTV Unplugged in NYC?)

"Brooklyn Corleone" (EDIT - agree with @@evilentity on this one, it's "quoting".)

"tried hard to find a cure"

  8. But couldnt it be her describing paradise? with ice? And shes tried to find a cure to not feel pain about her loss? Or maybe shes found the cure and its "ice"(ofc its a wrong "cure")? idk

I don't know... What you said about the 'cure' being 'ice' (and simultaneously being 'wrong') kinda makes sense, but I personally don't think this song's deals with pain all that much... The only darker / more pessimistic lines are "The future's lookin' bright as black tonight / You tell me that our love cannot endure" and everything else is basically a description of happy times & her notion of paradise - with him in his bedroom, watching TV (and maybe doing drugs?).

But I could be completely wrong...

  9. "Lucy's in the sky with ice tonight," Does she reffer to her dead friend? from Summertime Sadness?

I think it's just a reference to doing drugs...

Lucy's in the sky with ice tonight,
Heaven knows I've tried to find a cure.
Baby, if it's wrong I don't wanna be right,
And if you ask again, I'll say "I'm sure."

The "Lucy's in the sky" reference doesn't really need any explaining, "ice" is slang for meth, "tried to find a cure" could mean 'tried to get clean', "and if you ask again, I'll say 'I'm sure'" could mean that the guy she's with is asking her something like 'are you really sure you want to do this?' to which she says 'yes, I'm sure'.

EDIT: re: "ice" - as everyone knows, the original song goes "Lucy in the sky with diamonds"; 'ice' can simultaneously mean 'expensive jewlery, diamonds' as well as the above-mentioned drug slang. It could be an intentional play with words / double meanings.

Another K-themed song, I'd assume? With all the mafia references and whatnot...
