Tbh releasing some of her best songs in her career then taking forever to release the album is actually wise from a streaming perspective. Her already released singles have almost a cult following around them and the streams keep getting higher. Once she releases her album, those streams transfer over. Maybe it’s a loophole to release music different from the mainstream. Take longer to get the streams higher so the record label is satisfied and lets her keep doing her own thing. Might not be her specific plan, but it could be a bonus for her.

I meant the more recent ones like In your car and be stronger, by the ones from last fall when she released the singles. Like idk the be stronger video especially she doesn’t look like she’s in a promo mood.

Ok this might sound stupid but what if the snippets were never specifically for us or to tease the album? This sounds a little middle school, but what if she posted the snippets to share how she was feeling and to communicate with Chase? like we don’t know how good they are at communicating. I know it’s be inconsiderate to us, but idk maybe she’s hung up on her relationship atm. People do it all the time with songs by other people so why not with her own? Idk maybe I’m starting to sound crazy with this.

I always got the impression it was about Barrie. Doesn’t he have like a white mustang fender guitar or something? And his record dropped during the time Lana was writing LFL. Never heard the G-Eazy theory for that song lol. But really who knows haha.

Like everyone, she has crises and hassles in her life, which is far more complicated than most of ours. I sensed a crisis after ‘Paradise,’ with the public feud with Lorde, falling out with BJON, the SNL disaster two weeks running, and then the eventual birth of UV, which was radically different from BTD/P.

I think she’s going through a similar upset and re-evaluation of her life now, and where her career fits into it. We don’t know what the hell is going on, but it’s very likely that something is.

Maybe like so many other artists, from Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell to Kate Bush, Fiona Apple and Marina, she’s just tired of being a celebrity and wants to reclaim her privacy; and she may be additionally conflicted about THAT.

Maybe she’s just found herself in a huge muddle that only time and rest and relaxation will fix. Maybe she feels like she simply cannot make a decision about anything.

Tbh she does seem like she’s getting sick of being a celebrity and just wants a balance of creating art and living her regular life. And I think fans harassing her constantly is probably making her want to quit it all even more. It sucks though since writing and performing is her passion so she’s forced to deal with this crap to fulfill her passion. That’s why Joni Mitchell “quit” after almost every album but kept coming back. It’s hard to choose between your life and your art.

This was so hard because I hate having to put BTD and AKA so low since they’re very lovely albums, but all her albums are amazing and some have to go at the bottom. Although my ranking probably changes slightly (sometimes drastically) from day to day. Also I have a feeling NFR will rank up in the top 3 with UV and HM, but I won’t know til it’s out.

I don't feel "owed" anything, but I also think what she's doing is unprofessional af. That's her prerogative, but fans of her music are, understandably, going to get annoyed.

 

She said the album would be out "top of the year", it's the end of May, and there is still no news. Throw in the false Google release date, and it's not surprising that people are impatient and confused. Many months have passed without a single comment about it from her, her managers, or her label. Meanwhile, she's posting about everything else, including other people's albums. Given that, a lot of people are going, "why can't she say something? Anything?"

 

It has nothing to do with being a friend or a stranger. WTF? I don't understand what that has to do with anything.

Okay you think she’s unprofessional and don’t like the way she’s handled it? Well you’re not her boss, so luckily it doesn’t have to bother you. Her album will come out when it comes out and she’ll release news when she chooses to. As much as it sucks for us, we truly aren’t entitled to anything. Either wait or don’t. She doesn’t care.

And she doesn’t owe us anything. Lots of artist take way longer. Even Kate Bush who released very frequently early on like Lana started taking much longer a lot sooner, so we’re actually lucky. Plus look at all the unreleased stuff we have. Even Stevie Nicks (known for lots of unreleased stuff) doesn’t have that much. I can’t believe how lucky we are yet somehow we’re still complaining. She deserves a little time for herself and she doesn’t owe any of us an explanation. We’re not her friends. We’re strangers.

Hejira was like one of the best jazz/pop records of the decade. And having collaborated with Charles Mingus afterward (who asked to collaborate with her, I think) has gotta be a highlight in an artistic career (in terms of ego-stroking), even though she often spoke of that album as derailing her career (see also Dog Eat Dog). Lana can beat Joni on prolificness, if she keeps going the way she is, but not diversity; it remains to be seen if Lana can match her on anti-pop musical ambition (Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, Hissing of Summer Lawns). Hope she tries.

 

BTW, I suspect this is Joni on Lana's instagram (i.e., we know Joni's had a lot of illnesses and aged hard), but I was never sure and as nobody else I know of has mentioned it,  I'm really unsure. But it still looks like it might be her, so nows the time to ask, anybody know? If so, anybody know the older guy?

Yes, that’s Joni! The man is David Hockney, he’s an artist. Funny things is when she posted that I was on this weird week of “Lana is literally modern Joni” and then that was like my confirmation from the universe haha. But I truly think lana’s career is gonna unfold similarly to joni’s. Maybe I’m delusional but I’m convinced nfr will be her Summer Lawns moment where everything changes and lots of people get alienated but the music becomes a whole other level and if that comes true, I’m so excited for her future albums. I could spend hours piecing together how similar Lana’s musical growth has been to Joni’s at the same place in her career lol.

I’m listening to this album right now on my stereo. Thought I’d share because it’s a really good album.

Just scrolled through Lana’s insta video comments and they’re filled with tons of comments from fans about deleting comments from yesterday. They’re there now. It was definitely a glitch. But maybe she got enough of those comments to give her some ideas.

Anyone who likes the visuals of Lana’s old homemade videos and want a taste of Joni Mitchell live, her Shadows & Light concert film is really good. It’s even all on YouTube. It cuts between Joni playing live and archive footage and idk I think it would really resonate with fans of Lana’s old homemade music videos. Then why are you waiting around for it? You have Lana albums you like already that you don’t have to wait for. You can still listen to them. That’s the beauty of music. Why bother waiting for something you already decided you won’t like? Wouldn’t you be happier forgetting about it if it’s not your thing?

I commented twice earlier, neither about NFR. Both were praising the song. One was deleted instantly, one stayed til I refreshed a few minutes later. Then my friend commented something nice and same thing happened. I had to see if it was legit. It’s clearly not related to NFR. Maybe she’s just deleting them because everyone’s annoying the crap out of her. Who cares. It’s her instagram, she can delete everything if she wants. Sometimes I’m just in a bad mood and delete every comment I get even though they’re nice just because I’m like “seriously frig off I’m in a bad mood” but they don’t know that. I thought about this, like it took too long to finish last fall so she decided to wait a year. I hope the next single is Happiness is a Butterfly if it’s something already teased. I’d prefer something completely fresh. I’d want How to Disappear even more but I doubt we’re hearing the studio version til the album comes out. It just makes more sense that way. But who knows. I think HIAB though would be a good summer song lead single if the album drops in the fall.

Someone on twitter said she was doing it to all comments today and right away, so maybe it’s not personal. Idk. I wouldn’t blame her if it was personal though. Must be annoying for her, regardless of how it feels for us. Maybe we should just stop bugging her? It won’t make nfr come faster.

I think it would be really cool if she announced NFR’s release date just before it comes out, and kept the album cover and track list and everything a secret til it came out. Let us pick up the album and see the cover for the first time and turn it over and read the track list for the first time. It’d be even cooler if the teases songs all had new titles too so we don’t know which it’ll be til it plays. Idk I love that kind of mystery. It seems like artists are too pressured to release album covers and track listings way in advance and it totally ruins the moment of awe. Also I hope Venice Bitch closes the first side/disc because that would be beautiful. But yeah I’d love a whole “the albums out in two weeks, you’ll see the cover and track listing then” type thing.

I love Sweet Sucker Dance! The album that’s on (Mingus) is criminally underrated. And the other one is probably Blue Motel Room. It’s my favourite song on Hejira. And good, never give back Blue. Now you technically have a good start to your own Joni collection by having that haha.
