  1. Been listening to a lot of Froot lately. It's the only one of her albums that still holds up for me, as I think I burned myself out permanently on the first two. It's just peak Marina.

The new album is only half good to me, but the songs I do listen to are great:

The title track is fun and feels very "old Marina." Could have had a cool music video.

VFT should have been the lead single.

Pandora's Box had to grow on me but I think it's one of her best now, which I see is not a widely shared opinion. I can't relate to the subject matter of the breakup songs but they get me in my feelings anyway!

I already made a post about ILYBILMM but it's one of my favorite Marina songs ever. I want more guitar-driven Marina tracks.

Flowers is pretty but on the long side.

  2. I have complicated feelings about the album as a whole--but I'm obsessed with ILYBILMM! The wailing guitar is mesmerizing. I wish she would have released it as a single instead of either of the 1st two. I feel like I don't see much hype for it and it deserves way more.

Cola is too iconic of a song to retire from her live performances, it would so punk rock of her to bring it back. she can romanticize whatever/whoever the fuck she wants even Harvey Weinstein

Fuck yes. I hadn't listened to "Cola" in forever but I did today and goddamn, what a serve. She would never write provocative lyrics like that these days. I hope she stops self-censoring. People are going to hate no matter what she does.

  4. Definitely my favorite single this era, seeing as I hated the other ones! This really should have been the first one, imo. It felt like it went by in a blink of an eye, though.

I actually love the millionairess line. She's right--she truly did it her own way and she should be proud of that.

  5. I'm frustrated because I am liking the sound of this album but I'm sick of being preached at by Marina. Lemme get to the non-political songs...

    Spoiler

ILYBILMM was pretty damn great. Thank God.

VFT is a good choice for a single. Hypocritical capitalist queen!! :diva:

  6. Anyone else almost start singing "He's got the fiiiiire" from "Sad Girl" after the the "& I thought I found it in Brentwood/It seemed only appropriate you’d easily have my back" verse?

Do y'all find Blue Banisters to be happy or sad in message?

Obviously, the story she's telling is that the man she was hoping would fix the hole in her heart didn't, but now her friends and family are fixing it instead. Seems positive. But the way it's written, to me, it seems like she thinks she's unlovable and unable to find the true man for her, so she has to just be happy with her friends and family instead.

    Thoughts?

I would describe it as bittersweet, which is why I love it so much. Yes, she has her loved ones there to support her. But she mentions that her ex wanted to give her children to take away her pain and obviously they can't do that for her. There's still that longing there.

  8. This one is my favorite of the three. It's so personal and bittersweet that it breaks my heart. I find it interesting that in the end it's not her new man that's painting her banisters, but her "sisters."

I don't think Lana's wrong for including it, and I understand why she did it, so I'm not throwing shade, but the BLM line in Text Book makes me cringe because it feels so awkwardly shoehorned in. It's a shame because I really like the song otherwise. Drag me etc, but I'm just being honest.

Yeah. This is what I'm feeling. She mentioned this album would respond to critics who were painting her as conservative so it feels like she put that in there to prove something, which kinda ruins the song for me.

But perhaps the BLM rallies were what ultimately came between her and Sean? There he was, with "shining stars" (makes me think of being patriotic) and "standing blue" (blue lives matter) and at the rally he really saw where she stood and that drove a wedge between them?

  10. BB is pretty and I like the lyrics a lot. Textbook is a no go for me. Boring with weird lyrics. WW is obviously the most interesting of the 3 both lyrically and sonically so it's my favorite, but I wasn't blown away. Just generally kind of...whelmed. Tired of the stripped back sound like 10000%. I am loving the honesty of the lyrics but I wish the musical backdrop was more elaborate.

They were freestyles and it shows.

From what I can tell, Lana has become too proud of improvising and then settling for whatever comes out. From her older demos we've seen just how many versions upon versions there are of songs, yet it feels like she can't be bothered to perfect them anymore. I don't get this obsession with a stripped back sound, as if that makes it more authentic. No, after awhile, it makes the songs BORING. I've always loved her because of her versatility but it feels like she doesn't want to change things up anymore.

Tori is very talented but her scope of themes is too limited for my taste. Tori is always angry, always victim-mongering...

This is really not true, though yes, I'll give you that it was a dominant theme in her early works. Have you listened to all of her albums? I don't see To Venus and Back this way, or Scarlet's Walk. (Nor the albums after those, but I don't care for them as much.)

I think the Tori talk is interesting here. I see parallels between Tori and Lana for sure and they are two of my favorite artists of all time.

  13. Haven't heard the song yet but ugh, another song with "woke" lyrics and major cringe. I guess I would have enjoyed this during my man-hating radical feminist phase, but now I'm just kinda over this stuff. I'm glad she's not being bland and uninspired with her writing, so I give her credit for that at least. It's funny though that some people think she's being so subversive and edgy when literally everything she said is the dominant (and only acceptable) opinion right now.

Edit: listened the the song and man...that wasn't good either. It's another miss for me. Loving the visuals from this era but prepared to be majorly disappointed by this album. :crai:
