I'm neutral on the Rita Ora feature. There are worse people such as Iggy, Pitbull, Flo Rida, 2 Chainz, and Jason Derulo's Auto-Tuned whining. I'm just glad that she picked a much better song than Break the Rules. I hadn't heard that, but I'll be keeping an eye out now.

I don't think Die Tonight is that bad, but don't understand the hate for Caught in the Middle. London Queen and Break the Rules are two of the worst songs of all time.

I don't check the forum for two days and miss all of the good stuff.

She's had hits other than "Fancy" and "Black Widow?" Charli XCX is half Indian by way of Uganda. I don't know if Iggy knew that.

Urban has been used as a catch-all term for contemporary music made by African Americans and people from the Caribbean: hip hop/rap, r&b, soul, reggae/dancehall, and reggaeton. The Grammys used to have an urban/alternative category that didn't really make any sense. Mostly neo-soul artists were nominated in that category when they would have fit perfectly fine in the R&B category (and more so than the pop acts that were put there just because they're black), but some difficult to classify acts were also put in there. Kelis' "Milkshake" was nominated in the urban/alternative category. I wouldn't categorize "Milkshake" as hip hop or R&B, but it's definitely influenced by those genres. Therefore, I would call it urban. This is what Wikipedia has to say. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_contemporary

She said that her next album will be more urban than anything she's done before. There is probably going to be a mix of urban and J-pop, but it's not as if electronic music can't be urban (glitch hop, dubstep, trip hop, deep house, etc). The music the Neptunes produced was spacy and electronic. Trap music is electronic and futuristic. Some of the J-pop artists sing R&B and urban pop. http://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/charli-xcx-up-all-night-with-2014s-breakout-pop-star-20141212?page=3

Exactly. Unless she changes her mind, her next album will be even more urban. Charli wanted to be a rapper, and it shows with all of the semi-rapping she did on True Romance.

Those were the only two songs I purchased from the album. A few other songs on Sucker are decent, but not worth purchasing. A few are downright terrible. If you take a close look at my list, you'll see that almost all of the songs have an r&b or hip hop influence. Take My Hand is the only one that is really out of place. I'm waiting to hear Charli chant "Drop that kitty down low" on Ty Dollar $ign's record.

Racism is the belief that a certain race(s) is superior to others. Institutionalized racism is racism that is ingrained in a culture and formally sanctioned by society and/or the government. Prejudice is the harboring of negative attitudes toward a person just because he/she belongs to a certain group. One is making a prejudgment of the person based on the negative stereotypes one believes about the groups that person belongs to. Discrimination is prejudice in action. Everyone is capable of all of these things. In the U.S., minorities are not in a position of power to carry out institutionalized racism, but there are minority groups in other countries who do have or had that power e.g. South Africa during Apartheid. Prejudice is an ecompassing term that can include racist beliefs and negative attitudes towards people for belonging to a certain nationality, gender, religion, region, ethnic group of the same race or different race, etc. Racism is specific to race. There is plenty of room for her to be "whiter." She has dark, thick, curly hair and brown eyes. She also has some Indian features that are apparent to the trained eye. T.I.'s wife Tiny, for example, is supposed to be the coveted light-skinned black woman. She's even half white, but she went to Africa for a risky procedure to permanently change her eye color to ice gray and has bleached her hair blonde. Charli might be pale, but she grew up wishing that she looked more like the fully white girls around her. White women with blonde hair and blue eyes are presented as the highest standard of beauty. There is room for Charli to change beauty standards.

She's probably too afraid to say anything against Azealia Banks, but she'll say something when other people attack Iggy. LOL. It doesn't sound like she's changed her opinion of Iggy. Her thinking that Iggy is a good artist and a pop icon is still problematic. Even after being made aware of Iggy's racist and homophobic comments, for which she has never apologized, Charli still defended her during the whole Snoop debacle. I understand wanting to defend a friend, but it seems as if she has no problem with Iggy's bigotry and cultural appropriation.

One thing I've noticed that is hard for white people to understand is the amount of colorism that exists among non-white ethnic groups. It is systemic and destructive. The use of harsh chemicals to straighten one's hair is widespread among people of Sub-Saharan African descent. In the Dominican Republic, people are publicly ridiculed if they let their hair get too kinky. I've seen firsthand people of Mexican descent ridiculing each other for their skin tones. Black rappers constantly talk about how they want a red bone or yellow bone (light-skinned black woman) and have even made comments disparaging dark-skinned women. I have an Indian friend who says that colorism is a major issue in India. Skin-bleaching products are becoming increasingly popular in Africa.

I know Charli probably has zero native Ugandan ancestry, but the Pakistanis and Indians who moved to Uganda often refer to themselves as Ugandan Asians. They have been there for over 100 years.

It doesn't take much effort to write better lyrics than she can. I used to ghostwrite for people. Whether or not you think her flow is good is rather subjective, I guess. She doesn't know how to ride the beat, imo. Then, there is the problem of her sounding like a dying lawnmower that just ran over a cat.
-
I want to add that I don't think Charli is ashamed of being half Indian; otherwise, she wouldn't mention it. She could easily hide it. It could be possible that she has taken a great interest in learning more about Uganda and Indian culture in her adulthood. She just comes across as being disinterested. I don't think it's out of line to expect her to empathize with other people of color since she's so quick to defend a terrible, white rapper. It's not as if white people are the most oppressed and defenseless people on this planet and need her help the most.

White people in western society are surrounded by white culture everywhere they go. They don't have to make an effort to do anything. It's not fair, but POC have to put in a little more effort in the U.S., Canada, and Europe to learn about themselves because their histories aren't thoroughly covered in schools. Everyone should know where he/she comes from; it is important to know the past in order to understand the present. I don't believe people have to "act" their ethnicity. When you ignore a certain part of you in favor of passing for something you think is superior, then that amounts to self-hate.

I forgot to mention that Charli deleted my tweets one-by-one during that whole Snoop thing. I don't agree with Snoop threatening a woman who hasn't done anything to him personally, but I responded to Charli's tweets on celebrities bullying each other. I asked her how come she's willing to stand up for a superstar, but can't stand up for the small people who have been bullied by Iggy referring to her offensive tweets. I also told her to tell Iggy to stop being a one-person minstrel show. One after another, my tweets were removed, but a tweet that said that whites are the most discriminated against stayed up.

Iggy doesn't sing because she can't. She already tried being the next Britney Spears and failed, so she gets other people to sing for her. It's my opinion that "Fancy" was a success because of the hook Charli wrote and sung. "Black Widow" was a song Katy Perry wrote and gave away. Missy Elliott was an innovative rapper with crossover pop appeal. She would have features, but was also capable of singing her own hooks. SHE is a pop icon and a true, creative artist who was able to think outside the box. Iggy follows a simple formula of rapping elementary school lyrics and having some little-known pop singer sing her hooks since nothing else worked for her. This is the one major problem I had with Charli. Whenever she's asked about her Indian heritage in interviews, she doesn't have much to say. I guess it's not really her fault if her mother didn't talk about it much, but it seems as if Charli grew up thinking of herself as just being white. She mentioned last year that she wanted to learn more about the Gujarati culture and incorporate the sounds of Indian music into her own, but I'm not sure if that's ever going to happen. Since then, she has done punk and straight pop and is planning to do urban and J-Pop influenced stuff in the future. Charli has said before that she wish she had blonde, straight hair when she was younger. I understand that it's difficult growing up in a western society that values European beauty above others. I'm glad that she has sort of embraced her hair, but I'm disappointed that this doesn't cause her to empathize with other people of color especially considering that she witnessed her mother being called a racial slur. Iggy also made tweets offending blacks, Mexicans, Asians, Native Americans, and gays and lesbians. These tweets were made a few years ago, but she was in her 20s so she can't use the dumb teenager excuse. The biggest problem is that she has never apologized or shown remorse for them. She even offended some Aboriginal people by saying that they tear down their government houses because they prefer to sleep under the stars. I'm not going to pretend to know a lot about their culture, but I would expect Iggy to know a little bit about the indigenous peoples of her country. According to one person who responded to Iggy's comments, the Aboriginal people have long lived in huts and didn't just sleep under the stars. Their government houses are falling apart simply because they are in poor shape. As a southerner of African American descent, I find Iggy's fake accent offensive. I don't even think her butt is real because it was flat just a few years ago. Iggy is a reminder of how white people would dress up in blackface long ago and would act out all of the offensive stereotypes of African Americans. Iggy's fake rapping accent is horrendous. Instead of being a half Ugandan Asian, half Scottish person who grew up in the UK trying to tell people why they shouldn't be offended by Iggy, Charli should be trying to understand why people are offended. Charli obviously has a very shallow understanding of hip hop and African American culture. She should either educate herself or stop pretending she knows better than the people who grew up in and started hip hop culture. For the feminist Charli, Iggy has engaged in slut-shaming and has said that women either have fashion tits or porno tits. There is no in between. Well, I guess Charli has porno tits.

A lot of people don't get it, sadly. The problem isn't that Iggy is a white rapper; the problem is that she's pretending to be something she's not (modern day blackface) and is successful because of her white privilege. She is untalented, homophobic, and racist. I don't agree with everything Azealia Banks says, but she's right when it comes to Iggy. She's also right when it comes to T.I. Can you believe that T.I. said that racism is not a thing in Australia?

Y'all aren't going to like my review of Sucker. I'm not really a fan of pop music unless it's indie or urban. I'll rate the songs on a scale of 1-10. Sucker - 4 Break the Rules - 2 London Queen - 1 Breaking Up - 2.5 Gold Coins - 4.5 Boom Clap - 5 Doing It - 9 Body of My Own - 6.5 Famous - 7 Hanging Around - 3 Die Tonight - 5.5 Caught in the Middle - 9 Need Ur Luv - 7.5 By averaging up the scores, I give the album a 5. It's just very average and uninspired. In the end, I only purchased Doing It and Caught in the Middle. They both have the 80s r&b groove I like. My overall complaint about Sucker is that a lot of the songs (even the songs I like) really remind me of songs I've heard before, but I can't pinpoint the songs. I can only pinpoint the general sound, which is mostly 80s pop/New Wave/r&b. This tells me that the songs are generic and sound like a little bit of everything I've heard from the 80s. My dog likes Need Ur Luv. Someone can gift it to her for Christmas.
