  1. Not people comparing Not All Who Wander Are Lost—which is a literary/Tolkien reference and a callback to a poem and pretty famous phrase— with "When the World Was At War Before, We Just Kept Dancing" That one rlly just went right over everybody's heads huh
  2. I really do apologize if you ever felt like I was disrespecting your opinion! It's just that I saw you make some claims about VB and its lyrics, but you didn't post anything to back it up besides the ice cream lyric (which I actually think is clever, and I explained why I think so). Everyone's taste is totally different and that's okay! I guess I'd just be careful criticizing such a beloved song without explaining why or articulating what you dislike
  3. Yes, she sings "soft ice cream" in Salvatore too, but it's differently stylized— in VB, she's using the image of soft ice cream to tie herself to the piers in CA where it's commonly served. She follows it with "ice queen" to further the metaphor— she's got a cold shoulder but she's sweet. In Salvatore, the ice cream metaphor is much more focused on the idea of consumption, hence why it's used as a more seductive lyric. Here, it's more like she "is" ice cream to her lover— something messy but luxurious to eat, and usually devoured in the heat of summer. It fits the song in a different way imo So in other words, I deadass think it's a good line in Salvatore too but for entirely different reasons
  4. Also like,,,, Lana has written far worse lines (we're talking about a woman who rhymes baby with crazy like every other track). "Ice cream, ice queen; I dream in jeans and leather" is at least fun wordplay and it's a memorably specific way to describe herself. So it's a weird line to try and come for in the first place
  5. There's so much depth to VB (even its lyrics). Maybe you just haven't thought about it enough yet, or listened for the meaning past the words. I personally really enjoyed her more understated lyricism in NFR— it feels much more personal and much less melodramatic (she's not pulling any The Blackest Day-type "It's not one of those phases I'm going through" verses where she amplifies her situation poetically). It's not self-referential like a lot of her other work. VB is a special song, and all the lyrics (even banal ice cream lyrics) contribute to making it the fantastic track that it is.
  6. Venice Bitch is one of her best songs lyrically too. I s2g some people just assume the song is boring if she's not talking about snorting cocaine or domestic abuse. She gets just as much across in a lyric like "You're in the yard, I light the fire / And as the summer fades away / Nothing gold can stay" as she does in any highly dramatized song. It's just a different narrative style. The emotional impact is always there, unless you're one of those fans who just skims the surface for her classic sugar-daddy sad-girl type shit.

oh GOD why did she zoom in on mike pence like that on her story
  9. I really do expect UV-tier lyrics but I mean that in the "woah, wtf did she just say" kind of way rather than hoping she'll try to emulate UV/BtD's vibe. Like I don't think she's going to be writing all those "bad girl/other woman/femme fatale" lines— I feel like she's moved past that a little bit as an artist (whether you like it or not). I'm hoping COCC is surprising lyrically but in more of a weird/campy way if that makes sense. And the title definitely gives that kinda vibe!
  10. OMG this is purely fanfic bc it could never happen....but imagine if Lana won AOTY over Adele

I'm lit-rally writing in response to Lana's post. Don't try to argue about semantics because your point is weak. lmao

Truth. I'm not trying to drag Beyonce in the slightest. She's a f*cking visionary (who faces very different issues than Lana. That's my point.) Why don't you read LANA'S post. She only ever was speaking about music critics/journalists and other alternative singers. She made it pretty clear— as long as u can read past the first paragraph, that is.

....Neither of these articles are music criticism articles...they're literally unrelated to the content of Beyonce's music/her lyricism....& another reference to a far-right politician. Girl.....sleep well lmao

I've yet to see any music criticism directed at Beyonce that matches the level of misogyny present in articles about Lana (especially from 2012-2015). I'm not trying to discredit the shit she's taken because of race. I'm well aware the issues are intersectional. You posted a few articles, and... I've still yet to see any music criticism directed at Beyonce that matches the level of misogyny present in articles about Lana. The Nicki Minaj thing I quoted alone is worse than anything I've seen directed at Beyonce for her gender. Come with better receipts girl.

I literally said myself Lana will never have to endure struggles about race. I also said that was a huge privilege. But to say that Beyonce— the music critics' darling of the 2010s— faces as much criticism rooted in misogyny is simply untrue. Lana sang about her real life experiences with domestic abuse and was basically told she was setting the feminist movement back to the 60s. That being said, Beyonce experiences other biased criticism, and vicious racism that Lana has never and will never have to deal with. Also as far as the twerking thing— of course that's rooted in misogyny. But twerking is literally celebrated nowadays; Beyonce and Megan are about to go #1 for a song chock full of sexual innuendo and empowerment, and multiple lines about twerking And the quality/reputability of the source absolutely has something to do with it. Think about how many more people click an article from a trusted source. These are outlets that are supposedly well-respected in the music community; of course their words carry more weight than Bill O'Reilly's.

Posting an article about a Bill O'reilly quote doesn't really say anything lmao. Lana spoke about MUSIC criticism. Of course an extreme-right-wing political FoxNews wacko would hate Beyonce. There were literally articles from highly reputable music websites saying that Lana should "kill herself already."But go off I don't really think it's comparable to a squabble about twerking. https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2012/01/lana-del-reys-regressive-beautiful-twisted-fantasy/252252/ https://www.theguardian.com/music/2012/jan/21/lana-del-rey-pop https://slate.com/culture/2012/01/lana-del-reys-born-to-die-reviewed.html Unlike your references, there are a few reputable news sources. And those are just two I pulled from a one-minute google search. It only gets worse from there. Her entire persona was ruthlessly attacked. Here's a quote from the third DIRECTLY COMPARING her to Nicki in a particularly disgusting way:
  17. just wanna say that i haven't been on these boards since just after the NFR release and SO many memories just came flooding back bc u posted this.....WHEW this is basically a holy text.....

But the truth of it is that Beyonce doesn't face nearly as much criticism rooted in misogyny. At least not over the past decade. Race is another issue (and I remember all of the unfair shit Bey took online for speaking up about police brutality, or how people try to discredit Cardi as being both black and Latina) but you'd be hard-pressed to find articles about Beyonce that come CLOSE to the level of sexism present in pieces about Lana from 2011-2015. Lana will never be persecuted for her race— and that's a huge privilege— but she takes way more sexist shit for her self-expression than Beyonce or Camila or Doja. jmo. Again, it all stems back to how critics deem some female artist's work as "empowering" and others' as "regressive"
  19. Queen Anne's Lace (the flower she mentions in the poem) and sky blue + cream (think fine china ) would be really nice

She never said they were exempt??? Lana just gets attacked for a different thing entirely. All she's saying is that so-called sex-positive/feminist writers criticize her for sharing her experience just because it's not necessarily deemed "empowering."

To me, her point is pretty clear: when female artists sing about their sexuality in a way that's deemed positive or empowering, critics love it. But the moment Lana tries to weave a narrative where she makes mistakes sexually/romantically, and surrenders power to a man (who perhaps doesn't treat her well), she's crucified for it. She wants everyone to be able to sing about their experiences without being told they're "glamorizing abuse." That's all she's saying. It's not an artist's job to be an example.

If people attack her over the FKA twigs thing, they're only proving her point imo. It was such a concise way to sum up the situation (peep Cat Power's comment on the post about it too Now I want a Cat Power feature and no others lmao )
